Niners haven’t heard from NFL yet about hit on Jeremy Lane

During the second quarter of Sunday’s NFC title game, Seahawks gunner Jeremy Lane appeared to take an out-of-bounds hit from someone on the 49ers sideline while trying to cover a punt.

If the NFL will be investigating the situation, the investigation hasn’t commenced.

“We have not been contacted by the League on this matter, but will cooperate fully with any questions they may have,” 49ers spokesman Bob Lange told PFT.

The hit occurred while the still-unidentified person stood on the yellow line that borders the thick sideline stripe.

Some have speculated that the person applying the hit was linebacker Nick Moody or defensive tackle Quinton Dial, both of whom were inactive on Sunday.  Per a league source, it was neither Moody nor Dial.

No flag was thrown on the play, and Lane bounced right up and kept going in an attempt to cover the punt.

  1. I know there is talk of blown calls and the “what ifs” in this game.

On this particular play the punt returner muffed the punt and got taken out of play by Lockette. Now if Lane wasn’t given the shoulder or elbow by this 49er personnel or inactive player on the sidelines could he have recovered that fumble on the 49ers 15 as the ball was free?

This is worse than the Tomlin situation where he made no contact. There are clips out there breaking down the hit. I have no doubt there will be big fine illegal play, it is clearly cheating.

  2. That punt was muffed. As a gunner, I have to think Lane would have had a chance to recover it if not knocked down.

A big fine would seem appropriate.

  3. At first it appeared like it was a coach that nearly clotheslined the guy. Of course they did not replay it 1000 times like they did with Tomlin. Whoever it was should be fined at least $100,000 and there should be a late draft pick taken away as well. If you are going to set an example with Tomlin, then act on it.

  4. Why is this being investigated? The gunner was well out of bounds, beyond the yellow line in fact. If you are that far out of bounds, that it is too bad if he ran into someone.

  5. As an unprotected player (no pads), I’d brace my self for protection. Though it may look like a hit, to me the gunner came straight into him. If you can’t move, your going to protect yourself. And if you 100lbs bigger, of course the lighter guys going to look like he took a shot.

  6. Why are gunners allowed to run out of bounds?
Out of bounds should be just that “OUT OF BOUNDS”. To me that is cheating, like playing a golf ball from Out Of Bounds.

  7. Better yet, how much should the Crabtree fine be for jamming his hand into Sherman’s face when Sherman offered him a gentleman’s handshake, a congratulations at the end of the game.

  8. The consensus among Bay Area beat writers is that it was an assistant strength and conditioning coach. First, the guy (obstacle) was a step or two inside the white boundary so he was a good three yards off the field of play, and two don’t let yourself get taken into the opposing bench Mr. Lane and you won’t be colliding with people.

  9. Quick!Let’s think of something to talk about that will sound like the Niners didn’t get cheated once again.

  10. 1. Don’t hide by running down the sidelines
    2. The guy is clearly pulling back, not moving forward. Lane ran into him, not the other way around.

  11. So, using the same “logic” as some of the 49er apologist, “If you don’t want to have popcorn thrown on you, don’t fake a minor knee injury.”

  12. There are only so many non-active players allowed to wear 49ers gear on the 49ers sideline. Even fewer built like that dude, it’s pretty surprising that he hasn’t been identified yet. Huge fine coming his way I’d hope.

  13. I can’t believe I am by saying this but if Tomlin got fined and the Steelers got in trouble for what he did then I want to see the 49ers get 5 times the penalty Tomlin did.

  14. He’s been identified by Bay Area beat writers as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Not surprising he’s a big dude. And I doubt the league will mete out a huge fine a guy making chump change relatively speaking. The team might get fined . . . might. I doubt it.

  15. sure ignore the most important fixed call of the game; a roughing the kicker penalty first down that conveniently was changed to “running into -kicker”

shutup shehawk fans. the refs got u in the SB but they will fix it for manning who they love more

    Niners are the best team

  16. like harbaugh said, just play by the rules. That includes “the greatest hands ever in the history of the nfl”

  17. The niners are just a cheap shot kind of team. Yes Seattle may get verbal but they are NOT the kind of team to clothes line a guy out of bounds. The hatered for the niner organization grow…

  18. Hawks fan here. Lets not stoop to the lever of the Whiners over this. Let the NFL handle it if they desire. We won, we’re moving on to the big show and playing, whiners are watching from home.

  19. Do you guys ever stop crying? I can imagine the hurt when Manning shreds you. Lockette shoulda been flagged anyway.. Negating the POTENTIAL lane recovery. You won the game get over it and move on

  20. What about Sherman’s post game fine??
Dude is a joke. Stay trashy, Sherman. What’s Richard mean again??

The NFL already wants manning to get another ring, but Sherman’s post game comment most definitely assured that the NFL is going to rig this one for manning.

