Week 12 power rankings

AP

1. Seahawks (10-1; last week No. 1):  Now that Percy Harvin is back, maybe he can play cornerback.

2. Saints (9-2; No. 4):  Forget the playoffs.  The NFC’s berth in the Super Bowl hinges on whether the Saints can win next Monday night in Seattle.

3. Panthers (8-3; No. 5):  Ryan Kalil may have been only one year too early with that ad he bought before last season.

4. Patriots (8-3; No. 6):  Wes Welker is so much better than Danny Amendola that, even when playing for a different team, Welker did more to help the Pats win on Sunday night.

5. Broncos (9-2; No. 2):  Maybe Jim Irsay was right.

6. Chiefs (9-2; No. 3):  The paperwork may say Clark Hunt, but the Chargers own the Chiefs.

7. Bengals (7-4; No. 8):  The team that has gone 23 years since its last playoff win may soon have a new streak that lasts only a week.

8. 49ers (7-4; No. 9):  Aldon Smith returned a few weeks ago, but he’s finally back.

9. Cardinals (7-4; No. 10):  It’s quite possible that the Steelers “retired” a two-time coach of the year.

10. Cowboys (6-5; No. 15):  Believe it or not, the Cowboys could be on track to winning the division.

11. Eagles (6-5; No. 12):  Believe it or not, the Eagles may make the playoffs without winning the division.

12. Packers (5-5-1; No. 14):  At least Ted Thompson won’t be wasting time next month coming up with a New Year’s resolution.

13. Colts (7-4; No. 7):  Jim Irsay will eventually blow his stack.

14. Lions (6-5; No. 11):  Bill Ford will eventually will blow his stack.

15. Chargers (5-6; No. 19):  Philip Rivers seems to play better after he blows his stack.

16. Rams (5-6; No. 23):  Sam Bradford should have done that new deal when the team wanted to.

17. Bears (6-5; No. 13):  Unless Jay Cutler can tackle running backs, it won’t matter when he returns.

18. Titans (5-6; No. 20):  Somewhere, Bud Adams is giving Al Davis a middle finger, or two.

19. Steelers (5-6; No. 21):  The playoffs start Thursday night in Baltimore.

20. Ravens (5-6; No. 25):  I said, “The playoffs start Thursday night in Baltimore.”

21. Jets (5-6; No. 16):  The playoffs ended Sunday in Baltimore.

22. Dolphins (5-6; No. 17):  After Sunday’s woulda-shoulda-coulda catch in the final minute, Mike Wallace probably won’t be complaining about a perceived lack of deep balls for the rest of the season.

23. Giants (4-7; No. 18):  Maybe Tom Coughlin should have talked to his players about not talking too much.

24. Bills (4-7; No. 24):  I wonder if any of the Bills players made a bye-week trip to Dave & Buster’s?

25. Browns (4-7; No. 22):  Every time Browns fans think Brandon Weeden is out, injuries pull him back in.

26. Buccaneers (3-8; No. 28):  The most stunning in-season turnaround in years continues.

27. Raiders (4-7; No. 26):  Terrelle Pryor guaranteed earlier in the season that the Raiders would eventually get a fourth win.  No one is guaranteeing a fifth.

28. Vikings (2-8-1; No. 31):  Cordarelle Patterson became the first Vikings player since Randy Moss to put his butt on the goal post at Lambeau Field, but under slightly different circumstances.

29. Redskins (3-8; No. 27):  Thanks to the RGIII trade, the Redskins are helping the Rams get a very high draft pick in 2014.

30. Jaguars (2-9; No. 32):  Yep, they’re screwing up their shot at the first pick in the draft.

31. Falcons (2-9; No. 29):  Has any quarterback ever accomplished less with more money?

32. Texans (2-9; No. 30):  Case Keenum is one of the best young quarterbacks in league history to never win a game.

  1. I hope everyone enjoyed the Steelers’ brief moment of struggles because it is over. Every year it is the same story: Steeler start slow and finish strong. This year it is no different.

Remember after starting 0-4 we said the Steelers will go on a 10-2 streak? Well now we stand at 5-6 with that streak still alive, and we’re in the race for the division.

Why are you jealous? Is it the trophy case? Is it the historic moments? The confetti bathing? What? What did we do to you other than have unequaled success since the beginning of the Super Bowl era?

Ladies and gentlemen, we are on the march. No one wants to see us along this march. And the final march will be the parade through Pittsburgh.

    Aaaand we march.

  2. If you go with the assumption that the Panthers and Saints split their two games, the Panthers migt be 12-4 and stuck with a wild card spot. And either the 49ers or Cardinals is probably going to be 11-5 and stuck with a wild card spot. The blessing? Both wild card teams will have easy wins over the North and East division winners, who will assume that because they are at home, they automatically win. But they will get beaten up by superior wild card teams. Ice up, son!!!!!!!!

