Elway thinks those doubting Manning’s legacy are reaching

As a quarterback who excelled for years before winning his first Super Bowl, Broncos executive John Elway understands the pressure on his current quarterback.

But he said Tuesday he thinks those wondering about Manning’s legacy — and whether it would be impacted by not winning another ring — are reaching for something to talk about.

“I think that when people say that, they’re looking for something,” Elway said. “Because he had such a tremendous year, I mean, what else are you going to talk about Peyton Manning that’s negative other than, ‘Okay, we’ve got to go to his legacy?’

“So I don’t think this game, one way or the other, affects his legacy the way that he has played. So he’s going to be one of the all-time greats no matter what, and this will definitely help [the argument against that] if we lose it, but the bottom line, this year that he has had – legacies don’t get great until you’re done. That’s when people start talking.”

Of course, when Elway was being discussed in such terms, there was no Twitter, no 24-hour news cycles. Legacies developed over time, and in time, Manning’s greatness should shine through regardless what happens Sunday.

  1. Greatest Playoff QB of all time=Joe “Montana” Flacco

Worst Playoff QB of all time=Peyton Manning

Stats do not lie, I have spoken.

  2. Peyton shouldn’t even be in the discussion of the best QB ever until he can prove that he can beat a quality team.. I read an interesting article on bleacher report showing Mannings level of competition this year or lack there of.. 24.241 is the average ranking of the Broncos opponents this year.. So can Peyton pad his stats like a champ? Sure but when playing quality teams he’s pretty average.

  3. Peyton is great but he doesn’t need Elway to say one word about credit or legacy.

Mr Elway pales greatly to Peyton as John Elway was a huge baby and refused to play for The Colts. Peyton Never Complained about where he was chosen to play.

  4. John Elway’s stats were Christian Ponder-like the first half of his career. He was a tremendous disappointment. Then he won two Super Bowls late in his career and he’s widely considered one of the all-time greats. Peyton’s problem is he won his Super Bowl in the middle of his career, so people complain that he hasn’t won enough. He is easily one of the top three QBs of all time.

  5. I’ve got Jim Kelly #1, Manning #2, Elway #3. Smart, accurate QBs who call(ed) their own plays. Just like me, except for the accurate part. I make Tebow look good.

  6. sure jon…..but “this ones for you”
    8 one and dones,
    10-5 vs “his rival”
    3-1 championship deficit.

he can show me better than u can tell me.

  7. here we go again with all the second string qb’s and head coaches–the best ever in those depts are without a doubt—-terry bradshaw and the emperior chuch knoll-and dont ever forget it-

It is 5-5 since they stopped cheating and also most of the games where road games for Peyton.Brady and Billycheat never beat him at home since then and regarding that 3-1 the 1 was not won by cheating (like the 3 … Spygate does that ring a bell 😉 ) how many 1 or 2 & done has been for Brady since then.

  9. The amount of anti-Peyton trolls is truly amazing. Your jealously flatters the man. As for idiots like this: The Great Ted Thompson the Genius says: Jan 28, 2014 5:08 PM

Really? A disappointment? Go back and check the records, IF you can read. Most fans are pleased not disappointed when a QB gets them to the big game as often.
And as for you raven and viqueen trolls. It’s past your bed time. Take your meds and go to sleep.

  10. Where are all the pats fans who said “Peyton’s a choker”…Oh yea, their home. They lost to the “choker”…How does that happen? That is if he’s such a choker…400 yards passing? How does that happen? But he “chokes”…Yea, and that Raven’s fan? You got destroyed this year, and your quarterback sucks, eat that money he doesn’t earn.

Elway’s right. And I think he’s talking directly about the boys from ESPN, the Boston lovers over there who created the Peyton vs outdoors below 25 degree stupid stats. Every negative stat against Peyton just reflects the opposite of how good their golden boy Brady is, because his home games are at Foxboro.

Every single stat justifies how great Peyton isn’t compared to Brady. These are all stats ESPN make up Like..

    Peyton’s record in the snow
Peyton’s record in games below 30 degrees, but if he wins those, then its 25 degrees, lol, whatever gives him the loss.
Peyton’s record against the wind over 20 mph
Peyton’s record away from the dome, but he plays outside now so they disregaurd this stat they used against 3 years ago, lol…

Then they all it all together and say well Brady’s the better quarterback because well, he’s won more games in tougher conditions…(Cause he plays those games at home)..But then he gets excused when he gags away game after game after game. Gets excused when his teams get caught cheating.

    *******
During their last meeting (Manning/Brady) a stat was put up about Brady.

He’s 8-8 in his past 16 playoff games while also going 0-2 in the SB.

It also stated Brady is 4-5 against Manning in their past 9 meetings.

  12. If QBs like Marino, Kelly, Aikman, Montana, Fouts, and even Elway were able to play under the defensive rules that are in place now, who’s to say Peyton would be top 10 all time? Having said that, great season he had regardless of the result on Sunday.

  13. If you really think Manning is the best ever, than you’re too young to remember Joe Montana.
