There’s no killing talk of Peyton Manning’s legacy now

AP

There’s no avoiding the talk now, no matter what John Elway says.

We’re about to have an entire offseason to discuss Peyton Manning’s legacy.

Manning broke a Super Bowl record for completions when he hit 33, and he finished 34-of-49 for 280 yards. But ultimately, his night was a disaster, with two interceptions in Denver’s 43-8 loss in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

That’s going to trigger months and months of discussion of what it means in a historical context, such that it’s an important question to ask.

When Manning is finished, he’ll be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and the discussion won’t take a minute. His individual accomplishments are brilliant beyond description.

But he’s made it easy on his critics with his 11-12 playoff record, which includes eight one-and-done appearances.

Until or unless he adds a second title, there will be those who consider him behind the Tom Bradys and Joe Montanas and Steve Youngs and Terry Bradshaws of the world, though his individual brilliance as a passer exceeds theirs.

While it might not be a completely fair criticism, since he’s one of 11 on the field for the Broncos, it’s one he invited upon himself, with postseason performances that never matched those in the regular season.

  1. He’s behind Montana, Brady, Bradshaw, and Staubach, but ahead of Steve Young, in my opinion.

  2. He’s still in the top class no matter what… and that’s a very exclusive list… one of those guys being Dan Marino who is in the same boat

  3. It’s pretty simple. The media gives him all the credit, they laud him, call him the best ever on and annual basis and mock those who bash his postseason resume.

But guess what? 11-12 isn’t any good and the numbers don’t lie. Manning has been awful in the postseason for his entire career. In the playoffs in 2006 when he got his ring he threw 3 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Best of all time in the regular season, playoff choker extraordinaire. That’s Peyton Manning.

  4. Doesn’t change anything for me. Seattle was simply a better team, and that “defense wins championships” cliche isn’t overused for no reason.

For me there is no “greatest” QB of all time because every era presented different challenges and advantages.

For me the 5 best QBs of all time in NO ORDER are:

    Montana
    Marino
    Manning
    Brady
    Unitas

  5. Peyton has to raise his hand in the press conference and accept that he had a terrible game tonight.
    Tip of hat to Seahawks.

Now time to think about the Redskins offseason for me 🙁 🙂

  6. manning gets all the accolades, the slurpfest, and the credit. Now, he will get the blame, it’s only fair, can’t have it both ways. No way is he the greatest.

  7. I am the biggest Manning apologist out there, but even I gotta admit I’m pretty disappointed in how bad he played. Didn’t he seem injured, he had no velocity on his passes and was not very accurate, throwing a lot of high balls. Totally different from the accuracy and velocity he showed against the Patriots.

  8. You say his brilliance is beyond theirs like its a matter of FACT. It is not. Undeniable that Peyton chokes. Even his one superbowl win was defense and run game.

  9. Not a long discussion. I’m still at the same point I was to start the season in being concerned about the Dumervil snafu and the general lack of quality depth on the Defense. Denver’s roster outside of Peyton Manning just isn’t really that impressive at all, and they have holes all over the place. Peyton helped them get the most out of what they had to work with and there’s no mystery to what they have to do from here. They need to fill all of those holes on both sides of the ball, and then figure out what to do about replacing Manning in a shorter time frame now than they had during this past offseason. They could be on a sharp decline if they don’t do a lot of good moves in the offseason.

  10. Check down to the running back down 36, throwing all those screens. Peyton was scared to throw!

  11. Manning has his legacy off the field. Hence the children’s hospital in Indy. Gotta respect that.

On the field… biggest playoff loser in history. The table was all set for him and he didn’t get it done. This was supposed to be a coronation like Steve Young in 94… and it didn’t happen.

Top 10 yes. Top 5 – absolutely not.

  12. No, it’s a completely fair criticism. Denver didn’t have a single convincing win this year. Even in the playoffs they played the 9-7 chargers and a Pats team down eight starters.

  13. Quite possible…. the worst Super Bowl ever.

I even was getting excited to see the over-hyped commercials.

  14. So Peyton Manning is now 1 for 3 in Super Bowls……… I’m confused, is he still the greatest quarterback EVER????

  15. Not when the media (including PFT, whether you like it or not) keeps talking about “Peyton Manning’s Legacy”

    Let it go.

  16. Just curious… If Brady couldn’t put up points against this Denver Defense (when it counted in an AFC Championship game), what makes people think he would have done anything against this Seattle Defense??

