Kyle Shanahan says RG3’s healthy, will learn pocket presence

Clearly, there are things Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III needs to work on.

But according to Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, the notion that Griffin isn’t well enough to be effective doesn’t hold water.

The younger Shanahan dismissed comments by 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks that Griffin shouldn’t be playing because of his physical condition.

We’re talking a 4.31 to maybe a 4.35 [in the 40-yard dash],” Shanahan said, via John Keim of ESPN.com. “I don’t think he all of a sudden turned into a guy who can’t run. He can still make plays and still do both. He has to pick his times. Sometimes he doesn’t have an option and sometimes the pocket breaks down. Sometimes someone’s not open and it’s nice to have a quarterback where the plays not just over when that happens. It happens a lot in games and the quarterback has to throw it away or take a sack. Robert still has an option to do something with it.”

Shanahan acknowledged Griffin “might not be quite as explosive or quite as fast,” coming off reconstuctive knee surgery, but didn’t think it was the thing holding him back.

He also thinks time will help his quarterback develop more of a feel for the pocket, something that he needs as he grows.

“A lot of people who have no mobility have been working on that feel since they were 5 years old,” Shanahan said. “It’s the way you’ve got to play. When you’re as good an athlete as Robert, you’re not forced to do that at a young age so you run around and make plays and you can always do that.

“For guys like that all of a sudden to learn to play in the pocket it’s not who you are.”

Thus, this year’s growing pains might have been predictable for reasons other than Griffin’s health, though that’s a convenient place to begin.

  1. 1st of all Kyle wouldn’t be employed without “Pop” or Pop’s friends. take a young, unqualified Offensive Coordinator and place a Rookie QB in his care and you have what is now going on in Washington. Kyle has to go but Pops can’t fire him so I suppose the “bobsie twins” need to ply their questionable talents elsewhere.

  2. Yes, he does need to learn it.

The question is, who do you think will be the coach that eventually teaches him how?

  3. Ok here’s my take. I’m a big RG3 fan not nearly the obsessive that many people are. I’m a seahawks fan first and foremost. But what I seem to need understand was the most arguments about him being an elite Passer. He’s an elitely gifted athlete. Who makes plays.

But the problem to me about RG3, was that he knew he was physically unable to prepare to play quarterback in his style. So why on earth did he not just take the time he lost being physically unable to particle and Spend that time watching film?

I’m completely confused with the he didn’t get an off season excuse. He had an entire off seasons with NOTHING but time bc of his injury to challenge himself to become a more cerebral QB, what came of that extra time? Absolutely nothing, he’s looked like one of the league worst qbs this season and I’m not willing to play the blame game when hey could have been mentally prepared for this season. Prepared to change his style and confident in his skills bc of his study. What I have seen idea scared, scarred, fragile, sensitive, irrational, poor decision making qb. Who for the most part last season did none of that.

The blame solely goes into RG3 no one else, it’s his job to be mentally prepared and confident to play. It’s the pros everyone is the best of the best, prepare properly and it will give you confidence kind of like when you know you’ve got that math test on wraps and walk in all calm. Same principal here.

I’m just sick of the excuses and blame game. Yeah you only call the plays they give you, but if your not getting in manageable situations and are racking of pointless stats after your down by a lot then your basically playing like a scrub.

Get your act together and redskins fans stop making excuses everyone struggles let’s just hope he comes out of it okay and more tough skin.

  4. Let’s hope next year RG3 has an offensive coordinator and head coach who know what they’re doing.

I think Snyder should give logicalvoice a call and make him an offer to be head coach and offensive coordinator. That would truly be God’s gift to Redskin fans everywhere. #logicalvoiceknowsitall

  5. It doesn’t matter what his straight line speed is. This kid has less mobility and far less escapability than he had last year. That’s just a fact.

  6. But first, RG3 must learn how to play behind the worst offensive line in football.

This would include learning how to stand where there is no pocket.

All, while no one in the coaching staff or media talk able it.

  7. It’s nice to read an article about the Redskins on this site that isn’t filled with personal opinions and attacks. Florio, you should take some notes. It doesn’t have to be about your hatred of the Redskins.

  8. I’m not an RG3 fan because he said he didn’t want to play in Cleveland (I understand, but don’t like what he said), however I feel for him.

Is the experience he’ll gain playing in a losing season worth sacrificing extra recovery time for next year?

From the first game, it was apparent he’s not himself and there is a chance the Shanahan’s are going to destroy him. Kudos to him for being a fighter, and he’s not in a position where he can just say that he would rather work on his recovery than lead this team. The coaches should make that decision for him.

Cousins showed he can play, so getting him some experience should be justifiable for the move as well.

