Carroll will research whether Seahawks should have let 49ers score

AP

Late in Sunday’s Seahawks-49ers game, San Francisco, trailing 17-16, marched deep into Seattle territory. The 49ers were able to run six plays, force the Seahawks to use their remaining timeouts, run two minutes off the clock, and finally kick the winning field goal with 26 seconds left.

That raises an interesting question: Should the Seahawks have allowed the 49ers to score a touchdown as soon as they got into field goal range? That would have meant the Seahawks would need a touchdown, not just a field goal, to come back and win. But it also would have given the Seahawks a lot more time to score.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that question occurred to him at the time, and he briefly discussed it with his assistants. But Carroll said it was his gut feeling that he doesn’t believe in allowing opposing teams to score.

“There’s a lot of gut in that decision,” Carroll said on 710 ESPN. “We had the talk, and it’s just not in our mentality to let anybody have anything.”

Still, Carroll said he’s going to look into whether it might have been beneficial for the Seahawks to let the 49ers score.

“I’m going to do a little research this week and see if anyone has ever done that and won,” Carroll said.

There have been high-profile instances of teams allowing opponents to score touchdowns, including the Patriots allowing the Giants to score late in Super Bowl XLVI and the Packers allowing the Broncos to score late in Super Bowl XXXII. In those cases, however, the tactic didn’t result in a dramatic come-from-behind win. And unless Carroll can find a prior example of a team actually winning after letting the other team score, he doesn’t sound interested in conceding a touchdown to an opposing team.

  1. The Jaguars took it a step further earlier this year, allowing the opposition to score three or four uncontested touchdowns early in the game. Giving them oodles of time to mount a comeback.

  2. Lets not forget that SF has a coach too and can instruct his players NOT to score, to just keep the ball safe and stop before the goal line.

  3. If the Hawks wouldn’t have let Kaep get the first down on a QB keeper-sweep they would’ve had plenty of time to get down the field and kick their own winning FG.

Better yet, if they hadn’t allowed Frank Gore to get 51 yards a few plays earlier they wouldn’t have had to score anything.

  4. Carroll has indeed shown a lot of times in the past to miss playing the percentages in certain situations where he could be icing down a major enhanced advantage. That’s the weakest area of his coaching game. Although nobody else in the NFL has that stuff down to a science, but for a coach that knows how to play the odds for key situations that represents a significant way to get an easy and totally free boost to the winnability percent. Lots of choices for serious consequences that can come up in a football game and they key is to not miss choosing the best options for all of those scenarios.

  6. carroll is an idiot, of course u let SF score, it gives u like 1:30 left instead of :26 secs

  7. Yeah, and I’m going to research whether dropping out of school three years ago was the best move from a long term employment perspective. One of these days.

  8. ♫ I’m proud to be a Steeler fan, where at least I know we’re great. And I won’t forget the rings we earned, while all you sit there and hate. And we proudly stand up above you and laugh right in your face. There ain’t no doubt that God is a part of the Steeler faith. ♫

  9. research this ! how ur d gave up a 51 yard run to gore!!! how u like those apples!!!! 49ers proved they are a better team and to all of u dogging kapp look at Russell wilsons numbers yesterday! Sherman got treated like a shrimp!! boldin is a beast

  10. No you don’t research whether anyone has Won letting the other team score a td,
you research by finding out how often teams come back to win down by 8 vs
how often teams down by 2 with 26 seconds or less come back to win.
because coaches are old and not very smart, they don’t try this strategy enough to get a decent sample size.

  11. “We had the talk, and it’s just not in our mentality to let anybody have anything.”

So you’d rather have a zero percent chance of winning than a small chance? Doesn’t matter if it hasn’t been successful yet; as we all know, there’s a first time for everything.

  12. Mike Holmgren did this at least twice that I can remember. Once he won the game another he went 4 plays and out. If your a defensive team stand behind your strength.

He made the right call. Seattle scored 3 points in the second half. Allowing a td would have out his team in a hell if a hole in our least friendly stadium.

  13. Remember Westrbrook against the Cowboys a few years ago, or Celek this week. Veterans like Frank Gore know to not score in that situation

  14. With a young qb who already threw a pick and with the team not getting in the end zone much all day I think that was the way to play it.

  15. It would have been entertaining to see them try to let them score and have Gore go down at the 1. I guess the clock keeps running until he gets touched?

