House nearly blocked kick, but he was offside

Getty Images

After 49ers kicker Phil Dawson nailed a game-winning field goal at Lambeau Field, FOX eventually focused on a replay that showed the ball pass through the arms of Packers cornerback Davon House, who had come around the edge for the block.

FOX didn’t point out that, if House had blocked the kick, the 49ers would have gotten another chance, five yards closer.

House was offside.  The play-by-play at NFL.com reveals the penalty.  While the game broadcast made no mention of a flag, referee Ed Hochuli can be heard during the post-kick celebration saying “touchdown” before correcting himself and declaring that a field goal had been scored.

Apparently, Hochuli’s microphone wasn’t engaged for the beginning of his distinctly non-Hochulian explanation of the penalty and the outcome.

That should actually improve the mood of any Packers fans who are feeling tantalized by the near-miss.  Even if House had blocked the kick, Dawson would have gotten the same Mulligan that Ryan Succop should have gotten last Sunday against the Chargers.

  1. Is there a rule that allows only the Packers offensive line and DBs to hold whenever they want? If it wasn’t for all the missed and very obvious holds all game, it would have been a Niner blowout. I’m just glad the much better team won.

  2. Congrats to both teams but I think this game is indicative of the holes the Green Bay team has. Their QB protection has been poor since early last season and their inability to create a sustained rush without bringing extra guys hurts their ability to stop good teams. SF is a good team.

  3. If he blocked it it probably wouldn’t have been called offside. You didn’t know that calls aren’t made against the Pack? The Niners beat them and the refs tonight.

Where was this whining about holding talk when Carlos Rogers was busy hugging Jordy Nelson in those previous games?

  5. I don’t know who has the meanest fans, the Raiders or the Niners. The Bay Area must be a scary place.

  6. Eagles fan. But am happy as all the games were good this weekend. BCS tomorrow night. Rather have great games than 4 routs with my team winning.

Stat line for Kaep when he played Carolina in SF:

    PASSING: 11/22, 91 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT, RTG 42.0
    RUNNING: 4 car, 16 yds, 0 T

    —————————————————–

Already worried and now looking for something positive for next week. Will be a much improved Kap playing next week with different results. Niner’s have all of their offensive threats and will be a different team than the first game.

  8. Those refs eyesight must have been affected by the cold. Packers got away with holding non-calls, pass interference non calls..offsides non calls…wow.

  9. The stat that Packers fans really hate:

AARON RODGERS has NEVER lead a 4th Quarter Comeback win against a winning team. NEVER. The stat is like 0 for 20.

Don’t know how these analysts and sportswriters can continue to call Rodgers ‘The Best QB in Football’ with a stat like that. (not saying it was his fault today, but, that is an incredible stat)

  10. Lets compare this offseason to the last 2: Injury prone roster, bad tackling, bad coverage schemes, Dom Capers. Yep, same as it ever was in Green Bay.

  11. Niners fan here. Awesome job by the Packers battling all the injuries for a hard fought game. The amount of Seahawks & Vikings fans on these postgame articles is pathetic and insecure.

  12. ShAaron Rogers is on the decline. Couple of years and he’ll be playing for Minnesota.

Sure. Whatever makes you sleep easier at night. Scared of the niners coming in to Clink?

  14. Great year Packers. Add a few playmakers on defense, a new tight end, get Bulaga, Hayward, Clay, Lacy, Sherrod back and they will be ready to compete next year. Packers are looking up. I hope the Seahawks play the 49ers for NFC this year. Both those teams remain loaded with young high draft picks earned through years of poor performance and their talented quarterbacks are the two lowest paid starters in the NFL. Will be interesting to see if those franchises can stay competitive when they have to pay their franchise players competitive salaries. As a Wisconsinite, Im rooting for Russell Wilson this year. Go Packers, Go Hawks.

  15. Niners won….stop making excuses. Plenty of flags should have been thrown but the refs let them play the game….first time in NFL history.

  16. So much for all the BS weather talk!!!! It wasn’t even that bad there. I’m sure there will be plenty of GB fans coming up with excuses on this one. Plain and simple= Since the Vikings won in 2004 @ GB, Lambeau just isn’t he same!!!!

  17. Wasn’t the kick it was the sure pick six that Hyde (33) dropped that would have made Kapernick the goat and the Packers winners. Ah, but such is fate. Good game.

