PFT’s 2013 offensive rookie of the year

Getty Images

In a year that featured few rookie quarterbacks who played much and even fewer who had much of an impact, the primary candidates for the first of the annual PFT postseason awards come from the crop of guys to whom the quarterbacks handed or threw the ball.

The invisible PFT trophy for offensive rookie of the year goes to Packers running back Eddie Lacy.

A second-rounder from Alabama who plunged in the draft due to concerns regarding his ability to stay healthy and his passion for the game, Lacy piled up 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns for the NFC North champions.  Add 257 yards receiving, and Lacy gained more than 1,400 yards from scrimmage in his first NFL season.

With only 51 yards rushing in all of September, Lacy did the bulk of his damage in three months, with four 100-yard games and a season-high 141 on 21 carries in that epic come-from-way-behind win in Dallas.

Now that the Packers have been reminded after years of a healthy Brett Favre and a mostly healthy Aaron Rodgers that quarterbacks can indeed become injured and miss multiple games in a row, they finally have a consistent threat in the running game, who could help the team grind out tough yardage in the looming postseason tournament.

Other finalists for the award were Chargers receiver Keenan Allen (1,046 receiving yards and eight touchdowns), Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell (860 rushing yards, 1,259 yards from scrimmage, eight touchdowns), Bengals running back Giovani Bernard (1,209 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns), Lions offensive lineman Larry Warford, and Vikings receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (2,020 total yards and nine total touchdowns).

Cast your own ballot in the poll below, and elaborate in the comments.

  1. If Rodgers hadn’t gotten injured Lacy’s numbers would have been half that.

Can’t believe Keenan Allen didnt get the nod, 3rd round pick blew all other wr’s away.

Lacy is the product of an injured qb. He played awesome but his skillset isnt half of what Allen’s is.

  2. Keenen Allen easily. Chargers had the best draft in 13 and are primed to make some noise in the playoffs. Que the haters….54 years and you guys still don’t wanna see us win it all. Will be that much sweeter when we do.

  3. I have to say, I honestly thought Lacy was gonna be a bust.. but he actually looks like the real deal… I however do think that patterson would have won it, if he would have started all year, kid is gonna be special.. kinda scary that “wisconsins” one profitable company finally has a legit running back.. congrats…

  4. Lets get ready for the whining lavender Larry rabble all irate over Lacy winning out of Patterson. Sucks to be you 53 year losers.

  5. Put Kenny Stills on a team without Graham/Colston/Sproles/Thomas/Moore getting most of the targets and he’s a 1,000 yard guy. Still had 641 yards and 5 TD’s while taking about 30% of offensive snaps.

  6. Lacy did turn out to be pretty good, but I’d vote for Patterson. I am, however, slightly biased — I could live with it being Lacy.

  7. Anybody that actually watched the games would realize Gio Bernard was the most electric rookie in the NFL, and the comeback games this year for the Bengals turned when they went to him over Green-Ellis to win the games.

  8. If the Vikings fired coaching staff would have put Patterson in the starting lineup before week 10, Patterson would have had 3,000 yards from scrimmage this year instead of 2,000. He’s ran the ball just 12 times for 3 TD’s and a 13 yard average. He caught 45 passes while starting only 6 games. Can’t go wrong with Lacey as he runs as hard as Earl Campbell or Adrian Peterson, but Patterson is much more explosive and will have a great impact in the future.

  9. The Packers needed Lacy and the Vikings needed Patterson. Of course, running backs are a dime a dozen and Patterson will be dominating the league for the next decade. Given the choice between the two of them, almost every team would take Patterson.

  10. Good pick….I love this kid. Patterson though will probably be the biggest stud out of the guys listed.

BTW, the Chargers are going to continue to NOT be SB champs….seriously people, just stop the insanity.

They wont win not because they had Rivers instead of Eli or Ben, they wont win because they just have never been good enough.

The Giants and Steelers both probably would have won their 2 SB’s with Rivers. The Chargers would probably not have won anything with either eli or ben.

  11. I’d have to say Patterson. Got it done returning, receiving, and running – 9 TD’s total in spite of mediocre QB play.

Eddie Bag’o’Donuts gets free double cheeseburgers on Lombardi Ave all summer, though.

  12. A no brainer of a pick. Wide receivers can trip over themselves and get 1,000 yards since defenses have been neutered. As for Bell, once again the Steelers come up short against the Packers when it matters. Convince yourselves that win two weeks ago mattered while sitting at home watching the Packers Sunday afternoon and remember who sent the Steelers home like the losers they are the last time they lucked out and made the Super Bowl.

  13. Patterson is electric. Just 100 touches…9 touchdowns. 57 touches on offense…6 touchdowns.

Every time he gets the ball, it looks like he could go all the way.

