Week 16 power rankings

AP

1. Broncos (12-3; No. 2):  They started the regular season 6-0 without Von Miller. They’ll now have to try to win half as many postseason games without him.

2.  Seahawks (12-3; last week No. 1):  Some would say the Cardinals gave the rest of the NFC playoff field hope by winning in Seattle.  Chances are the Cardinals simply gave the Seahawks a wake-up call.

3. Panthers (11-4; No. 3):  Luke Kuechly may have won defensive player of the year based on Week 16 alone.

4. Patriots (11-4; No. 4):  And just when it looks like the wheels are coming off, the car is once again cruising at top speed.

5. 49ers (11-4; No. 6):  NaVorro Bowman went from Bill Buckner to David Ortiz in roughly five minutes of real time.

6. Saints (10-5; No. 5):  Before the Saints will earn the right to lose on the road in the playoffs, they’ll have to win one more game at home.

7. Eagles (9-6; No. 9):  Before Philly sends out the playoff tickets, the Eagles need to figure out how to score more than three points against the Cowboys.

8.  Cardinals (10-5; No. 10):  In some respects, 2013 will be even more important to the franchise than 2008.

9.  Chiefs (11-4; No. 7):  Andy Reid brought John Harbaugh in to the NFL, and Reid can help take Harbaugh’s team out of the 2013 playoffs by resting starters at San Diego.

10. Bengals (10-5; No. 11):  With a 7-0 record at home and the AFC North title nailed down, this could be the year the Bengals break the curse of Bo Jackson’s hip.

11.  Colts (10-5; No. 13):  If the Colts could play as well in a meaningful game as they played in a meaningless game, they could go far in January.

12. Ravens (8-7; No. 8):  It’s too bad Justin Tucker couldn’t kick 14 field goals on Sunday.

13. Chargers (8-7; No. 16):  Before we carve a name on the coach of the year trophy, let’s not forget the guy who once got more than anyone ever has out of Tim Tebow.

14.  Steelers (7-8; No. 19):  The Steelers were left for dead after losing at home to the Bengals.  Just like in 2005.

15. Cowboys (8-7; No. 17):  When it comes to NFC East title games, maybe the third time will be a charm.

16. Packers (7-7-1; No. 14):  Maybe the Packers should put their “organizational decisions” to a vote of the shareholders.

17.  Bears (8-7; No. 12):  On the bright side, it could be getting a lot cheaper to re-sign Jay Cutler.

18. Dolphins (8-7; No. 15):  Winning games a team is supposed to lose makes it even harder to not lose the games a team is supposed to win.

19. Rams (7-8; No. 18):  With seven wins and the first pick in the draft, the Rams could win 11 games next year.  And still finish last in the division.

20. Jets (7-8; No. 21):   Rex Ryan deserves credit for coaxing seven wins out of a horrible roster.

21.  Bills (6-9; No. 22):  One of these years, the Bills will make it back to the playoffs.  We think.

22.  Giants (6-9; No. 25):  In any other division, the Giants would need major surgery to contend in 2014.  In the NFC East, they don’t need to do much to get back to the top.

23.  Lions (7-8; No. 20):  If the Lions couldn’t win the division this year, maybe they never will.

24. Titans (6-9; No. 24):  It’s fitting that Mike Munchak’s three-decade run with the Titans could end with a game against the team that plays in the city where Munchak got started.

25.  Jaguars (4-11; No. 22):  Find the right quarterback, and the Jaguars could find their way to contention.

26.  Vikings (4-10-1; No. 26):  Three years after the roof collapsed on the Metrodome, the curtain falls for a team that needs to get the hook.

27. Buccaneers (4-11; No. 27):  They’ve got a chance to get some company in their misery, if they can beat the Saints.

28.  Browns (4-11; No. 28):  Is it too late for Jimmy Haslam to get a refund?

29.  Falcons (4-11; No. 29):  At least the most recent last-second loss to the 49ers didn’t cost them a Super Bowl berth.