How many kids sat there and watched Sherman make an arrogant bafoon out of himself??

The league has an image to protect. And Sherman just tainted it and practically handed manning his second ring.

  21. Odd how no flag makes all right here yet Tomlin was fined and draft choice taken away. this is not the first time for sideline problem in Hairbaughville. he was flagged for out on field. Come on Gödel you fine one team and then let another slide.

  22. We should expect comments like these from Seahawks fans. My guess is 95% of people posting have never been to a game, 75% ne’er watch football, and few understand the rules. Yet, to hear them speak Century Link has been around since the 1800’s and hold a quarter million season ticket holders. The rules state that if blocked out of bounds, it’s the gunners responsibility to get back on the field immediately, not 1 mention that anyone has to make a clear path for him. If the NFL is investigating, it just may be to fine Lane for hitting someone on the sidelines, the N.O. gunner got flagged and fined for hitting someone on the Browns sideline this year. Lane is a 200 lb guy RUNNING at near full speed in football pads and helmet and an unprotected bystander can take him out? Seahawks have big problems with their athletes then… Looks like Lane was knocked off balance by the block, stumbled along the sideline, hit a bystander, and slipped on the sticks. The chain gang is a Seahawks employee, he didn’t seem affected by it, Lane didnt ask for a flag at any point.
Seahawks and Seahawks fans are a second rate team from a second tier city – what else would you expect?
    Born and raised in Seattle.

  23. Look at this toolbag ranting above me… The only one I see ranting about CenturyLinke being around for 1800 years is you kid, LOL. I would also say by reading your comment, Hawk fans know a lot more about football, and the rules than you… The bottom line is, an inactive 49 er player tried to cheat, and help his team out, and you losers still lost. The funniest part is watching a clown like you make an excuse about it, ROLMFAO

  24. I love how all the 49ers fans are crying about the refs but will be the first come to their defense when calls go their way and help them win games. Did some of the calls help us? Sure, but us know what helped more? Kaep throwing 2 interceptions and and getting strip sacked. Or how about your RB’s getting a total of what 38 yards? How about your number 4 rush defense giving up over 100 yards to Lynch or your safetys missing crucial plays when it counted most. Don’t want bad calls to affect the game? Maybe don’t leave the game close enough for them to matter.

  25. Every NFL teams’ fans bitch about bad calls that don’t help their team but when they do help it’s a good call! Just like the beginning of last season when the NFL was using replacement refs and the Packers played the Seahawks. That very last play where Wilson threw to Tate and he pushed off the defender, every Packer fan and player thought there should have been a flag they even pouted off the field before the extra point was kicked. After the game both Tate and Wilson said it was the right call but I suspect they would have cried just like the Packers did if the roles were reversed! Just like EVERYBODY does when they feel their team got screwed by the refs!

  26. Thanks for proving my point tobis81.
If I’m wrong – tell me where – Seahawks fans have crawled out of the woodwork here – there has been support in previous years, but now everyone says they’ve been season ticket holders – yet the team almost left in 81, 89, and 96. Or tell me I’m wrong about the rules again – maybe you should look them up, the fact is I’m correct – the NFL will do nothing because nothing happened.
It seems to me Seahawk fans are the ones crying here – the mean 49ers cheated!! boo hoo… The Seahawks have shown a pattern of institutionalized “cheating” by the repeated failing of NFL drug policy – big deal, who cares? The 49ers lost, it’s a football game – it’s a shame you hang your civic pride on that.
You should move out of your moms basement – you’ll gain experiences and figure out to be a useful member of the community.

  27. Don’t see many 49ers fans complaining about all the calls and non calls going their way in the Carolina game. I remember most of them saying that you should not leave it so that a bad call or two decides the game. Yet they complain about the refs in this game.

There were not that bad of calls. And all the calls did not affect the game really, with maybe the exception of the running into the punter.

The fumble that Bowman got that was given to Seattle was given to SF one play later with better field position.

The non facemask on this play did not change anything except for 15 yards. Nothing more than them missing a hold on a lineman or something.

They could have easily thrown a flag on the hit Lane received out of bounds, and it would have been offsetting.

So quit your bitchen, the ref errors were not game changers.

  28. the refs gave us two possessions in a row that weren’t ours, but we are mad as heck that our gunner had to endure a nasty collision when he didn’t run back inbounds immediately. and then lockette ripped james helmet off by his facemask, but we are so incensed about the emotional damage our gunner had to endure!

  29. …and Rodney King shoulda never assaulted that police officer’s night stick with his face!!
