When Packers cornerback Sam Shields made an early exit from Sunday’s playoff game and didn’t return due to a knee injury, it hurt the team’s chances to beat the 49ers.
Based on the extent of the injury, it could end up hurting his shot at free agency.
Per a league source, it’s currently believed Shields has a strained MCL. The official diagnosis will come from an MRI evaluation.
That’s good news for Shields, assuming the injury doesn’t require surgery. For low-to-mid-grade MCL injuries, the rope-like ligament heals itself with rest.
A fourth-year veteran, Shields will become an unrestricted free agent on March 11. Through March 8, the Packers have exclusive negotiating rights with Shields.