  9. Was Shanahan in church, praying, when he said this?

    Dude’s crazy.

RG3 didn’t “suddenly forget how to run” You left him in too long, and his knee got obliterated. You should say “suddenly never able to run again like he used to due to injury.”

And he’s trying to make Griffin into a pocket passer. Did you never learn to put the square peg in the square hole on your toy as a child? Square peg, round hole. Yet you continue to do it, thinking some day the Square peg will eventually be round.

No wonder the guy can’t win.

  10. Is it possible RGME just isn’t smart enough to play QB in the NFL? He is a great athlete trying to play QB. Think about while at Baylor and probably even in high school he didn’t completely focus on football. He was a world class track star and almost qualified for the Olympics. Instead of focusing on football year round he was focusing on track unlike other great QBs whose only focus was just football.

    Just a thought.

  11. illogical voice III is back in da house……HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!! 1st place baby….

14-2 prediction has turned into cellar of worst division in the league. you predicted SB but only bowl your team will experience is the tidy bow.

  12. Dear America,

I’d like to list the things that the Washington Redskin QB, Robert Griffin the turd, will have to learn. Please remember that the Redskins gave up three first round draft choices and a second round for him.

And none of the things he must learn does their 4th rounder, Kirk Cousins, have to learn.

Griffin’s “on the job training” needs:

    – Pocket presence
    – Reading defenses
    – Not to target lock on first option
    – Throw the ball downfield with accuracy
    – Run a two minute offense
    – Show leadership on the field
    – Show urgency on the field
    – Learn how to slide to avoid getting hit
    – Throw the ball consistently so receivers can catch it
    – Learn from your mistakes
    – Hold onto the football
    – Notice your WIDE open receivers
    – Learn how to audible and to adjust the offense

You’d be hard pressed to find a least prepared and qualified QB that was chosen as a first round draft pick (and then some).

He did have the skills and talent to play running back but he can’t pass block and is not durable.

  13. What K. Shanahan is saying is partially true, but the pocket ”collapses” way too fast, too often, and THAT is the coaches fault: ie:, insufficient coaching, game plan or personnel.

  14. RGIII and Kaepernick are both in this predicament.

Harbaugh has been is doing the same with Kaepernick and it has obviously been a learning curve and very uncomfortable for Kap…..but it’s SLOWLY starting to yield results…..3 passing TD’s on Sunday instead of 3 rushing TD’s.

Griffin needs to start doing the same thing, and it will take time, but he can’t afford to take the hits he’s taking or his career will be over before it starts.

  15. Hey…

  16. Holy Moly, and I thought Tebow dominated the media’s attention. Aside from having a good rookie season and selling foot-longs, what exactly warrants the non-stop attention on this guy? Just a mediocre quarterback from what I’ve seen this year. But I bet next time he passes gas it’ll be breaking news and Obama will declare a national holiday.

  17. Shouldn’t he have been learning to at like a professional QB over the previous season and a half? As RG III tries to rebuild himself as a QB under new coaches next year I’m sure he will have the thoughts of Shanahan and Junior to motivate him. Future first round picks should stay away from some franchises (Washington, Jacksonville, Cleveland) if they want a chance at winning.

Hey genius, they used one 1st to pick him and then traded two 1st’s and a 2nd. That means they used 3 first round picks and a second on him. Go back to school and learn to count. And on the topic of RG, this guy is an amazing athlete but he just isn’t smart enough to read defenses. He will follow the same path as Vick, seasons filled with lots of highs and lows only to fall short to more talented teams.

  19. Robert needs to first get over his own hype. That is his biggest problem. Real leaders don’t have to proclaim it in press conferences. This kid has a chip on his shoulder for no reason, and it’s going to affect him in the wrong ways. He seems uncoachable, and like he is above the game. The injury and return campaign says it all in that regard. Some guys are just too athletic to be a QB, and never get balance it takes. Being fast and atheltic is not the answer at QB. Just look at your superbowl winning QBs in history. None of them had the wing style the athletic QBs do.
Humble yourself Robert, and maybe you will advance at the postition.

  20. to the uneducated bob is a good quarterback on a good team with a good head coach a good owner good wide receivers behind a good offensive line

  21. Ahh… once again the everyone becomes an expert on evaluating NFL talent. If all of you so called experts on here give your opinions on this site, this must mean you are ready to step in and become some kind of NFL scout, or GM. No matter what the media, or idiots on this site say, you can see the talent on the field. Is he not having the season he had last year, the clear answer is no…but was he ever a traditional progression reading QB in his entire football life, that answer is no, which means his development into the “traditional” QB will take a little time, which was missed this year while he had to rehab a knee. Haters can keep saying, oh the skins fans keep making excuses, but this is a fact. Every second year young QB needs time in the offseason to develop his skills, and mature as a professional, neither was the case for this kid. Again, as I have said before, he has made some major media missteps in his young career, but this is something every young man can improve on as they mature, and RG3’s work ethic is unmatched, and his intelligence is above most of the sorry QB’s in this league. As these comments continue, and the articles keep pointing out the negative…it will be fun to watch this kid blossom in the next couple of years, and see all of the haters amongst fans, and media eat their words. HTTR!!