The lack of touches early in the year and bad QB’s hurt him for this award.

  14. I agree. It was one of the fails of coach Leslie Frazier. Hate Speilman all you want but he moved all his chips in on this kid, i’m talking all the picks they traded to get him. And he had it right. Leslie didn’t put him in until over half way through the season and look what he did. I kept screaming from my couch to put the kid in but they couldn’t figure it out. Saying he had to progress. He wasn’t going to progress without any experience. He finally got in and started lighting up the place. Lacey is a great player. PFT you say lacey did such a great job with missing almost all Sept. You should recognize what Patterson did with the amount of games he really played.

  15. All studs. But lacy gets my vote. He carried the packers that rotated in quarterbacks

  16. Lacy finished with the better stats, but Bell missed a quarter of the season and was only 160 yards and 3 TD’s behind him.

Have to give the crown to Lacy, but Bell in a full season probably wins it hands down.

  17. A good portion of you are misguided. If Aaron Rodgers would have played then teams would not have been able to stack the box against Lacy. It’s possible his total yardage would be less, but his overall stat line would be very impressive. “Baby Beast Mode” against a seven man front is a dangerous situation for most defenses.

  18. If Rodgers would have stayed healthy, Lacy’s numbers would have been off the chart for a rookie. Just imagine what would have happened if he had consistently faced 6 and 7 man fronts rather than 8 and 9 man fronts. He’d likely average 4.8 to 5.0 yards per carry. Then consider what would have happened if he hadn’t played on a bum ankle for the last several weeks.

Keenan Allen has played well, but he has a pro bowl QB throwing to him and a pro bowl TE in Antonio Gates drawing a lot of double teams. No way Allen would have achieved the same numbers without Gates drawing all that attention.

Lacy was the focal point of the Packers offense for eight weeks, and could not be stopped for the most part. He is the real deal and deserves ROY honors without question.

  19. Lacy, all the way, great call. Yes Allen was amazing, and Bell was pretty good, but since Rodgers was out teams were stacking 8 in the box and they couldn’t stop him. He plays injured, and has heart.

  20. I’d probably vote for Lacy, but I think the fact that you have an offensive lineman in the debate is amazing in itself. Warford would never win the award, but being mentioned for it, despite being an O-lineman shows just how good he was.

But Lacy played on a team that started Matt Flynn for a couple games…..Matt Flynn. I don’t think to many teams were worried about the dangerous passing attack of Matt Flynn. Lacy kept the boat from sinking in Green Bay until Rodgers came back.

  21. Those with a true knowledge of football would have no choice but to vote for Larry Warford.

  22. Patterson was incredibly explosive at WR and returning kicks. The only thing that slowed him down all year was the Vikings failure to get him on the field. Lacy will be good, Patterson will be great.

  23. Terrence Williams had a good year too!!, Travis Fredrick so many people gave Cowboys crap for that pick didnt hear anything bad about him all year and thats a good thing being a rookie C Olineman!!!

  24. No question it Should be Keenan Allen. Lacy did a damn good job this year but considered where he was drafted compared to Keenan. We all know PFT hates San Diego just by reading all their editors articles about how San Diego doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs. All I have to say is “ed hoculie 2008”

    Keenan Allen 2013 ROTY

  25. I’d vote for Corrddellerrellerrelle Patterson for having so many consecutive constants. No seriously, anyone who has watched a lot of Lacy. Hands down It isn’t just stats. He was the heart and soul of the Pack while Rodgers was out.

  26. What’s up with Patterson getting all those votes, its OFFENSIVE ROY!? not Special Teams ROY.

He had less than 700 total yards, and only 7 TDS its Lacy all the way.

  27. Corderelle Patterson should have got some run, he did leave the NFL kickoff returns as a rookie

  28. Sure the glamour positions are the only ones you’ll mention, even though none of the top 5 draft picks were those positions. So here’s a write-in ballot for a Top 5 pick who deserves it: Lane Johnson.

  29. Flawed thinking if you think Lacy’s numbers were inflated because Rodgers got injured. The exact opposite is true. Imagine the numbers if he wasn’t facing the stacked boxes he was after Rodgers went down.

  30. Surprised Andre Ellington isn’t a choice in the poll. Over 1000 all purpose yards and was a 6th round pick (absolute steal)

  31. Patterson has Viking fans saying, “Percy who?” Would have been ROY, if he had been a starter from the beginning of the year, which, obviously, he should have been. A bad mistake by Frazier. That couldn’t have helped when the powers that be were deciding Leslie’s fate. Can’t wait to see what Cordarrelle does for an encore next season.