  17. More cotton candy stats for Manning. No substance to any of the many completions and yards. BTW, he only got 5.7 yards per pass tonight. That is pretty bad, but then, that’s how the Seahawks do it.

    LOB!!!

  18. It’s something for foolish people who don’t understand the game to talk about. If you don’t understand that it’s a team game at this point, you never will.

Think about it this way: the Seahawks could’ve won this game with Russell Wilson standing on his head. He literally contributed nothing until they were already up 29-0.

Thanks so much. You REALLY added to the conversation. Now, go back to cheerleading practice, OK?

  20. It’s official: Tom Brady still owns him in postseason wins. Brady is by far and away the better quarterback. He is 3 out of 5 SB wins while Peyton is 1 out of 3. Simply no contest.

  21. At 37 tonight really showed his age, time to retire before something happens with that neck. Walk away while you can.

  22. So Sheli and Peyton have the same number of SB rings as Tommy. Cooper should have learned the forward pass.

  23. Best regular season QB of all time but overall a notch below the best in the playoffs and Super Bowl . His record speaks for itself just not the same player in the bigger games .

Absolutely asinine comment. Nothing else to say about it.

Saying Manning isn’t top 5 is laughable. Absolutely laughable.

  26. Just shows you can have all those regular season TD’s , awards and trophies but that does not win CHAMPIONSHIPS. Being for Denver until having Manning shoved down our throats all week how fitting it was to see his ass kicked. He is a great QB but don’t crown him as the best, far from it. He plays in a QB league with picks picks and more picks, throwing the ball five yards and getting twenty after the catch. His record in post season deserves talked about, not his legacy.

  27. This calls his entire legacy into question. Go back to his days at the University of Tennessee, who won a National Championship the year after he graduated. Look at his only Super Bowl, which he barely won against Rex Grossman. Then look at his postseason record, and his one-and-outs in the playoffs.

No question Peyton is one of the best quarterbacks in league history. But no way is he in the best. Give me someone who knows how to win when it really matters. An 11-12 playoff record is no better than a coin flip. And a quarterback who’s no better than a coin flip cannot be the G.O.A.T.

  28. Kinda feel bad for Peyton. Can’t really blame him for the picks, fumbles and the fact that the Seahawks were playing on a whole different level.

Congratz to the Seahawks and their fans for their first Lombardi! Total dominance in the SB and well deserved.

  29. Where’s Fraudburgler?

Don’t you owe us all “an apology?

    Bahahahaha!!!!

Thats sound you hear is Forsburglar and Florio sobbing in the corner of the Internet!

Wekler, you should stayed in NE where the Best QB of this era resides

  30. The Manning “Rump Swab” Brigade is going to have a hard time defending yet another dismal performance by their messiah in the playoffs.

But yet ESPN will still find a way to spin it favorably for him (most completions in a SB?).

Numbers dont lie —-> 11-12 in the postseason.

    Brady > Manning

  31. At least we can end the GOAT talk – in one sense of the word .

Today’s passing stats are the equivalent of baseballs steroid era – hell I wish we had these defense neutering rules when I was playing , and Marino/ Unitas era passing marks are far more impressive …bottom line you have one game to win – who picks Peyton as your QB ?

  32. Ive been a Colts fan since the 70’s and the truth is this guy just doesn’t play well when it really really counts. Hence the 11-12 playoff record, mostly in games his team was favored in.
Tonight you could see the look right after they took the safety that he was gonna fold

  33. Playoff winning percentages:

    Manning: .500
    Tebow .500

THAT is supposed to be the greatest of all time?

  34. caseyanthonymunoz says: Feb 2, 2014 10:08 PM

Biggest choke artist in sports history. 11-12 in the postseason. Sorry, truth hurts.

Im not a betting man, but if I had to, Id wager a months pay you are under 20 years old and a virgin.

  35. What’s sad is that in a few years people will look at his stats from this game and tell you he had a good game. He was horrible. Who will Adam Shefner say cost him this game?

  36. This was a pretty one sided game. Peyton never got on track, Denver’s offense was out of sync and their D never got off the field, and Seattle flat out dominated. Surprising game from Seattle but they deserve the win and accolades. Congratulations!

“Behind Terry Bradshaw? I can see an argument for the other players mentioned but if you think Bradshaw is a better QB you must be drunk.”
    —————————
Bradshaw won 4 rings – had to play back when DBs were allowed to cover receivers.

Back when defenses were allowed to lay the wood.
If peyton played back then – he’d be too busy whining and complaining than winning.