  18. Colin Kaepernick = THE Game Manager.

That’s a lousy Green Bay defense even when it’s healthy. Carolina’s gotta be licking their chops right now.

  19. Aaron Rodgers only home playoff win so far has come against a Joe Webb led Vikings team.

    ‘Nuff said.

    ———————————

Not really sure that’s enough said when he has a Super Bowl under his belt thanks to three impressive road wins and a neutral site win in that postseason. I’m no GB fan, but if you’re clinging to a mediocre home playoff record as some sort of knock against Rodgers, well, keep on grasping for those straws I guess.

  20. 9ers were the better team today, but will face a far superior defense in Carolina next week!

  21. You guys are pathetic with the officals always saying the packers got away with everything ..

James Jones Twice had arms pinned behind his back no calls

Jordy Nelson got mugged to many times to count

Get a life viking trolls and detroit trolls you couldn’t even make it to the playoffs in a crappy division .. Viking and lions fans you play in domes you have no voice in the nfl..

The refs let both teams play …

  22. Watch the replay in slow motion. He got a great jump on the snap but was clearly onside.

  23. This just proves to me that the Packers needed help from the officials all season long – even in this game – to try to win. In the end, the better team won without assistance of any sort.

  24. I like seeing all the comments here on the pack getting away with so many penalty non calls. I’m glad the NFL fan-world is taking notice of something we in the NFCN have complained about forever!

  25. So this is what Viking fans do on payoff weekends.

I’m sorry did I break your concentration?

  27. Hey nickynick if you have ever been on here you would see how much the packers troll us. That is the only reason why I make fun of your team. If you fans respected us I would once again respect the packers.

  28. Bottom line is that the Packers were exposed for exactly what they are. A terrible team that was the best of the worst in a weak division. They had no business in the playoffs. Their “fans” can whine and make excuses all they want, but without major help from the officials, this wasn’t even a game.

  29. A few more hours of hearing packer fans whine and cry about being “booted” out of the post-season. Then 6 months of hearing them brag about “13 world championships” against the Duluth eskimos, and springfield mud hens, and flint firefighters. And then a new season of the packers and zebras against 31 other teams!

  30. Love the comments from the cynical bitter Vikings fans. You do know that your team will be playing outdoors in a stadium that holds 50k fans for the next two years. Dont worry though, when the temps fall below 30, you can stay at home and comment here on PFT about how much you hate Packer fans or denigrate Aaron Rodgers by calling him Erin and we will take over your stadium to watch the Packers beat the crap out of the Vikings like they do year after year after year.

  31. House almost blocked a kick? So what. He didn’t. kapernick almost ran for a touchdown, Rodgers almost threw for another touchdown, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Football is full of almosts. How is this news?

  32. Add that to the other non-calls against the Packers likely the blatant holding in the endzone that cost Crabtree a TD, plus Tramon’s lowering his helmet in the open field to hit Koepernick on the INT return.

Packers and Peyton will ALWAYS get favorable ref calls unless you have replacement refs (since they aren’t on NFL payroll-wink-wink)

  33. Remember Niners didn’t have Crabtree and V. Davis and McDonald for almost all of that Carolina game. Plus playoffs means anything goes… Past means nothing.

I don’t know what you were watching, but he single-handedly kept them in that game, just like he did the week before against CHI. The guy is amazing and while it’s fine to dislike him, he’s earned your respect.

  37. The packers dynasty is slowly dying. They have no team around them because they paid aaron rodgers to much

  38. I love how all the 9ers fans are saying that they can beat the panthers and seahawks because they had players injured that didn’t play in those games.

But GB sucks even though they didn’t have Bulaga all year, Mathews, Finely, Shields, Heyward, neil for this game.

    It happpened last week.
The Bears were 8-7 at the time.

    There.

After repeating the same comment repeatedly in multiple threads you are a confirmed 2 bit troll. It makes you pathetic. The only way out is to stop trolling. Whining doesn’t help your case. And trolling to combat trolls is the weakest troll of all.

  45. Having Lacy instead of Bell finally came back to haunt the Pack. Le’Veon would’ve carried that team on his back for the W.