  16. It is a desperation move and one that not many coaches consider let alone actually try. Therefore there are not going to be many examples or any representation of the true probability.

My gut says they would be better off letting them score, especially once the 49ers got that first down on the Kaepernick run and could run the clock down to 20 seconds.

LOTS of IFS. Fact is that the Seahawks LET gore slip through and make that run. *IF* Kap had not thrown an interception on the 1 yard line niners would not have had to make a field goal with time about to run out. Games are always won on IFS. This one just happens to belong to the Niners

How did they prove that they’re the better team? We beat them 29-3 earlier in the season and they won by only two points hmmm..makes sense^_^

Yeah, that makes a tons of sense, especially considering you’re actually trailing in the game and have kept the Seattle offense relatively in check. Brilliant. smh

Anyone with half a brain knows that you take the score (a touchdown in this case) and then you rely on your defense to make a late-game stand.

  23. Obviously, this thought took place before Kaepernick’s first down run. After that, the game was over. If they were going to let them score, it would have been right after Gore’s run, which put them in field goal range. There still would have been plenty of time on the clock to drive and attempt a TD to win. Would have made the game a lot more exciting, that’s for sure!

  24. Um duh of course they should have the Seahawks would have had more time to score. Of course Pete Carroll blows a game for the Seahawks he did a lot of that with the Patriots too. Now you know how it feels Seattle.

  25. Here is the research Pete:

    November 3rd, 2003 – on MNF – Patriots @ Broncos

BB orders the Patriots to take a safety as he believes his defense will get the ball back in better field position. Then Tom Terrific drives the team down and fires a TD to David Givens with 18 seconds left.

You just need to have the cojones to do it.

  26. Letting a team score would be a perversion of football but if he wants to study letting teams score than he should try it on the field in the Seahawks first playoff game. However, only one score wouldn’t give you an appropriate sample size to base a conclusion on, you just wouldn’t be able to add her all up.

  27. Once they were inside the 20 and running the ball, they should have let them score. They would have trailed by no more than 7 if SF made the 2 pt conversion. You cannot count on a turnover or missed chip shot fg to save the game.

Let them score and go try to tie or win it. You have no control without the ball. Too many coaches over think these situations. What matters if you lose by 2 or by 5,6,7? A loss is a loss. Play the game to win.

  28. 2 weeks ago, San Jose State employed this strategy to perfection. They were losing by 1 and Navy had the ball on the 20. They let Navy score making it an 8 point game with 2:00 left (instead of having Navy simply kill the clock). They got the ball, scored a TD, successfully converted the 2 point attempt and forced overtime.

  29. Maybe Pete Carroll can also research why he is now 0-4 at Candlestick Park , and how the Seahawks got held to just 83 yards of total offense in the second half of this game?

I thought Seahawk fans were predicting a coronation of their team last evening, with a NFC West Title. Based on his postgame comments, Richard Sherman certainly seemed to think so. So, what went wrong?

  30. Well we don’t have to go too far to see an instance when Carroll’s philosophy worked. 2007 Seahawks-Cowboys Wildcard game. The Cowboys were kicking a 20 yd field goal and Romo botched it. I like the idea of conceding a touchdown, but as someone said, the offense does not need to capitulate, so the point is likely moot.

  31. Those of you that are obviously horrible at life and post the “cheat” “PED” crap on EVERY Seahawk article, does it actually hurt to be so moronic? Like physically?

  32. Last 4 games Seattle vs San Fran. Niners two home wins by average of 4 points. Seahawks 2 wins by average of 29 points. Hawks would love to play them again, believe that.

  33. On a side note…Michael Crabtree comes back and now all of a sudden they are a complete team. News flash….Percy Harvin will be ready come playoff time, and since he is the most dynamic weapon in the NFL…I guess seattle will finally be complete too. Good luck at the link

Is that why every time there us a 49er article there is almost more pedhawk fans commenting than Niner fans?

  35. If they were New England it wouldn’t matter what they did. Brady would just throw a 60 yard bomb, draw a PI call, and they kick the winning FG.

  36. @ dukeearl

Hey genius, I’m a die hard Niner Faithful and this story was posted not only on the Niner page but on the FRONT page of the website.

And talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Every last one of you bandwagon hoping hacks jump on every Niner article. Seems like you can dish it but can’t take it.

    In summation, PEDs goodnight.

