Rams stifle Saints offense in 27-16 victory

AP

The Saints haven’t been a great road team this year, something that’s often blamed on the difficulties involved with playing outdoors rather than in the Superdome.

It seems the issues can’t all be explained away by the presence of the elements, though. The Saints offense had an erratic day and quarterback Drew Brees turned the ball over three times in a 27-16 Rams victory in St. Louis that kept the Saints from claiming a playoff spot.

The Saints will have to play well away from home to hold off the Panthers for the division title or they will have to win outside New Orleans for three straight weeks to make the Super Bowl. The problems on offense started right away as Brees was picked off on his first throw and flared up throughout the night as the offensive line continually got run over. Brees was sacked four times and linemen were flagged several times for penalties while trying to handle their business.

Defensive end Robert Quinn had two sacks and forced a fumble to help stake the Rams to a 27-3 lead that the defense maintained by forcing the Saints to exchange a lot of clock for points down the stretch. New Orleans had a chance to make things more interesting with just under two minutes to play, but kicker Garrett Hartley badly shanked a short field goal try and the Rams celebrated.

It was Hartley’s second miss of the game and one last frustration on day with no shortage of them. Jimmy Graham had just two catches, the run defense was torn apart by 133 yards from Zac Stacy and the defense produced neither a turnover nor a sack. The poor effort may turn out to be nothing more than delayed gratification for the Saints, but you can be sure it will be remembered as something much worse than that if the Saints are on the road in early January.

  1. Two blocked Chip Shots, Two drew brees picks. End of story. The saints keep putting themselves in these big holes and they just cant keep doing this. This isnt a SB caliber team unless they can figure out how to run the ball WHEN THEY WANT TO. This team will be a MUCH better team once they get some actual talent on the defense side of the ball and a better O-line. Rob Ryans scheme has made the D seem much better than it is. Rob get’s them in the correct place, but at the end of the day the players have to make the plays.

  2. The NFCW is no joke. If they never used to play each other they would all have vastly better records… They know how to play defense and rush the Passer…

The Saints woke up a little after the Seattle blowout, but they face a Stout panthers team… Team that had already peaked maybe to early but still a very formidable foe.. Two best teams in the NFC right now are the Seahawks and Niners.. Seahawks are the clear class of the entire league especially after losses by Saints, Broncos, and Pats all of whom felt like they got exposed today by defenses… Injuries sminjuries… The seahawks at one point were missing 4 starting offensive linemen and still win games.. The Niners were depleted in the wr corps and found ways to win some close games…

NFCW reigns supreme as we all heard all off-season. Rarely does it actually occur but this year it has..

  3. Saints are weak as heck. If they aren’t getting praised for 3 hours by Al Michaels on SNF, and constantly showing Brees’ corny mannerisms…it’s over. Play somewhat of a tough team and they’re doomed. This is why a team like SF or SEA will go the distance in the NFC

  4. Drew Brees is softer than toilet tissue….CONFIRMED! Get ready for some revenge in Charlotte next week! Saints are nothing without a lil home cooking from the refs in the Stuperdome! Ice up son!

  5. If this keeps up, the NFL may have to investigate who is in those Saints jerseys on the road vs. at home.

    Talk about TWO completely teams.

With the Saints it isn’t just a “home field advantage” – it’s do or die.

  6. “Drew Brees is soft” Says the moron who has nothing to say when the saints win. Please tell me what Drew brees is supposed to do with no run game, a crap kicker, and the defense not showing up today. Please, tell me.

    Demand an explanation?

  8. I have no idea what is going on with the Saints on the road. They are now 3-4 on the road. They keep on saying they are getting off to slow starts but why? There is no reason for Hartley to miss those field goals and we should be running better and stop trying to run the ball late in games. Even last Sunday when we beat the panthers we still had under 100 rushing yards. The Saints have to get better if they want to make the Superbowl even the NFC championship game

  9. Breese is going to break a bunch of all time passing records and go down in history as one of the best, ever. And you are going to look like a fool.

  10. Yeah, because that joke hasn’t been used a million times. “Drew brees demands an explanation yuck yuck yuck yuck! Get it? Because drew brees said he demanded an explanation over a year ago? yuck yuck yuck yuck!”

  11. From a Seahawks’ fan – great game Rams.

Not because you beat the Saints but because you made a statement and played with a vengeance. In fact the entire NFC West made a statement today. We are a division to be reckoned with! Our next two games (AZ and SL) will be good games I’m sure.

    Again, congrats!

Um….except the Panthers beat San Fran.

    On the road.

But don’t let a little thing like a head-to-head win get in the way of anointing San Fran superior to a team that already beat them.

Anyone here want to give the Rams and Fisher some credit?

No. The outcome was decided the moment it was scheduled in STL.

  14. Saints were crushed today. No debate in that – just want to know if I’m crazy in becoming irate every time I see the following scenario:

Saints ball, 3rd and 17 – clock winding down, Brees calls timeout to avoid 5 yard penalty.

    WHY CALL THE TIMEOUT!?!?!?!!?!

You are down by 3 scores, and are unlikely to convert a 3rd and 17 – what difference would a 3rd and 23 be? I’m assuming you can call the same check down play to get in FG range, except now you waste a timeout that the game is dictating you will probably need at the end of the game.

But even better after the timeout, strip-sack fumble.