  46. Lol @ the Packers getting non-calls. Granted, I saw a few holding calls missed on the Packers, and a DPI non-call.

I also saw plenty of holding on the niners (though less than the Packers, that is granted). To make up for that fact, however, was the laughably regularity with which the niners secondary held and interfered on the back end. That enormous non-call DPI on Jordy Nelson deep in niners territory changes the entire game.

There were missed calls on both sides.

  47. Well let me jump on the band wagon here.
I am not a fan of either team. I don’t like or dislike them one way or another just a fan of football. With that said, I can’t say that I have ever seen a worst officiating game ever. The 9ers deserve the win and it shouldn’t have been close the packers actually through an arm around a rushers neck crab his jersey and pulled a pass rusher off of Roders to avoid a sack and eventually score their 2nd TD. The y were mugging the 49ers receivers all game. This was a pathetic officiating crew I have ever seen in the playoffs. The NFL needs and should review this game and suspend/fine this crew for all the blatant missed calls mostly against the 49ers. For that much this seasons officiating has been worst the the replacement refs. NFL figure it out it’s getting really bad

If Seattle did not have a team, SF would be my choice.
I do need to point out a few things about the 49ers that the fans are tending to gloss over.
Against the Seahawks (in SF) they won primarily due to a F. Gore run in the last few minutes.
Against Atlanta San Fran was down 10- 3 at halftime.
Against AZ they win on a late FG.
Now against the Packers they win on a late FG.
Earlier in the Season the 9er fans were complaining about Seattle winning close games.
Not sure how what 9ers are doing lately is any different.

Not a Packers or Rodgers fan. Good teams usually don’t have many 4th quarter comeback victories because they’re usually ahead by the 4th quarter.

  56. Let’s not forget the 2 calls that the NFL admitted they made a mistake in the Viking, Packer game that took 2 TDs away from the Vikings. With that loss, GB would have never made the playoffs . There will always be a ASTERISK !!!

    =================================
He didn’t say “Touchdown”, why would he say “Touchdown”? He said “first down” because the penalty would have given them a first down with 3 seconds left in the game.

Penalty declined, FG good. Game over.

  58. Bottom line the Packers played great despite some injuries, but the better team advanced.

I was disturbed to see Gb get away with a fumble on the first possession and so many way too obvious holds on the offensive line and some tackles of Crabtree in the 1st, prior to the ball arriving. The worst of all was the stranglehold from behind on Ray McDonald while he appeared to have Rogers. The lineman kept strangling him, had no business touching him when he was behind the defender.Meanwhile Rogers escapes and makes a great throw to Cobb.

All these plays felt like the league manufacturing a close game, and keeping Rogers safe from getting sacked every other play.

Not to complain just pointing out some baffling plays. Regardless I thought GB had a lot of fight despite the huge mismatch in the trenches.

  59. @usdcoyotesfan
I thought that was a lively story, we are talking about today’s game not the Packets history. The officials were horrible tonight not saying they were bias but most of the bad non calls benefited the Packers. One in which led to the packers 2nd TD.

Its not just the cold. This is an EVERY week occurrence in the NFC north games. You are never just playing the team, you always have to overcome their 7 friends in stripes the bring with them.

They got to the playoffs with some SERIOUS help from the officials in the bears game the week before. 4’th and 1..snap it 2 seconds after the clock hits zero…no flag.

  62. Look at the names across the board on the Packers line. They consistently ignore improving it because they know they can get by throwing out garbage because the refs will not allow Aaron Rodgers to be pummeled, its bad for the business.

I’m sorry but the fact that line contained the Niners pass rush as much as they did is a sign of blatant cheating.

But alas, I kinda liked watching a game that wasn’t dominated by flags after every play and enjoyed watching this one.

  63. db105 wrote: ” Good teams usually don’t have many 4th quarter comeback victories because they’re usually ahead by the 4th quarter.”

Ok, ‘splain how Tom Brady, Drew Brees & Peyton Manning (5 Super Bowl wins) have lots of 4th Quarter comebacks against winning teams? Haven’t they been on “Good teams” as well as Rodgers? Of course, they have.

You can try and change the subject all you want, but, Rodgers has had 20 or so of these opportunities and has a big fat Goose Egg to show for it. ZERO. NADA. ZILCH. And, 20 games is more than a full NFL season worth of games – hardly a tiny sample. Face it, he’s not a great come for behind QB. He’s a classic front-runner. Rodgers stats even against LOSING teams is pretty bad when it comes to 4th Quarter comebacks.

