ProFootballTalk: 49ers will have to pay up

The guys from ProFootballTalk discuss how Colin Kaepernick, Aldon Smith and Michael Crabtree will cost the 49ers a pretty penny to keep them in the Bay Area. On top of those three key players, Jim Harbaugh will also be looking to get paid this offseason.

  1. Crabs will be tough to resign as he will want to break the bank. They have stayed out of cap trouble so far and already extended many core players, I trust they will keep who they need to.

  2. The good news is that all three players are signed through next year. Bold in and Dawson are likely only ones we will need to extend this year.

  3. Kap has a contract that runs through 2014, so they don’t have to negotiate right away. Crab will cost them some money, but probably won’t be anywhere near what a top qb will get. Aldon Smith will cost them some money, but again, nothing they cannot handle. Harbaugh’s contract does not count against the salary cap, so paying him won’t affect the roster.

  4. jayniner, Phil Dawson was signed to a 2-year contract. They will only keep Boldin if he accepts a lower payday but if not, he’s likely gone along with Mario Manningham whom was a bust. Quinton Patton will likely be the #2 next year unless Baldwin breaks out in pre-season next year. They will probably draft 1 or 2 wr’s in this years draft. They will franchise Crabtree and try to workout a long term deal. I believe the 49ers have the advantage in signing Aldon long term because of his off-field stuff. I think it won’t be too hard to re-sign Kaep, and Harbaugh.

  5. Struggling most of his first full season won’t help Kaep break the bank. He’s signed til next year anyway. Aldon Smith is lucky he’s not in jail. If he can go an entire year without stabbing himself or firing a gun in the street, then we’ll talk. Crab, well even after his holdout his rookie season, he’s proven he actually deserves to get paid. He’s pretty damn good.

And let’s not forget that it’s the 49ers defense that makes this offense look half decent, so if you’re going to pay anyone, lock those guys in first.

  6. They will only keep Boldin if he accepts a lower payday. I wonder where I heard that before. I think the 49ers should trade him back to the Ravens for a 7th round pick.

Obviously you do if you’re taking the time out of your day to visit & comment on a 49ers post. Any who, Aldon smith has the lest leverage for a new contract. not only does he have another year left, but keep in my that while he was on leave earlier this year SF continued to pay him.