  38. Still the best ever. Even if Jesus himself was their qb, they still would have lost by 20. Let’s be honest.

  39. generally peyton manning comes up small in big games. look at his career post-season record.

eli is much better in the clutch. 2 SB appearances and 2 SB wins.

i don’t know peyton gets all the press. eli is the gamer.

  40. His only SB win was against Rex Grossman, during a postseason in which he threw 3TDs and 7 INTs.

No denying that he just doesn’t get it done when it matters most; as a Peyton fan this super bowl was painful.

  41. Can we play a little game of one of these aren’t like the other?
Tom Brady and Joe Montana and Steve Young and Terry Bradshaw
hint: minimum of 4 super bowls

  42. So many life losers talking smack about Peyton. Peyton had a bad day but center, guard, tackle, receivers, and tight ends also did. They did not match Seattle’s intensity out of the gate. Live and learn. You lick your wounds and fight another day. Peyton is a humble and very skilled player. They got beat really bad as a team. Tomorrow is Monday. We move on. Congrats. to the Seahawks.

  43. Saying Manning isn’t top 5 is laughable. Absolutely laughable.

    —————-
Montana, Unitas, Elway, Young, Brady > Manning

You’ll notice that Manning hasn’t even been the greatest all time QB of his two teams .

  44. Well, Peyton has now lost the same number of SBs as Tom Brady.

But he hasn’t won as many. And he won’t.

The road back to the SB is tough; AFCW (except Oak) is a good division.

On a side note, let’s not hear any more talk from SF 9ers….it’s clear who the best in the NFCW is.

  45. He showed he is not among the truly elite QBs.

Both Brees and Brady fared better against this same team in SEA.

Either would have made it a game today on a neutral field. Elite QBs don’t choke in big games.

  46. This Super Bowl clearly reminds us that NFL football is a team sport and the Seahawks trashed the Broncos with strong players in their defense and offense. The fact the QB Wilson is good, but not great while Seattle is the World Champs is a testament to the lunch bucket players who do the dirty work and never get proper credit, which most often is mistakenly given to the QBs instead of the true players who enable the QBs to succeed. Where would Brady, Mannings, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, and other star QBs be without the solid offensive line that allows these QBs to build their performances on?

Anyway, Congrats to the Champs and give credit to the non-star players on every team.

  47. All of you guys, who bash Manning: Go ahead and have at it.
You have to ask yourself though: Why is it so important tyo you? If your guy (whateve QB it is) ends up being considered better by the majority of the fans or the media…..great.
Myself, I simpl have enjoyed wtaching his career and hopefully can continue to do so for another season or two. Don’t know at this point.
But at any rate, whomever your favourite QB is (other than RWilson) din’t win it all this year either.

  48. If they got stomped by any other team, Manning’s legacy should take a hit. The real story is we watched an all-time D pitch a near perfect game. When this happens, there’s rarely anything an offense can do about it. Let’s just appreciate what we witnessed instead of tearing down Manning.

    Too often, the argument is:
a)so and so is the best ever
    or
b)so and so is a choke artist and sucks

Some elite athlete become other-worldly in the big spot (i.e. MJ, Bird, Montana, Brady in his prime) Manning never had that intangible. That said, I can’t think of a QB that could have won that game.

  49. If you put Terry Bradshaw ahead of Peyton Manning, there’s not much that can be done to help you.

  50. Peyton gets in the big room with the greats, but he doesn’t get to stay after hours.

It’s Montana, Brady, unitas, elway, Bradshaw, aikman and staubach.

  51. What if the Chicago Bears of 2006 had a quarterback………….we may be talking 0-3 in Super Bowls…………..great player, great regular seasons but in the clutch, stats say it all 11-12, 1-2…………..

  52. Manning’s legacy is sealed, great quarterback, but he will no longer be considered greatest of all time. Not given in conversation now given Brady is definitely ahead of him.

  53. Whats the point of a guy in any sport who is there for the records and glory. He could have retired when he hurt his neck but came back to break Bret Favres records. That’s where I have a problem with people like him, they won’t quit until they are forced to.

  54. Best quarterback to ever play the game. The haters will die out and be nonexistent 15 years from now and it’ll be universally accepted. If he plays 2 more years he’ll break the passing yardage and passing touchdown records. Combine it with 5 league MVP’s and it’s a no brainer. A lot of you clowns talk like losing in a superbowl somehow hurts his status, as if he was better off being one of the 30 other quarterbacks who couldn’t get as far.

