We’ve been learning some of the names of the coaches on the Redskins’ radar for their head coaching vacancy, but owner Dan Snyder’s history of big-name hires has kept people wondering if things could head in that direction again.
One of those big names is former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, but General Manager Bruce Allen said during a Thursday interview with Mark Maske of the Washington Post that the team has not contacted Cowher. In December there was a report that Cowher was not interested in giving up his television gig for a return to coaching in 2014.
Allen wouldn’t comment when asked about whether he’s spoken to another Super Bowl winner now in the television game. Jon Gruden and Allen worked together in Tampa Bay and Gruden said this week that he didn’t want to be considered for any openings. Allen also wouldn’t say whether any college coaches were under consideration for the job.
“I’m not going to say because then, again, we would be getting into names and I’m not going to do that,” Allen said.
Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell are other names that have been linked to the Redskins since they fired Mike Shanahan.