30.  Raiders (4-11; No. 30):  Dennis Allen isn’t setting Terrelle Pryor up to fail.  It will happen naturally.

31. Redskins (3-12; No. 31):  Plenty of cap space and a high first-round draft pick will help turn this mess around.  Oh.

32. Texans (2-13; No. 32):  At least their free agents won’t look as attractive to other teams this year.

  1. You dropped the Bengals a bunch of spots last week because of one division loss on the road that had more to do with special teams than anything else. The Seahawks drop one after losing at home in front of the lauded 12th man. Glad to see everything still makes sense here. hmm…

  2. So we went spinning out of control last week, gushing over the Ravens after barely beating the hapless Lions and Vikings with considerable help from the Refs. It wouldn’t surprise me if you somehow still thought they were a lock for the AFC North title.

  3. This late into the season, the teams are what they are. Kind of hard to move them around unless a team throws a stinker of a game.

  4. I don’t know if the Cardinals gave my Hawks a wake up call or caught Seattle napping. Seattle’s post season starts this Sunday. Go HAWKS!

  5. Cards and Chiefs ranked above Bengals? Pure madness. I know the Bengals aren’t as good on the road but they’re easily better than both of these teams.

  6. After the pedhawks lost to the 49er’s and then the Cardinals shouldn’t that be a wake up wake up call?

That game was was great, in the spirit of Christmas instead of Silent Night, we have Silent 12th Man.

  7. Cardinals and Eagles better than the Bengals? I could see the Eagles but c’mon. The Bengals just came off of a thrashing of the Vikings. You know, the team that had just beaten the Eagles.

  8. beleive me, at the owners meating we will be talking about this RODGERS INJURY. this is unexcepatable and ted will hear from us. the people own this team!

Hagel Aaron Rodgers! Er wird uns zu einer anderen Ordnung gebracht super bowl Entsprechung der rechten Beamten führen!

  9. OMG!! for the last time, The Packers fans do not want an owner, or for the 363,000 random shareholders, or the executive board to vote on a medical decision. The worst 20 years of packers history was when football decisions were not made by football people, instead by executives.

we trust our superbowl winning coaching staff and front office… and don’t want a Jerry Jones. The good owners, like Kraft and Rooney keep these things in team hands anyway.

It’s frustrating to see #12 on sidelines, but these points are ridiculous.

  10. Hawks lose to a very good, desperate team with the help of a couple game-changing botched calls from the stripes, they are one of the worst teams in the league now apparently. Sleep on the Hawks at your own peril trolls. Zona is a much better, more balanced team than the Whiners, they would have no hope of pulling off a win like that at the Clink.

  11. Who counted us out? When our backs were against the wall, we only fought harder. This is who we are. This is our mental fabric. We are born as Steelers and Steelers win championships. Through the grace of God, the Steelers – an extension of God’s will – will make the playoffs and glide through the playoffs for yet another world title.

It’s fairly easy to see why people dislike the Steelers: we have six rings, the largest fan base, God’s blessing, top-notch front office, superior coaching staff, Steeler-born players, and a tradition of excellence (click our username for more). This is understandable and we apologize that things are this way, but our raison detre, as an advanced race, is to make sure you understand your place below us.

After this Super Bowl victory, and, oh, will it be the most glorious, we will launch the long-anticipated Steeler Football League, where real football will be revived and tackling will be permitted. That’s right, we are going back to the basics; we are bringing the game back to its essence. Year one will consist of eight teams of the original Steelers franchise being processed through a draft. Afterward there will a screening for NFL players will to transfer to the SFL, but first must be deemed “worthy” and they, too, will go through a separate draft process.

Inferiors, we will miss you. You have brought us many laughs. Though you were never truly a challenge for us, we mildly respect you. Without the refs, you never would have won a single game, but the Steeler-NFL conflict is an old one which cannot be conceivably discussed in this post. Thanks for your “competition” and good luck on future failures.