  37. Niners won straight up. Congrats. I’m not complaining about play calls or officiating. See you in playoffs

  38. Has anybody thought that maybe, just maybe, Carrol dropped the game to manipulate the brackets for the playoffs with just 3 games left?…hmm..make the 49ers be taken care of by other teams?…cos they know there’s a big possibility that they can clinch the division after winning in Jersey…

  39. SeAderall Seahawks played a decent game despite all the cheating. You can almost respect them until I heard all the excuses some of their players came up with. What a shame.

I’m surprised a NFL Head a coach hasn’t called a lot of runs towards Sherman’s side of his field and just have blockers T off on him. Make him cash out on some of those wolf tickets he’s selling.

  40. Refs accounted for 10 points the 49ers didn’t earn in that game, just like the Colts game where refs caused a 15 point swing in favor of the Colts. The real score was 17-9 or at best 17-13, Seahawks.

Seahawks have been called for 104 penalties this year. Its opponents have been called for 74. That differential of 30 is largest in NFL.

NFL/Refs are targeting Seahawks. Won’t matter. We’ll win it all anyway.

  41. Did anyone hear the Dori Monson show today? A 49ers fan literally said that seattle fans should be quiet when the 9ers play in seattle to make it more fair. Get real. That fan base is a joke

Pete Carroll didn’t blow the game, the defense did by allowing Gore to break free for 51. Then compounded that by allowing Kaepernick to run for a first on the ensuing 3rd down. If Kaepernick doesn’t get that first down, they kick the field goal and there’s plenty of time for the Seahawks to have a shot. Did Carroll know the defense was going to let Kaepernick get that first? If so, then you’re right, he blew it. But he didn’t. Also, Carroll’s taken the Seahawks from a 4 win team to 11 so far this year. We feel GREAT about Carroll.

  43. why do seabirds continue to talk smack? You’ve done nothing….never won a SB….until then….ssshhh…you’re embarrassing….Saints and 49whiners have Lombardi’s….you remain just a good regular season team…fact….

  44. Sweetlow44 no you guys feel good about the defense and Russell Wilson before they arrived the Seahawks went to 2 playoff games under Carroll because the NFC West was weak. Any coach could go to Seattle and do well with the talent they have. Carroll has nothing to do with their success.

  45. NFL/Refs are targeting Seahawks. Won’t matter. We’ll win it all anyway.
    …………………………..

Or it could be possible that the team is just extremely undisciplined on and off the field. Guess that never crossed your mind. Blame Pete

    Oh, this is rich.

Let me see, coaches, teams and fans can’t stand each other. BIG mouth sherman is saying the outcome was supposed to end with a stomping of the Niners and complains the reason they lost is because of the referees.

Now it’s because they lost on purpose to manipulate the seeding? Trust me, I think you are the only one that would think of something like that.

  47. Didn’t matter if he wanted the Niners to score or not. His plan for the last drive was to throw it deep and hope for a ref to throw a flag. I mean c’mon, that last pass by Wilson… the WR clearly flopped in hopes to get a flag and put the ball in field goal range. 100% planned by Cheat Carroll. Too bad for the PEDhawks that Eric Wright came up with the INT, or else they would’ve tried it agian.

    #cheatersdonotprevail

  48. Now I am a die hard niner fan, and my hatred for pete Carroll is almost as passionate as the love for my niners. That being said, Pete Carroll is a competitor, he ain’t giving up a td, he is proud of his teams defensive stats, and he should be. I’m sure he thought about it, but I’m sure he liked his chance of Russell Wilson putting the hags in field goal range to win the game, versus having to score a td. Pete knows Seahawks have been coming up clutch, I know I held my breath when Wilson aired it out at the end. That game was as hard fought a game, as I’ve seen all year, and it could’ve went either way, all the 12th women not giving the niners their proper respect just make it that much more obvious how bandwagon they are, it’s been a lot longer since you guys won at the stick , since we’ve won at century link. Now it is looking more like this might be your guys year, but all you bandwagon loudmouths that are already shining up your Lombardi trophy, haven’t been watching football long enough to know the true meaning of ” any given Sunday “.

Surely those unaware of this, appreciate this example.

I would, however, question the use of the words
“to perfection” since San Jose did in fact LOSE that game.

  50. The Eagles have repeatedly avoided scoring late in games to keep the ball and eat clock. Just last week Celek slid on snow.

