Steelers will indeed lose a late-round pick

Yes, $100,000 will come out of the paycheck of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin for his Thanksgiving sideline side step.  But that’s not the end of the punishment.

While Peter King of TheMMQB.com said during Friday’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN that the Steelers will lose a draft pick only if the Ravens miss the playoffs due to the failure of Jacoby Jones to score a touchdown on the play with which Tomlin interfered, King has since advised PFT that he was incorrect.

A late-round draft pick will indeed be forfeited by the Steelers, regardless of whether the Ravens miss the playoffs.  In the unlikely event that the tiebreaking process for the Ravens goes deep enough to consider net points and the Ravens miss the playoffs because the drive in question ended in a field goal and not a touchdown, the penalty will be enhanced.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports first reported that the Steelers will lose a late-round pick.  As the league has announced, the specific penalty will be determined once the full draft order is finalized, which will happen after the postseason concludes — and after all compensatory picks are distributed.

  1. Yea that first report made no sense. It was highly unlikely that 4 points was going to be a tiebreaker to make the playoffs. That would’ve just been for PR. We could’ve taken the pick away, we should’ve taken a pick away but we didn’t, now be a good boy.

  2. So over the top it’s not even funny. Sure it looked like Tomlin did it on purpose, but can they PROVE it? Nope. I’ve stuck with the NFL during all these stupid rules, fines, and horrible officiating, but the league is really starting to annoy the crap out of me.

By the way, have all these rules to protect the players actually slowed down injuries? Sure doesn’t seem like it, but I’d love to see a study.

  3. So they lose a pick because Tomlin quite possibly took a tad off the scoreboard, and the nfl wants to encourage an even playing field.

I get that and respect it, but how about all the non calls in that game where offensive linemen essentially tackled the defense?

How about the call against the panthers that was picked up and ended the pats game? Or the non call on Nate solder holding Will Allen on the pats comeback dt against the saints?

I’d say these calls effected football games just as much if not more than Tomlin’s two step.

So let them keep their draft picks, I think in the interest of fairness lets have refs call an even game for a change.

  4. The team should have some kind of an impact from a clueless, classless move by it’s head coach.

It’s still a crock that this guy didn’t get a suspension.

  5. Whoa. That’s pretty awesome. So you’re saying that there are consequences for your actions? That sounds like a good place to start and definitely a ‘teaching moment’. I was at a High School playoff game Friday and the Refs gave out a warning about coaches being on the field. These things spread out all the way down.

  6. Late round picks/compensatory picks are crap anyway, doubt it’s a big deal. Sure sometimes you cab find a diamond in the rough, but unless it’s a high pick it’s not too bad w

  7. I still say the most effective punishment is to leave their draft picks intact and force them to keep and play the drafted players.

  8. They should have just suspended Tomlin, no big loss his act is getting old and he is an average coach at best.

The league is becoming a joke, its all about money.

  9. I think that’s a bit harsh. Tonkin should’ve been fined and suspended for the stunt, but it was probably spur-of-the-moment, and the rest of the organization had nothing to do with it. Being stripped a pick seems a bit excessive, honestly.

  10. Wow. Not surprised. Too bad we won’t be here t be penalized. The Steeler Football League opens up shop next year after we win this last Lombardi.

Again, what a joke this league has become. We will overcome. We always overcome.

    6 7 rings

Here we go Steelers; here we go.

    Steel rings live on.

  11. Gödel is way out of line here. look around the league at the activities of coaches, players on and off the field in the last few years , this is another brick in the wall for the NFL.

  12. Tomlin seems to be looking for a way out of Pitt, that seems certain. A late round pick is meaningless …. he should have been suspended but that is what he wanted. He has disgraced a proud franchise.

  13. All efforts to stop the steelers is futile. Save your energy. The city of champions can’t be stopped by losing a late round draft pick. One less person we have to cut in training camp.

  14. Hate the Steelers. But this is absurd.

Waiting to hear what the punishment is for the officials who ignored/missed the maneuver, could have thrown a flag and ended all of this ridiculous nonsense right then.

Because that is why the league is resorting to this. Because they can’t go back in time and fix what should have been correctly addressed when it occurred. And that’s really what is at stake here; Tomlin made the league look foolish.

Until the officials are held to a higher standard and policed during games, none of the teams we follow are safe from their folly.

    Go Patriots!

  15. The NFL reported after reviewing film on Tomlin that he has habit of going out on the field. Just so happens it was never involved in a play. His character should not be in question here. He has done nothing for people to question it and respects the organization.

  16. The officials saw the play and did not flag it. It is unfair for the NFL to penalize the team by taking away draft picks. Past incidents did not warrant that.

  17. The NFL fully intends on taking away the compensatory pick the Steelers would have gotten for Mike Wallace, which will probably be a 3rd rounder.

    Intent doesn’t matter.

There’s a rulebook and it’s a penalty to be on the white stripe and also a penalty to interfere with play…. end of story. Also, it’s much worse because a head coach did it.

  19. As compensation for interfering with a play in progress, the Steelers have been ordered to lose a head coach.

  20. Steelers “will lose a draft choice”… ??? such bs!!! who is the specific source from the NFL that said this… LaCanfora… is LaFrabricator…. he should be fired!!! There is abosolutely no truth to this statement according to my sources…. and my sources are as real as LaCanfora’s… my sources wouldn’t lie or fabricate bs… and finally Tomlin did not interfere with the jones… suggest you check the video closely from in front of Tomlin… Tomlin was 2 yards away from jones as he passed… how could that be interference??? Allen was going to tackle him with or without interference…