  3. As a Huge Panther fan, yes I am a believer that we are a force to be reckoned with. And I understand that we beat the Pats and the Pats beat Denver but realistically, it’s pretty weird to see them at the three spot. In my opinion we are a 4 or 5 but I know I’m just splitting hairs there. If we split with New Orleans and win the rest of our games, then I believe the three spot will be more realistic. I love the faith in us though Florio!

  4. Admiral Agenda,

Care to expound your logic how ANY team from the NFC East wins a wild card berth?

Of course not. Page views attained. Mission accomplished.

  5. Wow, the Panthers are # 3 and should have lost to the Dolphins. Had Miami played a QB like their back up Matt Moore the Dolphins would have won. Instead they continue to stay with Tannehill, a QB who the organization has mistaken for a ‘franchise’ quarterback. T-hill can not throw deep and Wallace turned several times to find the ball PFT referred to. PFT Wallace caught two other long passes that were poorly thrown by T-hill. Wallace has a right to complain as his QB can not throw deep at all. Check it out and write about it…..

  6. The Rams are gonna draft a bust anyways. If I were Bruce Allen, I’d do the trade for RGIII a million more times. There’s only ONE RGIII and his skillset and IQ is the best since Elway period. You’ll see, You’ll ALL see when RGIII and the Redskins win AT LEAST 3 Superbowls before he goes into the Hall of Fame in Canton. #ThankGODImaRedskinFan

  7. The Saints have more to worry about than Monday night. 2 meetings with the Panthers comes to mind.

  8. I’m confused why the Packers are the highest NFC North team in the Power Rankings. Unless Rodgers is back starting Thanksgiving, I don’t see them making the playoffs, let alone winning their division.

  9. “Case Keenum is one of the best young quarterbacks in league history to never win a game.”
    ==================================
Aikman went 1-15 his rookie year. :o)

  10. 5. Broncos (9-2; No. 2): Maybe Jim Irsay was right.
    13. Colts (7-4; No. 7): Jim Irsay will eventually blow his stack.
    ——–

Maybe Irsay shouldve been paying more attention to his own team. Getting blown out two weeks in a row.

  11. #6… As a Chiefs fan I laughed to keep from crying, because its absolutely true. Our Defense has imploded (they played like the 2003 Chiefs D Sunday), Peytons gonna give KC a rough time.

But as their offensive output wanes as the weather gets colder (and Chiefs impressive offensive display against SD in a surprisingly watchable game Sunday), I think there’s more than a fighting chance for both teams on the Sunday National late game.

  12. Damn I hate the Lions. Probably the best underdog story of the decade, yet fail when given the chance. As bad as the NFC East is, NFC North is just as sad. No defense anywhere and sputtering offense.

  13. 5. Broncos (9-2; No. 2): Maybe Jim Irsay was right.
    13. Colts (7-4; No. 7): Jim Irsay will eventually blow his stack.
    Way to stay consistent PFT…….

  14. Here we go again, with fans getting their panties in a bunch over unimportant rankings that don’t mean a thing anyway.

  15. This is why I love pro football… 3 of the top 5 teams could be beaten out in the playoffs by a number of the teams that are on the border or even some of the bottom 5

  16. After a shaky start by some teams, every NFC West team is now in the top half of the rankings.

Remember the division that sent a 7-9 team to the playoffs three years ago? They are now the best overall division in football.

  17. Even though Ravens and Steelers are only 5-6, the winner on Thursday at M&T will be well-positioned going into December. Given the current AFC standings, this game is as important as it would be if they were both 11-0. This will be rockem sockem smashmouth, just like usual with these two rivals. Oughta be great football if you like old school.

  18. Seattle, when you head to MetLife stadium in February 2014, remember: old man Peyton doesn’t like playing in the snow. Pressure the he** out of him and you’ve got the game. And the trophy.

The cowboys should be higher..we have the best qb in the league. The cowboys will get on a roll all the way to the Super bowl.
    ********
Actually you have the best QB in the league for the fourth quarter.
If he ever shows up for the first three you may have a point.

  20. Packers should not be ranked above Indy or Detroit for that matter. It pains me to say it but they are a nothing team without Rodgers. And with the word out that Rodgers is almost certainly not playing Thursday Green Bays gonna be under 500.

Also Washington is far too high…

  21. Where would the Seahawks be if all their players weren’t juicing? 15? I’m waiting for Pete Carroll to give out hugs and get his head popped off by a return squeeze from one of his roid kings.

  22. I think if the 49ers struggle down the stretch that the Eagles or Cowboys will get that 2nd NFC wild card spot.

  23. Logicalvoice:

Your team could have drafted Russell Wilson in the second round last year, and kept three #1 picks.

    Have a nice day. 🙂

  24. “30. Jaguars (2-9; No. 32): Yep, they’re screwing up their shot at the first pick in the draft.”