In the Pats vs. Giants bowl, Bradshaw fell down at the 1 yd line to avoid scoring but momentum carried him in. Players are wise to this.

  51. By coincidence Seattle covered the -2.5 spread on the Vegas betting line. Had they allowed a touchdown then failed to drive the field in the extra time, they would not have covered the spread. Losing meant little for their playoff schedule, and in fact they might want to face San Francisco eventually because of familiarity. One win gives them the division, and two home field advantage through the NFC playoffs with three games to play.

  52. “I’m going to do a little research this week and see if anyone has ever done that and won,” Carroll said.

Even for Pete the cheat Carroll, this is amazingly ignorant.

I know he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer and tries to make up for it with PED’s, but even Pete Carroll knows this was done before.

Pete the cheat needs to focus on what he does best, cheat.

  53. This simply means that Bubblegum Carroll does NOT trust his teams highly touted explosive revolutionary godgiven self proclaimed best offense in the NFL to march down the field and score a TD against the Niners D with less than two mins in the game. Research why the inconvenient truth could not be held in by the same proclaimed defense. And research why a 2 pt win by SF offsets a blowout loss in SEA because as Seattle is so very good at saying after they scraped by the worst teams in the NFL, a win is a win. Double standard? Can’t come on here and say “your win is less important because it was by two” because all that means is that Seattles wins against Houston and STL were less than SFs.

sit down and shut up, 2-2 over the last two years and the last “real” loss (not counting fail Mary) in Seattle was against SF. Think you’ve figured us out yet??

  54. The only conclusion you can make regarding this game and these two teams is…the 49ers and Seahawks are CLEARLY the NFC’s best two squads. It’s not even close.

As far as allowing the other team to score, I’d put the odds at about 75-1 the Seahawks score a TD with the way the Niners were playing defense that given day. That SF defense was stout and have been stout.

As far as the proposed rematch in Seattle, I have the following observation. In the Sept 15th game, it was 12-3 Seattle going into the 4th quarter. That game was much closer than the final score indicated.

The NFC Championship should come down to these two. The Saints, Bears, Lions, Eagles etc are good teams but the Niners are clearly the only legit team with a chance to beat Seattle at the Clink.

  55. Love it when non-seahawk fans troll Seahawk news.

All it means is that they can’t handle the truth that their team is worse than the Seahawks.
    **************************************************************************
How does it feel to lose to a team that is worse?
Seattle was penalized several times, but I saw so many holds and interference that were not called, it would not have been a close game except for the fact that Seattle has already been declared the NFC Champ by many, and they seem to be getting an inordinate amount of passes now.

  56. 49er fan logic

Sherman allows 1 catch – Sherman was treated like a shrimp

Kaep completes over 50% of his passes – Kaep played like a beast!!

They beat the Seahawks in SF – 49ers are the better team now, they would win easily in Seattle

Also remember that Harvin, Thurmond and maybe Browner will be back for that potential game in Seattle

  57. To all the niner faithful live it up that’s going to be your one win that you can look back on the year and be like at least we beat the Seahawks, meanwhile the Seahawks will be winning the Super Bowl .

  58. I was at the game Sunday, and WOW what an atmosphere. Die hard 49er fan, but also a fan of the game, AND of competition in general. I think Russell Wilson is an amazing QB and every time he drops back, I get nervous. I have not seen someone mentally control a game/offense the way he does. I believe Kaep lacks some of the mental attributes (or as Trent Dilfer and Jaws would say repeatedly, “The INTANGIBLES!”). All that being said, these two teams are top in the NFC. It will be a great showdown at year’s end. I do not expect Seattle to go 1-2 in the final games, so it is a safe bet they will win the division and have home field. I wish there was more competitive admiration for both teams, as opposed to all of the ill will and hate between the fan bases. My only issue with Seattle has to be Richard Sherman. He is a perennial jersey tugger, and runs his mouth about as much as Boldin ran over him Sunday. I do not believe his play backs up the comments he makes, otherwise it would be different. Guys like Deion and Chad Johnson used trash talk as an effective motivator and intimidation tactic, while keeping it in jest and in good spirits. Sherman tends to be more arrogant (actually, seems to be defensive of his own talents, even when they are not being called into question i.e. First Take “interview” [more like berating] with Skip Bayless). I hope the games remain competitive and I hope the fans do not cause or get caught up in any unfortunate situations during or after their next matchup. Let’s keep it on the field and enjoy these two power teams!