  32. Paterson? LOL, the fans always get it wrong. Paterson has half the TDs as Keenan Allen, only 45 catches to Allens 71 and not even 500 yards which is less than half of what Allen has who has over 1,000.

    What a joke.

  33. Imagine Lacy’s numbers if ARod wasn’t hurt. He wouldn’t have had to face 8 man fronts every snap. Would have been huge.

And as for ROY honors – this guy single handedly put the team on his back en route to the NFC north title. Not many rookies ever get the kind of respect that Eddie earned from Packer vets this year. A true pro.

  34. Great choice, PFT. This kid has been great. He’s been playing on a bad ankle for over a month, yet still goes out there and runs over people. The best part is, he isn’t one of those chest pumping idiots who makes a spectacle of himself every time he gains a yard. Throw in that he had to work with sub par QB’s once Rodgers went down and that afforded defenses to stack theline against him, and he’s had a remarkable year. He should be the offensive rookie of the year, without a doubt.
Hey winorlose6burgh — you know what they say about if: if the Queen had stones, she’d be King. Bell is a fine RB too. But Lacy had a better year, period.

  35. This award isn’t the “If my guy didn’t get injured he’d be MVP award”. The fact of the matter is that Lacy was the Rookie o the year. Who else was more valuable to their team? The best QB in the league went down and this guy kept his team in the playoff race. Did Bell get his team in the playoffs?

  36. Lacy’s numbers would have been higher had he not gotten hurt and missed two games. He was also negatively effected by Rodgers being hurt because more teams stacked the box against him because the lack of a passing attack.

  37. Allen Rookie as offensive rookie of the year. Andre Ellington deserves honerable mention as a 6th rounder…

  38. Lacy is hands down Offensive rookie of the year.
And is the best RB in the NFC North.
AP is washed up, could not finish the season.

  39. Allen is only the 3rd rookie receiver since 2000 to accrue 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns. Much rarer to put forth a season like that at receiver than it is at running back. Heck, two rookies topped Lacy’s total just last season. It should be Allen without a doubt.

  40. I’m pretty sure we all saw who was the better back when the Steelers played GB.

  41. After hearing the bad comments on here last summer about “Cheeseburger” Lacy this is sweet justice. He certainly proved he was the dominant rookie back taken during the draft regardless of a pinned toe/foot and a weight of 240+ pounds.

  42. For those having a problem with Lacey are the same ones who predicted he would be a bust. As for others who say if their player would have played more excuse Lacey barely touched the ball in the first 3 games so he could have had a lot more yards as well. Not to mention once Rodgers went down every team knew that the Packers had to run so they stacked the box yet Lacey did well.

Gotta love the continued whining from the Viking trolls. One day maybe, just maybe, your team will be relevant and people will take your posts on here seriously. Until then you sound very bitter and need to direct your displaced anger towards your clueless franchise who just cant measure up with the big boys.

  43. I agree. Eddie lacy def is ROY. Followed by CP then Allan. I think CP is probably the superstar of the bunch when the dust settles. That guy is unbelievable with the ball in his paws. Def a huge playmaker. That said, the list is how it should be.

  44. Forget the Steelers fans-they got Bell to vote for but the Ravens and Browns fans should vote for Gio. Ravens fans hes ifgotta remind you of a younger Ray rice and the browns fans you have to support your big brother. All trash talk aside. Thanks in advance

  45. It’s amazing how “runningbacks are a dime a dozen” yet there really aren’t very many good ones.

  46. Not even a mention of Kyle Long????
He wasn’t just a great rookie, but one of the best RG’a in the entire NFL!
Eddie Lacey deserves all of his kudos, just the same. Without him, there is no playoffs for GB…

  47. The way I look at is if Patterson doesn’t return kicks he wouldn’t even be on the ballot, don’t get me wrong he is good but he didn’t have enough mind blowing stats at WR but he didn’t have a QB either, Lacy was more valuable to his team day in and day out facing 8-9 in the box and he did miss two games also so his stats would be better, Bell had QB playing at an all pro level and had a good passing game going he didn’t have to carry his team like Lacy did

  48. Matt Forte had a better season than Lacy and he didn’t even get to rush against the Bears defense twice. In fact, it was the best season of his career. Why?

You can attribute that success to Bears rookie guard Kyle Long. My vote for rookie of the year.

The Bears turned around a perennially terrible offensive line in just one season, to field one of the best offenses the franchise has seen in the modern era. They could not have done it without standout guard Kyle Long.

  49. I’ll take 6th rounder and backup to Mendenhall Andre Ellington’s 1000+ yards at 5.5 yards per carry and 9.5 yards per reception vs. high draft pick and starter Lacy’s 1300+ yards at 4.1 yards per carry and 7.3 yards per reception.

  50. Although he may not be offensive rookie of the year, Kenny Stills has a bright future with the Saints, and personally thats all that matters to me.