Now, let’s go out with song: ♫ I’m proud to be a Steeler fan, where at least I know we’re great. And I won’t forget the rings we earned all along the way. And we proudly stand up above you and laugh right in your face. There ain’t no doubt that God is a part of the Steeler faith. ♫

  12. Cardinals 7 out of last 8 with that one iffy “loss” to the Eagles, I’d rank them higher than the Saints and Eagles and maybe above the 49ers and Pats as well. They may well end this season beating 4 teams that had 11 or more wins, including Carolina, Seattle, Indy and the 49ers. Really impressive turnaround. Taking the season as a whole, with their 3-4 start, this ranking is about right. They won’t even make the playoffs, but I don’t know if there would be a more scary team to face right now if they did.

  13. 30. Raiders (4-11; No. 30): Dennis Allen isn’t setting Terrelle Pryor up to fail. It will happen naturally.

    LMAO..brilliant!

  14. I agree with the Seattle statement. Some said the 49er loss would remind them that they aren’t invincible. They pitch a shutot the next week in NY. As a 49er fan, yeah, I’m pretty happy to see that they CAN be beat at home. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that next week the Rams will pull off what they almost did up there late last year and win in Seattle and hopefully the 49eers can manage another division championship. Niners would still have to win @AZ though. Should be a great closing weekend! Heck, should SEA AND CAR lose and 9ers win, SF gets homefield throughout. “Not bloody likely” but I’m surprised it’s even a possibility.

  15. Lets be honest here. The Broncos have never truly been anything else but #1.

Aside from some bad breaks, lucky bounces and a short preparation week the Broncos would be undefeated or at worst 14 – 1 right now.

Bad Break – Hillman’s goal line fumble vs. Indy
Lucky Bounce – Muffed punt vs. New England
Short Week – vs. San Diego

  16. If it wasn’t for the refs the Seahags would be 15 -0! Enough already we all get it you clowns actually believe the Hags are going to win the Superbowl… It’s absolutely hilarious I personally cannot wait until their playoff loss and for the real whining and excuses to begin spewing out of that loud mouth obnoxious and delusional fan base in South East Alaska.

  17. If it wasn’t for the refs the Seahags would be 15 -0! 18. Colts with the possibility of becoming a 2 or 3 seed, and their win at Kansas City was meaningless? If you say so!! Maybe you should run the playoff scenarios prior to the power rankings.

  19. “It’s fairly easy to see why people dislike the Steelers: we have six rings”

No one cares about things that happened fifty years ago. When your main bragging point for you team is about a team that ceased to exist years before we were born, you are just showing your desperation.

People don’t dislike the Steelers as much as they dislike Steeler fans, who are that clueless, obnoxious, socially inept guy we all knew in the seventh grade.

People don’t hate the Steelers because they are winners because they aren’t, particularly. People hate the Patriots because they are winners.

The hate Belichick and Brady and the way the team overcomes adversity to win.

They fall back on the tuck rule without a clue as to what it is, call something the Brady rule when it was made after a disgusting hit on Carson Palmer (by the Steelers, btw).

They still while about cheating, never understanding what the issue was (video taping from the wrong spot – taping was legal in other spots) eight years ago.

They don’t like Belichick because he doesn’t kowtow to the league’s stupid rules on injury report and acting like a cheerleading clown – how dumb is that?

They laugh because the Pats went to the superbowl twice in the last six years because the Pats didn’t win. As though their team could even make it twice.

Any reason is fine to hate the Patriots because unlike the Steelers, the Patriots are perennial winners, and fans of loser teams can’t stand it.

People don’t hate the Steelers because they are winners. They hate the Patriots because they are winners. Patriots fans are almost as obnoxious as Steeler fabs, but they have the right. They don’t have to go back the when Reagan was president for their bragging rights.

  20. Week 17 tells the tale. The 9ers beat us and so did the Redbirds. But only one of them is going to win this weekend.

    Hmmmmm, who WILL it be…………..???????