  55. No QB ever won the SB with two different teams, 48 years onward, why did Denver fans think otherwise. An overrated team got hammered, the AFC is in shambles, when a beat up NE is the second best team in the AFC, you know the AFC wasn’t ready to win this game, Manning chocked, what’s new.
And please Wes Welker now sucked in the SB with both Manning AND Brady…

  56. The single most over hyped QB in NFL history.

Playoff games > regular season games.

The biggest choker with the most byes and home games in history chokes yet again.

Not a top 10 playoff QB. Maybe not a top 20.

He should retire now because he’ll never win another meaningful game in his life.

  57. Peyton is still one of the best to play the game but hes not the greatest. I think he probably prepares the hardest and is one of the most intelligent QBs to play, but if things dont go the way he planned he really cant adjust very well. If that mismatch he thought that was going to be there ISNT there, he just has never been good at improvising or making things happen.

He reminds me of a robot in that if the game unfolds exactly how it was game planned he can execute that to almost perfection as he has in many regular season games throughout his career. When you turn up the heat, he does have a penchant for choking. IMO hes never been clutch under pressure.

I mean if you need a game winning drive in a tightly fought game where there isnt a “get out of jail free card” play youd have to take a Montana or Brady every single time over Manning.

Now if your playing the worst defense in football and you want to put up the best stats possible then you go with Peyton.

  58. The better TEAM won. As far as his playoff record goes, the teams he played against also had offenses and defense’s. If you look back on his career he got lesser teams as far as they could go. This morning a comment was made on ESPN that Maddux and Glavine each won over 300 games; should they be judged on one World Series win?

  59. Dude was great. Now he is good…….and old. We witnesses the end of an era. Surprise if he comes back next year. Oh, anyone get a kick out of watching smart-a## Welker lose? Nice.

  60. Deep down inside, does Eli like this? I know he’s mad because the TV commercials they’d have done would have been big money, but still…. Kid brother/older brother, ya know…. He loves it in a sick sorta way, but he’ll never admit it…. Heh heh heh

  61. Legacy? Would you rather have Manning’s regular season numbers or Montana’s numbers during the post season (4-0 Super Bowl record with ZERO interceptions)? Montana is without question better than Manning. Manning wilts when he is playing a team with as much talent as his own team. He’s the 2nd best QB of his generation.

  62. What’s funny before every draft we hear about the next great franchise QB and who should be drafted #1 …. HELLO built a great defence and you don’t have to gamble and waste a first round pick.

    Defence wins championships!

Also how come all the great QBs are bashed on this site.

  63. “Until or unless he adds a second title, there will be those who consider him behind the Tom Bradys…”

Well, Tom Brady won his rings before he was considered NFL-elite status. Ever since 2007, Tom’s came up short in the big moments too.

  64. Boy there are some dumb people on here. By some of your logic, I suppose Eli is better than Brady since Brady can’t beat him. It’s a team sport people.

Bradshaw is probably my favorite retired QB, but c’mon people, he was in a system like Brady with belichick. You could have plugged any decent QB in on these 70s Steelers team and they would have won.

  65. It’s funny. Eli and Peyton are exact opposites. Eli has mediocre regular seasons and is supremely clutch in the big games. Peyton has absolutely outstanding regular seasons and is mediocre at best, in the playoffs.

  66. There’s a lot of comments on here that hint or point at the press with Manning. I can’t agree more, there are 31 other teams in the NFL and all season on Sirius NFL channel, the websites etc., Manning, Manning, Manning, Broncos, Broncos give it a rest. Manning seems like a completely class guy, team has great players, but really, enough about the Broncos and Manning. they got their butts handed to them. Yet now it will be all legacy talk, even losing it won’t stop. BTW: MVP really? all season everyone saying what a great team the Broncos have, how many skill players they have, so either Manning is the MVP, which means they couldn’t live without him or they have a cast of great players, pick one!

    ——————————————————
AIKMAN? Because he was lucky enough to play with Emmitt Smith and one of the greatest O-Lines ever assembled? Why not just throw Bob Griese out there too? Their stats are comparable. If Superbowl wins are going to be your Litmus test, then put Big Ben and Eli ahead of Peyton too.

  68. Say what you will about Peyton Manning…the entire Broncos team was flat outmatched. NO team was going to beat the Seahawks tonight. What a horrible game to watch.

  69. You do all know that Peyton’s career playoff qb rating is higher than Brady’s right? He has taken a lot of OK teams to the playoffs by covering their weaknesses with his incredible talent. The problem is, in the playoffs, those team weaknesses get exposed. Get off his back.. Jeeze.

