When the Redskins fired Mike Shanahan as head coach, they also relieved eight of Shanahan’s assistants of their duties.
Now that Jay Gruden has been hired as the team’s new head coach, they’ve parted ways with two others. Chris Russell of ESPN 980 reports that running backs coach/assistant head coach Bobby Turner and assistant special teams/defensive backs coach Richard Hightower will not be part of Gruden’s staff.
Turner spent 15 seasons as the running backs coach in Denver and stayed with the Broncos for a year after Shanahan was replaced by Josh McDaniels before heading to Washington. Sixteen different backs had 100-yard games and six backs had 1,000-yard seasons for the Broncos under Turner. Alfred Morris hit 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons while Morris, Roy Helu and Evan Royster each cracked 100 yards in games to add to Turner’s career totals on those fronts.
Hightower spent fourth years on the Redskins staff and added the defensive back duties to his special teams work in 2012. The team fired special teams coach Keith Burns after letting Shanahan go, but defensive backs coach Raheem Morris’ future with the team remains undetermined.