  21. Sooooo, it’s obvious that “The Pittsburgh Steelers” isn’t a Steeler fan, right?

I mean, I’m not the only one who gets that he hates the Steelers and their fans, so he posts crap like that on every article, am I?

  22. Well, obviously Noel Thomas couldn’t figure it out and bit hard on a phony “Steeler fan.”

  23. The Cardinals might be the best team to not make the playoffs. So far, about 6 teams have ruined their “in” for the playoffs (Thanks Falcons).

Last chance is to have the Saints go down.

The good news – Their system, front office etc. is all in place now and we won’t have to wait 7 or 8 games for things to click next year.

  24. The Steelers entry doesn’t make sense. They didn’t lose to the Bengals at home this year, that game was in Cincy. They beat the Bengals in Pittsburgh a few weeks back.

  25. I don’t think your #5 49ers would agree with how low you ranked the Falcons. The Falcons were a pass thrown 12 inches behind the receiver from losing that game.

You really think that in a head to head match up that the Jaguars, Vikings, and Browns are better than the Falcons? The Bucs are a coin toss since they split.

  26. Arizona is better than 3-4 teams listed above them. Their are a lot of NFC HC’s praying they don’t make it because no one wants to see that time right now. That defense they have borders on the best in the NFL. Id give Seattle’s defense a slight edge. Id rank the top 3 defenses 1)SEA 2)ARI 3)SF 4)CAR . Carolina’s secondary is suspect or they would be a lot better. You can bet the Panthers bring in receiver help for Cam , upgrade a few spots on the line , and they will attend to that secondary. They will probably bring in FA’s and draft a CB/FS in the top 3 rounds. What makes no sense to me is all these teams who need secondary help wont sign Kerry Rhodes cause dudes a pole smoker. If he makes your secondary better who cares if he likes balls on his chin. according to PFF he was the number 4 rated FS is the NFL last season. With the Saints of Loss Vaccaro they could use him, as could Carolina.

  27. Glad to see the shehawks and fans still haven’t learned their lesson. Rams will beat you. Bank on it. They have always played you even tougher than Arizona has. Watchimg them flop and then lose im the playoffs will make the best belated xmas gift ever. Can’t wait for the excuses WHEN it happens

  28. How in the world does Seattle drop a knotch for losing a game they really didn’t need against a team that has a much wins than all of the AFC teams except two and be replaced by a Denver team that needed the win to keep their place in the pecking order for the playoffs against a team that now has lost 13 games in a row.

How does SF get bumped up a knotch for having the game gift wrapped to them two days before Christmas from a team that had more total yards, more first downs and more time of possession yet has lost seven of eight games on the road.

  29. I understand ranking the Colts lower now that Reggie Wayne is out..but they just limited the Chiefs to 7 points. The same team that scored 45 and 56 points the previous two weeks. Yes the Chiefs are overrated, but the Colts dominated them. Their offense is finally coming together with Whalen and Rogers, and their D is improving. Look for the Colts to make more noise than people think in the playoffs. They won’t be an easy out. They play better against the best teams (Denver, SF, SEA, KC) so they will bring their A game in the playoffs.

  30. Amended rankings….

SF 49ers – #33 and last. That is, in the hearts of Cardinal fans everywhere. You just ruined their Christmas.

GB Packers – incomplete. As in incomplete pass to end the game. Started out at the Pittsburg 1 yard line with seconds to go in the snow at Lambeau Field. Where have you gone Bart Starr and Jerry Kramer?

  31. Over the last eight seasons up to last weekend’s games, the Saints have the 4th best road record in the NFL.

Yes, the Saints are 0 -5 in postseason, excluding the SB XLIV win in Miami.

Go ahead and say they can’t win on the road; all of the Who Dat Nation welcome it.

First things first, the Saints need to beat the Bucs. Don’t assume the Panthers will just show up in Atlanta and walk over the Falcons.