  51. Cordarrelle Patterson is easily the offensive rookie of the year. He didn’t start on offense basically half the year, and had horrible QBs to work with, yet still compiled some very impressive stats.

More than the stats though, he is easily the superstar in the group. Just watch him play. Every time he touches the ball, its a big play waiting to happen- and often times it does.

Big thanks to the Patriots organization for trading the pick so the Vikings could land Patterson in the draft.

  52. I understand everyone likes to look at stats, when it comes to rookie of the year. Lacy has some solid numbers.

I also think you need to look at the fact that if Lacy wasn’t playing for GB. They wouldn’t be in the playoffs. Allen have helped a lot, but Lacy had the biggest impact in the NFL this season, when it comes to offensive rookie.

  53. Lacy was the focal point of the Packers offense for eight weeks, and could not be stopped for the most part. He is the real deal and deserves ROY honors without question.

  54. Lacy got it because of consistent production, even if he had slump weeks. I do think that of all the rookies, Cordarrelle Patterson has the most upside. He started coming on about 5 weeks ago, and that hurt his chances, but in those 5 weeks, NO ONE was better.

  55. I love how you mentioned Lacy’s all purpose yards, but not Keenan Allen’s, as if his kick return yards mean less in some way…

It’s a tough choice between Lacy and Allen, but I think 1k+ yard season is WAY more difficult for a WR than a RB.

  56. I love how you mentioned Lacy’s all purpose yards, but not Keenan Allen’s, as if his kick return yards mean less in some way…

    ————
All of Lacy’s yards were on offense, which is what the award is about. Patterson’s SPECIAL TEAMS yards has nothing to do with OFFENSIVE ROY, Einstein.

  57. There should only be two guys on that list. Lacy and Allen. The rest didnt do enough and to have Warford on there is a complete joke.

If your going to include a OL…who have no shot anyways, DJ Fluker was a stud and had to play some LT this year due to injuries and did a admirable job. He destroyed people at RT. Going to be a All Pro soon.

However, Lacy and Allen should be the only candidates here and thats it.

  58. Good points, but kick returns ARE part of the game and can’t be discounted. He was hands down the best KR in the league. However lacy DID deserve to be ROY. But like i said, the superstar of the bunch will be CP. I think that’s obvious. And that’s an unbiased opinion.

  59. Patterson won’t get it, because these awards usually go to teams with better records. However, I have to admire he scored multiple TD’s returning kick offs ( one being 109 yards to tie a NFL record) and multiple TD’s rushing and receiving.

Last time that happened the ROY was Percy Harvin
along side AP and Favre. Harvin had 2,081 combined yards and was heading into the play-offs.
compared to Patterson’s 2,020 combined yards in a losing season.

  60. Patterson won’t get it, because these awards usually go to teams with better records. However, I have to admire he scored multiple TD’s returning kick offs ( one being 109 yards to tie a NFL record) and multiple TD’s rushing and receiving.

  61. A thousand plus yard season is more difficult for a Wide Receiver than it is for a Running Back.

And Keenan Allen became the #1 receiver on the team after Floyd and Alexander went down…

    A rookie.

    #13 OROTY

  62. You keenan allen jobs just don’t get it.

Teams weren’t gearing up to stop Keenan Allen. If they did, they stopped him. Not the case with Lacy.

Gates was and is the number one receiving threat on that team. Trying to tell us otherwise makes you look stupid.

  63. I’m a huge Leveon fan. But no Rookie of the year for him.

He was still the second best rookie RB in the AFCN.

On a somewhat related note, anyone know what pick we have to forfeit for Mike Tomlin stepping on the field?

  64. Bell may see mores years in the NFL thus being the better pick because Lacy is such a bruiser…a la Earl Campbell. But Eddie wins and deserves this award hands down. Don’t forget Lacy missed 2 games and shared the backfield with Starks most of the season. Flynn and the Packers don’t get those two wins and playoffs without him.

  65. Eddie Lacy is a very solid running back. He’s hard to bring down, has good vision, picks up the blitz relatively well, not much more you could wish for in a rookie.

But I do think he’s been overhyped by the media. He has a lot of yards but he also has a lot of carries.

He averages 4.1 YPC (24th in the league). On top of that, Lacy rarely ran against stacked boxes because opposing defenses had to respect the Pack’s passing attack.

He seems to be a current and future top-10 back and is deserving of ROY. But his being voted onto the second team All-Pro over the likes DeMarco Murray, Matt Forte, Alfred Morris, Ryan Matthews, and Marshawn Lynch – all of whom had more yards (except DMarco Murray with ~50 less) and higher YPCs – seems to be a product of the shinier coin rather than the one with more value.
