Sam Shields has possible MCL injury, pending MRI

When Packers cornerback Sam Shields made an early exit from Sunday’s playoff game and didn’t return due to a knee injury, it hurt the team’s chances to beat the 49ers.

Based on the extent of the injury, it could end up hurting his shot at free agency.

Per a league source, it’s currently believed Shields has a strained MCL.  The official diagnosis will come from an MRI evaluation.

That’s good news for Shields, assuming the injury doesn’t require surgery.  For low-to-mid-grade MCL injuries, the rope-like ligament heals itself with rest.

A fourth-year veteran, Shields will become an unrestricted free agent on March 11.  Through March 8, the Packers have exclusive negotiating rights with Shields.

  1. Meanwhile the Vikings dynasty is beginning.

    The Packers run is over.

With the signing of Jay Cutler, the Bears told us the Bears dynasty is beginning. You have to fight this out between the 2 of you. Two dynasties, one division, doesn’t work, boys.

  2. Every team in the division has a “Franchise” quarterback except the Vikings.

There not even on the way to being on the way of having a dynasty.

Sorry Viking fans, speak with your head not you heart.

  3. I was wondering who would be the first idiot to post the demise of the the Pack, I guess we have a winner.

The Vikings Dynasty has been beginning since 1961. When does it actually arrive?

When they don’t fill this new stadium…and the 20 year obligation the city will have with it before the Vikes move on in or around 2036 when they move elsewhere. I’d say somewhere around 2040.

His Vikings team is on the ropes year in and year out and as long as Spielman is there, it will remain that way. Peterson is on his last few legs and has maybe 2 or 3 years left in the tank, if he doesn’t hold out and ask for a trade sooner. The only play maker they’ll have next year is Patterson, and he’ll get creamed playing both WR and KR/PR.

Long story, shorter. Never….they’re called the hapless Vikings for a reason. What top notch GM or HC would want to go to that h*ll hole? Darell Bevell is going to come in and turn them into a 7 win team instead of a 5 win team. Can’t wait.

  5. Too many injuries for the Packers this season. They will be back next year.

thepftpoet: go back under your bridge you troll. All your comments make no sense and your pathetic franchise will never win a super bowl in your life time. have a nice life.

  6. And Viking fans think that packer fans are annoying. People like thepftpoet are the reason why nobody outside of Minnesota and the Dakota states like the Vikings. Ignorant fans.

  7. No problem. He’ll be back. He is a key member of this defense and will be for many years to come.

  8. He has 6 months to heal up from it. If he needs surgery, he might be out most or all of next season.

The Packers need taller DBs. these guys they have now are 5’9″ to 5’11”. Seattle has set the blueprint for DBs. Their guys are tall.

A decent pass rush in Green Bay would help the DBs out as well. Not many DBs can cover a guy for 8 or 10 seconds. Most DBs only have to cover for 5 or 6 seconds because their teams have end rushers who can get to the QB. Green Bay needs a couple of good DEs and one of them better be able to get into the backfield.

Green Bay should draft like this.

    1 – DE
    2 – OL
    3 – DE
    4 – DE
    5 – DE
    6 – DE
    7 – DE

Then, if they have any other picks, draft safties.

  9. Packers are injury-prone every year; don’t have the defense to win playoff games; and now are looking at Rodgers beginning the downside of his career.

Packers also have salary-cap issues that will prevent them from ever building much of a supporting cast for Rodgers.

Packers have basically been a one-and-done playoff team for a few years now, and will be lucky to continue that way in the future.

Lol get used to it Packers fans. Every time the Pats lose a game, or a player of note goes to a different team, or gets injured, the Pats are finished and going to go 0-16 for the next 5 years.

Learning to thrive on their hate and ignorance will serve you well.

  11. As a GB fan, I can accept the fact that GB’s dynasty ended when Greg Jennings signed with the Vikings. The sooner other Packers fans join me in acknowledging this fact, the better off we will all be while watching the 12-4 Vikes take the North next year. The constant hazing and smack talk that Viking’s fans give Packers fans on this board is, quite frankly, hurtful.

  12. Good Reporting Florio ! The Packers never give any injury information. Ever. And that upsets me. Why ? We care. We want to know. But, when asked at a press conference, ask about a player, the team just slips by the question. Always. Good reporting. Thank you.