EVERY Hall of Fame QB has found themselves behind in the 4th quarter of games against winners. The greatest win their share of them. Rodgers is 0 for his career.

  64. So with three of four visiting teams winning (and the fourth losing by a point) no one should have any problem with seeding playoffs since it is apparent that there is no home field advantage. Let the division winners in and seed ’em all.

  65. The Packers should have been as I predicted before the season 6-10. I stopped having a favorite team after 40 horrid years with the Lions. I like to just analize teams now.

If the Lions, Vikes and Bears would have played even half way decent football, the Pack would have been out of it three or four weeks ago.

Yes they lost Rogers but Rogers held onto the ball for a long time for the perfect pass and was slammed to the ground for it. Blame Rogers.

This is one of the worst coached and managed teams in football. Ted T is trying to screw the fans by playing cheap ball. He has them thinking draft and development is our approach and they are buying that crap. No free agents because they costs money. Fools

When I said “see you next year”, I should’ve known that meant “in a few hours.” An 8-7-1 team shouldn’t be in the playoffs, you say? If the Cardinals don’t like missing the playoffs to a team with a worse record because of where the 2 teams stand in their respective divisions, maybe they should’ve thought of that in 2009 when they got a home playoff game against the Packers even though GB had a better record.

    Karma.

    1. The NFL also said the Fail Mary was legit, so that shows you what they think of the Packers.

    2. The same year as the game you mentioned: In the Packers’ first game against Chicago, a GB interception was wiped out by a defensive pass interference that should’ve been on the offense. That allowed the Bears to kick the winning FG. So the Packers should’ve swept the Bears and won the division that year.

Funny how people create an uproar when there’s a bad call in favor of the Packers but thumb down when somebody points out refs’ mistakes against them.

  69. I’ve been a Packer fan since 1960. People who complain about officials are wasting their time and are usually being ridiculous about it. Let’s face it, the officials could call holding on “O” linemen on every on every team on every play. Sure — there are horrible calls in every game (for those who think the Packers get preferential treatment, I ask them to go back and watch that final play in the Packers/Seahawks game last year. That was easily the worst call in the history of the sport, but it was made and the NFL backed the phony refs who made it).
I saw holding and interference in that game last night that was not called, for both teams. I was glad about that. For once, the officials let both teams play. The weather was brutal enough without constant stoppage for penalties. The better team won last night, so hats off to the Niners. Given the Packers’ situation on defense, I was pleasantly surprised the game was as close as it was.
I’ll be rooting for the Panthers against the Niners and whomever else they play the rest of the way. I am not fond of Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, or Sean Peyton. So, gooo Panthers!

  70. The 8-7-1 Packers never should have been in the playoffs in the first place, let alone hosting a playoff game. The NFL needs to change its ridiculous playoff format ASAP

  71. Even if House had blocked the kick, Dawson would have gotten the same Mulligan that Ryan Succop should have gotten last Sunday against the Chargers.

Is there a rule that allows only the Packers offensive line and DBs to hold whenever they want?

    ——————————————

This has been going on for over a decade now.

Not a Packers or Rodgers fan. Good teams usually don’t have many 4th quarter comeback victories because they’re usually ahead by the 4th quarter.

    ————————————————

While it sounds good, this just isn’t factually true.

Joe Montana: 31 4th Qtr comebacks, 35 game winning drives

John Elway: 35 4th Qtr comebacks, 46 game winning drives

    Johnny Unitas: 35 & 40

    Dan Marino: 35 & 51

    Tom Brady: 31 & 42

    Peyton Manning: 40 & 51

  74. Just a bit of advice, don’t argue with idiots (Viking trolls), after awhile, nobody will be able to tell which one is which.

The Packers played hard yesterday but failed to make the big play in the big spot. But Congrats to the 49ers who happen to make big plays in big spots.

Unlike the Vikings who never made enough big plays in big spots so that at the end of 53 years, the trophy case is as empty as their heads.

  75. House was not offside. The officiating yesterday was 100% bias towards the 49ers. How many times did they get away with Pass Interference? How many times did they get away with late hits out of bounds or after the whistle? 49ers are a dirty team that didn’t deserve to win. Just more of Goodell’s Anti-Packer Bigotry extending to the officials.