The #2 seed is on the line; I expect the Saints to take care of business after the Falcons do the same…

  32. Look at the skill position players the Jets have. The only one worth a turd is Kerley and he’s a slot receiver. How the Jets are 7-8 with that steam pile is a credit to Ryan. And he’s probably going to get fired.

  33. Just asking, but don’t the Steelers have 3 recent SB appearances? Pats history doesn’t compare. Undefeated, and lost! As a matter of fact what have they won since Roger took their video equipment away? Enjoy the recent success of the Pats, but please don’t try to make the Steelers sound like a flash from the past.

  34. @Noel Thomas

Actually it’s Reagan who hasn’t been alive since to last 2 SB wins. Not sure where you have been the last 8 years but it certainly wasn’t celebrating Patriot SB victories.

Let me sum it for you “exit whatever on the turnpike.”

Since 2001. Eleven division titles. Five conference titles. Three Super Bowl titles. One undefeated regular season.

As for your steelers, talk to me the next time they make the playoffs. And they, like the Patriots, lost the last time they played in the big game.

What’s telling is that a steeler fan attacks the Patriots who just clinched a playoff berth, again, while his team will likely be watching from afar, again.

It is apparent someone got bad service when traveling to Cincinnati in the past…we never get the recognition we earn. Andy had some pretty good stats this week, close to Peyton. I too wish he was more consistent, but still not bad for getting us to the playoffs the past three years. Hopefully this will be the one…

  37. So glad to FINALLY hear a voice of reason concerning the NFL power ratings!

I’ve been so tired of all of the comments on how great the Hawks are. They are a good team but NOT A GREAT ONE!

The media kept on about how unbeatable this team was ESPECIALLY at home and yet they get beat by another good team in their house!

Understandably the Broncos are hurting on defense and a lot will have to happen to repair them through our playoff run, however, having a PM with the weapons we have on offense we might be able to shore up our beleaguered defense by scoring 35 plus points!

Anyway, I hope the Broncos beat Oakland this week and earn the much needed bye week and have all the playoff games through our house!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

  38. I’m absolutely thrilled to see that other teams might be underestimating the Hawks! Just a few stats that you might want to keep in mind as the playoffs approach:
The Seahawks have never lost by more than 7 points in two years, including the preseason. They have never been blown out by anyone…home or away.
Russell Wilson has won more games in his first two years than ANY QB ever.
Seahawks special teams have given up less than 25 total punt return yards for the entire season. That’s half of the previous record.
And before some troll starts talking about PED’s or substance abuse suspensions, tell me this. Can you honestly look at players like Clay Matthews and JJ Watt and believe for even one minute that PED’s aren’t in widespread use throughout the NFL? I’ve been around a lot of football players throughout my life and it’s as common as dirt.
To all of the other teams in the NFL I say, “Go ahead and underestimate the Hawks.” They’re really hoping you will.
    Go Hawks!

Aside from the Frank Gore run and a late RW interceptions Seattle would be 14 and 1 as well.

Seattle also could have a few more losses if the ball bounced differently.

Play “what if” all you want, it isn’t what happened.

Seattle already beat down Denver’s starters in the first half of the preseason game. Denver’s chances fade in the post season as Peyton can’t seem to be able to handle cold weather “most” of the time.

Does that mean anything? Not really, but it is as good as your post. Hypothetical outcomes are silly.

Seattle has had one player suspended for PED this season. Many teams have had multiple suspensions THIS season.

Haters need to find a way to hate. The name calling, such as cheathawk, cheat carroll, Pedhawk, etc is the best that they can come up with.

  41. Lol Seahawks lose 2 times in 3 weeks including at home where you said it was impossible for them to lose, and yet you still discuss them as if there’s no way they can possibly be beaten.

Im at the point where I really hope they lose in the postseason just so I can read your excuse and what you say when you were proven wrong.

  42. Totally agree……Luke Kuechly SHOULD be the hands-down favorite for Defensive Player of the Year! The kids a BEAST!!!!!!!
