Tamba Hali helped off after ankle injury

The Chiefs found a rare big play in the passing game on offense, but they lost on e of the players they count on to provide them on defense on the next drive.

Linebacker Tamba Hali appeared to hurt his right ankle, foot or leg while trying to get after Chargers running back Ryan Matthews on a running play and stayed down on one knee after the play came to an end. Medical personnel helped him off the field slowly and Hali eventually wound up on a cart to head to the locker room.

Hali’s injury came on the heels of a 32-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Donnie Avery on a double move that got Avery wide open behind the Chargers defense. It’s the kind of thing that we haven’t seen much of from the Chiefs offense this season and something that should be available against the San Diego defense as long as the Chiefs give Smith time to throw the ball.

The score made it 7-3 Chiefs and that’s where things stand with a little more than 13 minutes left in the second quarter.

UPDATE 1:58 p.m. ET: Hali is questionable to return with an ankle injury.