    They get blasted for losing.

    They get blasted for winning.

  25. Can we stop pretending the Jets are a top-20 team already? I know you guys don’t like wild jumps, but they’ve looked mid-major these past two weeks. Give it up already

  26. NFC West…not a single team in the bottom half of the rankings, and own 1/3 of the top 9. Impressive.

  27. I’m not sure that I understand the little one liner about the Bengals but it doesn’t surprise me if it’s another tired attempt at saying something nice about them without actually saying something nice about them.

  28. Okay, you’ve got San Fran and Carolina sitting there. And you have the gail to say the Eagles could take a playoff spot from them? Please. They’ll take the division by default, because the Cowboys still suck.

Only 3 Super Bowls? Would proclaiming the Redskins winning the next 12 Super Bowls with RGIII at QB suddenly be crazy and/or unrealistic?

  30. How do you have The Saints (who lots to New England) and Carolina (who minus a bogus call, could have lost to New England) a head of Denver? Carolina barely beat Miami??? New England and Denver should at the very least be above New Orleans in the rankings, but I would also put both of them above Carolina.

  31. I love to watch the cold weather take over every season and separate contenders from pretenders. Dome/warm weather teams better hope you get home field in the playoffs!

  32. THAT TIME OF THE SEASON WHEN giants/redskins FANS GO BACK TO TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST 30 YRS RATHER THAN WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST 30 DAYS

    #SeeYouInSeptember2014

  33. Seattle should have 2 more losses.

    1. Denver has the easiest strength of schedule in the entire NFL.

    2. Most of the NFL LEAST are so terrible, they will be lucky to have a winning record. Somebody will limp into the playoffs and be one and done in wildcard.

    3. Most of the east coast teams suck. Somebody will limp into playoffs and be one and done.

That’s what usually happens when your division is the one of the worst in the league for 5 years in a row. Lots of high draft picks.

  40. Mr. Florio,

“10. Cowboys (6-5; No. 15): Believe it or not, the Cowboys could be on track to winning the division.”

  43. Wins and Points Allowed Per Division:

AFC North: 21 wins allowing 942 pts
AFC South: 16 wins allowing 1,118 pts
AFC East: 22 wins allowing 1,035 pts
AFC West: 27 wins allowing 997 pts

NFC North: 19 wins allowing 1,197 pts
NFC South: 22 wins allowing 914 pts
NFC East: 19 wins allowing 1,157 pts
NFC West: 29 wins allowing 841 pts

What is clear? AFC South is the WORST

Who’s second? Probably NFC North or NFC East

What else is clear? The Redskins allowed 338 pts (ranks 2nd worst in the NFL) and the Vikings allowed 346(worst in the NFL)

    …………………………………………………….

You really think your QB can beat the Seahawks defense? I think they have him pretty well figured out. In addition to the fact that Kaepernick has generally been a disappointment, he is easily rattled by anything resembling a good defense. Good luck with that.

  50. Seattle’s depth at CB has been there, it maybe not be as high a level as Browner/Thurmond but Lane/Maxwell aren’t slouches. Lane played 4 games opposite Sherman and the defense was still ranked # 1 last year to close the season.

The one spot where the team is hurting is nickel CB for 4 games as Thurmond serves for substance abuse.
The offense has started to convert on third downs, the protection (returning LT/C/RT) in there for deep balls and Percy Harvin is a coverage nightmare for defensive coordinators.

  51. Packers have failed to beat a 3 teams in a row the last 3 weeks that had losing records.

2 years in a row the Packers couldn’t sweep a regular season series against a Vikings team all of their fans say they are 100 times better than.

They are way too high and should be below Detroit and Chicago. In fact, they should be 1 above MN. That is how much they suck this year.

  52. Niners have the best D in the league, they are vicious. The O is pitiful. They don’t deserve to be higher than 9th.

It pains me as a die hard Niner fan to say that Kap is playing like a 3rd string QB. A great OL, top TE, top RB, Boldin/manningham at WR….all of that talent—-there is no one to blame for the poor performance except Kap. Niners can win the West still, as Seattle could lose next three games.

  53. Okay, you’ve got San Fran and Carolina sitting there. And you have the gail to say the Eagles could take a playoff spot from them? Please. They’ll take the division by default, because the Cowboys still suck.

    ===================================

You mean that a multi-national gas company says that the Eagles can take a playoff spot from S.F. or Carolina?

I am always amused that people who can not spell, nor care to take the time to check their spelling, insult a guy who makes a living writing about football.

Now I am going to go check my Gail stock and see if it went up due to their support of the Eagles.

  54. The Panthers at 3 is absolutely insane. Nice to see a usually “middling” team play so much better, and Cam is getting really fun to watch, but come on.