I always seem to see this dumb timeout called by Brees/Saints

NFC west>saints (you robbed the niners and I’m a hawks fan)
    ……………………………………………………………………

Rams fan and yes. Niners were the better team on that day.

  16. Reggie Bush’s Dad – Totally agree.

There are also the situations in a close game in the 3rd quarter when a coach will challenge a 5 yard gain on 2nd down. You lose what could be a huge time-out at the end of the game to gain 5 yards?

And, the some absent-minded TV commentator will say, “Good Challenge, coach!”. Then the same commentator will criticize the same coach in the 4th quarter for “wasting time-outs”.

Coaches and teams constantly burn time-outs in utterly unnecessary circumstances.

  17. Agreed on Quinn, but because he’s on a losing team in the middle of the country, we’ll see someone less deserving take those honors.

  18. I have never heard or seen Payton as I heard and saw him in the post game interview. He prefaced his remarks that he would check the tape carefully first, but that some players would find themselves losing their starting jobs and others will be served notice. This may be the worst loss in Payton’s tenure with the Saints because of where the Saints are at this time and what is expected of the players.

  19. I said best teams right now ,yes panthers beat the niners but they are playing progressively worse and the niners are starting to catch stride … I know records and head to head bud I’m not stupid just watching each team play it’s on film.. The panthers have been playing worse and worse weekly while sf has been playing better .. I’m a Seahawks fan not a homer ..

Cam he become very pedestrian passing .. His Achilles heal has been inconsistency which we saw today and the last 4-5 games ..

  20. Believe it, the Saints can’t overcome there demons on the road. You have to be a road warrior during reg. season if you want home games in January.

Here’s the bottom line-Payton can’t give anymore kitchen passes to this kicker. He’s inconsistent but his mechanics are poor if he can’t get it up. Time to stop reliving his success in ’09 and roll the dice on a kicker who can get it up!

Why the Saints will be a Wildcard…

It was apparent The Rams watched the Seahawks/Saints game and exposed those demons.

The offensive line features starting linemen that wouldn’t make it on a CFL scout team. They can’t protect Brees.

Offense has no identity in the ground game.

Jimmy Graham has been hurting for weeks and looked like it today.

Defense has been consistent at NOT stopping the run all year.

Special teams is not a threat to make a game changing play.

Drew Brees must have shrunk after last season cuz he looks shorter this season.

I’m sorry but no one can convince me this team is going to march into Charlotte and beat the Panthers on Sunday.

Hence, the Saints will enter the playoffs thru the back door as a wild card, maybe win one on the road, but I wouldn’t hold my breath my fellow Saints fans. Yes, I’m a Saints fan that sees the writing on the wall!

  21. Who DAT??? The Rams! Read a few comments. One from: allidoiswin55 and abghawks and appreciate gamesmanship comments. Yes The NFC WEST IS best division in NFL. Two yrs and running. If u look back since 1999, which division has represented the NFC in Super Bowls??
    Rams 1999, 2001
    Cardinals 2008
    Seattle 2005
    49ers 2012

1-3 but great Super Bowls. Should be 2-2 but you know, Partiots cheated a ring off Rams and 2 more after that. Pats 0-2 since caught!

As a Rams fan and what is looking like #1 Draft pick which will obviously be traded again to a QB hungry team who will trade multiple picks on a not so sure QB…example RG3. So loving our future outlook. Chris Long and My man, Robert Quinn, who dropped in draft couple yrs ago and was happy when drafted, are monsters who are underated as one of the best duo bookends in league!

Im a happy Ram fan considering the past few yrs before Fisher arrived. The progress is obvious. Well heres to next year Rams fans and ill b rooting for NFC west in Super Bowl again!

  22. For all you naysayers who apparently don’t bother to check your facts BEFORE you post, the Saints overall home vs road record is great. Yeah, I said it…Saints road record since 2006 is 35-26. Until 2011, the Saints held the #1 place for most road wins out of ALL teams in the league. So perception vs reality here differs quite a bit from all of you posting without the actual facts.

In addition, since 2006 (Payton hire), Saints have a 67-37 record…and Payton ranks #6 among all NFL coaches in the league (current) for top winning percentage.

So NO…the Saints do not suck, they are not terrible and their record and stats say so. ONE game does not make a season. They are 10-4, that’s better than most of YOUR teams…so move on.

I hate it when people go on and on about something they obviously know nothing about.

Check the facts before you post, ok? I did…easy.

    ————————————————–

Yes. The Rams outplayed the Saints and deserved the win and could be the deciding factor as to whether the Saints play at least one game at home or not.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but arn’t the comments on a posting supposed to be based on that particular game. This comment, like others, has no bearing on the original posting.
If you want to comment on how your team is doing, whether good or bad, comment under postings for them, that way a genuine fan wouldn’t need to read all the crap like this.

  25. How can you say the miners deserved to beat us we gifted you 14 points from our muffed punt etc so when are you niner fans going to realize we deserved to beat you guys. St. Louis deserved to beat us today we were terrible.

  26. The Saints offensive line has been bad all year, I don’t know how they have managed to win ten games this year, Charles Brown is not the answer at left tackle, he was bad last year, and again this year. The rest of the offensive line is almost as bad, I’m amazed Brees is still healthy. The Saints will not improve until they get better O line, another receiver that can run, and get open, and a little help at cornerback…this from a Saints fan!