  22. Well it’s not hard to see you’re one of the mathmatically challenged…

Using you’re on 1st round pick is yours it wasn’t given away Einstein it was used to select RGIII, to say it was given up is to say they got nothing, nada not a 1st round pick, there merely swapped positions with St. Louis in 2012 and gave them a 2nd in 2012 and a 1st in 2013 and 2014. In the deal with St. Louis in 2012 they gave up a 2nd round pick in 2013 and 2014 they gave up a 1st and where I come from and how we do math that equals the loss of 2 1st round picks and 1 2nd round pick.

There’s only one Robert Griffin and you are all jealous he’s not leading your team to wins and Superbowls over the course of the next 15 years. Point Blank. #HTTR
    ==================================
No, there’s 3- Robert Griffin, Robert Griffin the 2nd, and Robert Griffin the 3rd- plus a ton of other ones in various local phone books. And there’s a Robert Lloyd Griffin who played for the Rams and Cards in the 50’s and early 60’s. He’s 84 years old and has the same number of championships that RG3 has or will have- Zero.

Also, he has better knees than RG3.

  26. Not only are the Redskins fourth in the NFC East, but RGIII is clearly the fourth best QB in the East also

  27. beerbudsandbevo..
its not December yet..Romo will fall apart at the seams, sucks to make it all the time and fail..oh well keep being a troll on our peoples teams..those who live glass houses, shouldn’t throw interceptions…

  28. Not a Skins fan but I watched him last year and I have trouble believing the incredible deep throws he made last year are all the sudden forgotten. He has never really had to deal with being bad before and its a shame he has tried to throw his teammates and game plans under the bus but he is young and will learn from it. It takes years to master the mental side of quarterbacking and he is in year two. He will get better all be it not this year but I don’t know how they will get more talent around him as that team has been horrible in the free agent market for a decade and they sold there draft for RGIII. Id be more concerned with that then his play this year.

This is truly funny! Last year and during the course of the offseason, this guyg was all about the skins winning the SB this year and the next few ones. Now, he’s backtracking, as expected, and unseemingly changing his declaration, albeit still unprecedented, to “over the course of the next 15 years.”

Hilarious!!! This guy’s always good for some form of laughter!

  30. The redskins have been pretty inactive in FA during Shanahan’s tenure. RGIII works too hard to not eventually and all you big mouths will eat your smug words.

  31. Davekshape… Like I said earlier, your making excuses. Of it was the offensive line then why had Russell Wilson played well and been so officiant and clutch. Despite missing 3-4 starting linemen weekly?

Rw had been pressured and hurried the most in the NFL, and or near the most(weekly changes in stats) and his still been able to make smart decisions and is doing everything people say Rg3 is not.

Again Rg3 has all the talent in the world but at some point talent isn’t enough. He should have been able to take advantage of his free time off the field to be mentally prepared and develop his eyes and recognition of defenses and schemes. But instead it seemed he was too worried about talking and publicity.

  32. RG3′s work ethic is unmatched, and his intelligence is above most of the sorry QB’s in this league. As these comments continue, and

Your commentary really makes sense. Right up until you mentioned griffin’s intelligence. I get it, you’re a die hard skins fan. Probably got a griffin jersey, maybe two. But it just really don’t make any sense that if griffin’s intelligence and football smarts is above most of the sorry QBs in the league today, why is it so that he can’t seem to figure out what works for the offense for which he runs? Why it’s so that he can’t seem to figure defenses and outsmart them? How is it that a less intelligent QB in Seattle don’t seem to have any issues leading his team. Why is it that he keeps letting himself get baited by reporters and give them answers that surely gets a lot of attention? I’m just going with your rationale here.

For your sake, I sure do hope that he figures things out. But you can’t deny, the way he’s going is definitely oddly similar to the path Mike Vick has taken.

  33. Last year a healthy RG3 masked our teams weak offensive line. Ahmed Brooks was right. Anyone can see he does not accelerte even close to what he can do when healthy. Like Garçon said. How can he be 100 percent if he wears a ladder on his leg. I really wish we would our future and put him on IR. We have enough cap space get him a solid o-line. HTTR