    1. Seahawks
    2. Saints
    3. Patriots

  58. Panthers are probably more 5 but the head to head with the Patriots is a problem. Don’t act like that punching the ball in from the 1(if PI)or 13(holding)was a given.

  59. Steelers and Cowboys fans love to live in the past. Is anyone denying the championships those teams have earned? no. Are we discussing the 2013 season here? yup.

Irsay was just saying what I have been thinking all along in the back of my head for years but instead I would just go with the Herd and make excuses for him like ESPN and all his followers do. I can’t do it any longer. It is what it is and the eye test says he comes up small on the biggest stages and so does his fire. I have never been a fan of Brady because of his rivalry with Peyton but watching them and how they fight and get fired up to will their team to victory it’s obvious that Brady has an intangible that Peyton simply does not. Or maybe he just has the Balls while Peyton has the Brain and weak noodle arm.

  63. Ha San Fran beats the redskins and now the fans are coming outta the woodwork on how their D is “the best.” I know, redskins have been such a powerful offense as of late :p (ok I’ll stop being sarcastic)

I feel bad for denver, had the game locked down until their defense went south (Julian Edelman, really? No one covering him?)

Seahawks players were probably smoking pot, not “juicing,” based on the substance abuse violation rather than the performance enhancing drug abuse violations.

All teams in the top 13 could randomly swap places with other teams above or below them – this is football, saying someone is a concrete number in an arbitrary ranking is horse hooey and all you die hard fanboys defending your teams based on one person’s ranking coupled with his humorous and facetious remarks are kind going over the edge of sanity a bit.

I’m liking the good football, but I am absolutely flabbergasted by jags. They’ve won too much and must be stopped!!!! It’s the sack-o for the jags!!!

  64. elcapitanfiscal says: Nov 26, 2013 8:40 AM The cowboys should be higher..we have the best qb in the league. The cowboys will get on a roll all the way to the Super bowl.

    ………………

You’re joking right. Even half of thier own fans think that guy is an overpaid chump.
Best in the league? With that roster theres about 6/7 qbs that would have already taken you there…. Brady, big Ben, Peyton, Rogers.

  65. On a neutral field, Denver crushes New England. In Foxboro with the absolute worst possible conditions, Denver essentially played New England to a tie. So it’s hard to imagine that on a neutral field (or, most likely) in Denver that the Broncos would lose. The reason that is important is because Denver controls its destiny in the AFC and has a fairly easy remaining schedule, which means New England will be traveling to Denver this winter if New England makes it that far.

That’s not to say Denver should be ranked higher in the mighty “power rankings” above because, honestly, who gives a crap about power rankings? Completely meaningless, yet everyone gets so up in arms about them here.

  66. We now have a solid offensive line (which we didn’t up to now). That means that Russell is going to have more time to throw, without running all over the field. That means he will up his production. That means we can now eat big chunks of time off the clock with our “slow” running game. That means that CB’s are not going to be on the field that much. That means, the Seahawks are ready for the stretch run.

    GO HAWKS!!!

  67. Denver isn’t gonna play New England on a neutral field. It’s gonna be either here or there(prob in Denver). Either way, it’s gonna be a big game and it’s gonna be cold, two huge problems for Manning. To say Denver would crush them, after blowing a 24-0 halftime lead gained mostly off NE turnovers, is a little silly, don’tcha think? In the last 2 yrs Denver is 0-4 against the Pats and have given up 41/45/31/34 pts. They can’t stop them.

The more undisciplined the players get, the less consistent their play will be. Team parity is not what we are seeing here, it’s team mediocrity.

NE gave up 24 the first half and then Indy gave it back. So what? Last 2 years mean zilch! Broncos will be favored in Denver, Pats in NE. We’ve seen Brady go down like a little girl in clod weather.

  70. Chiefsfanatic: the 9ers Dfense is 4th in points per game at 16.7, including games against GB, Seattle, Carolina, and NO. If you’ve been watching any of their games and don’t recognize the best defense in the league you need to follow another sport.

  71. Last 2 yrs don’t mean zilch? Same coaches, most of the same players and Denver hasn’t been able to stop NE, period. That’s if Manning even gets that far. He might lose another home field, cold weather playoff game 1rst, just like last yr when Fox made him take a knee at the end of regulation.

  72. Being a Cowboys fan… beating the Giants off a 4 game win streak beating up on back up QB’s… 10 is too high. Defense still couldnt tackle a chicken!

Same players? Are you delusional? For two of the games you’re counting as relevant, Tim Tebow was Denver’s starting QB. I’ll just stop there.

I would like nothing more as a Patriots fan than to see the Stoolers again

  76. @stealthjunk: as it said in my previous post, I was talking about the Denver D not being able to stop NE, that’s why I listed the last 4 pt totals Denver has given up. I said nothing about the QB, although it hasn’t seemed to make that much difference in the w/l column.
