We won’t be seeing the first shutout in Super Bowl history.
It’s going to take one heckuva fourth quarter for the Broncos to avoid a lopsided loss, however. Peyton Manning hit Demaryius Thomas for a 14-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter to end the Seahawks’ bid for a second shutout at MetLife Stadium this season. Wes Welker caught a two-point conversion to make the score 36-8 Seahawks heading into the fourth quarter.
The catch by Thomas also put the Broncos ahead in total yards for the game and gave him 12 catches on the night. That’s a new Super Bowl record and one of the few things about this night to reflect well on a member of the Denver offense.
Any chance of a momentous comeback took a blow when the Seahawks recovered the ensuing onside kick to set themselves up near midfield to open up the final 15 minutes of this NFL season. Barring catastrophe, most of it will be spent celebrating the first championship in Seahawks history.