  70. Look, this is nothing new with Peyton. Anybody who follows (or followed) the SEC back in the day, knows Peyton was the exact same way in college. Lots and lots of regular season meaningless wins and stats and loss after loss in the big conference games.

Besides, next year he’ll throw 6 TD’s in the season opener and the sycophants will start all over about how great he is.

P.S. Bronco fans, I think its time to give Tebow a little love for turning your franchise around…maybe he will “reverse the curse”.

  71. I don’t see that as mannings loss. I see that as an offensive line that never faced a challenge all season, a wide receiving group never challenged by corners or safeties, and a defense that never played an offense with real speed like Seattle.

When Harvin took that draw in the first quarter, I said this game is over, and it was. Harvin made denver look silly. Nobody on that defense has speed. Kearse is a beast! Seattle has four great wide receivers that showed up big time tonight.

Denver was an overrated team due to a really poor conference. Case in point: New England made it to the afcc with all those injuries.

Manning to me was pretty sharp. His bad throws were all a result of pressure. This game is 63-0 if any other person is Denver’s qb.

  72. Huge Pats fan here. Congratulations to the Seahawks for a gritty opportunistic win. I’m a fan, it will be fun to watch this team mature and I’m sure they will be a tough matchup for the foreseeable future. As to the whole Manning / Brady debate… Man, does that crap get old. It is really hard to win a Super Bowl, and both of these guys have been to more of there share of big games. To call Manning a choker is a joke, he is in the mix every year. When I see Manning on the schedule, I get worried. I also have the upmost respect for the way he carries himself off the field; a true leader, confident, respectful, and always looking to get better. Reminds me of Brady, who is a similar competitor. Can we please stop with all the whining BS, and be happy that we are witnessing the last few years of one of the greatest QB rivalries that we will ever see? I’m sure that Peyton & Tom look forward to meeting each other on the field with much anticipation and respect. Perhaps us fans should take their lead.
Congrats again, Seahawks! Enjoy the win, they don’t come along every day.

  73. “All of you guys, who bash Manning: Go ahead and have at it. You have to ask yourself though: Why is it so important tyo you?”

    —————————————————

Personally, I’m sick of hearing about The Great Golden Boy, all the way back to his days at Tennessee, who always disappears during the big game. There was no bigger game for UT back then than vs Florida and Manning was supposed to change their fortune. 0-4 vs the Gators, but they won the national championship the very next year after Manning graduated. Yes, he’s a great technician and has a deep understanding of the game. But when the chips are down and the pressure’s on, Manning folds. *That’s* his legacy and what people will say about him forever. Manning’s only SB ring came in a year when he had yet another horrible postseason but his running game and defense overcame his weakness. In fact, Tony Dungee may be most remembered for winning a Super Bowl despite having Manning as his quarterback.

  74. Sure this lose definitely wasn’t all on Peyton. It was a combination of the defense, special teams, and lack of offensive production. However, PEYTIN MANNING DID NOT PLAY WELL. He didn’t just choke in one instance, but he just played a flat out horrible game. The only passes he could complete were short screen passes and and dingy 5 yard ones and was frequently missing open wrs down field. His arm didn’t look to great from the start and he was not precise at all. I would have respected the loss more if he had played a good game but he flat out sucked.

  75. Having had the opportunity to observe this man his ENTIRE career, I’d have to say perhaps the media has overdone it a bit in terms this “GREATNESS” that they heap upon him. I’m not saying that the guy is NOT. Very good or perhaps excellent QB, but like strokemyego and so many others so nicely alluded to- putting aside his regular season stats and accolades, Peyton is average at best. Being 44 years of age, I’ve been there and done that: Marino, Fouts, Elway….. I love the Chargers and Fouts would put up astronomical numbers…. Air Coryell they called it…., but as high powered and prolific as that offence was- where are they in the annals of History as teams with REAL credibility???

Personally, I think the guy is pushing too hard now….., with all the surgeries and procedures I’m reading he’s had done on his neck, maybe he’s just gotta eat a little humble pie and say “enough is enough”- the poor guy’s probably ripping his fricken hair out tho over the fact that his little bro- who himself can be dreadful at times, as already gotten 2 RINGS- not ONE- but TWO…. He knows it, we know it and those darn sports pundits keep reminding him in one way or another… I digress, did y’all see the look on Eli’s face when they cut away to him with his brother down by like 38pts??? It’s THAT kinda stuff that may keep Peyton in the fiekd till he’s 45! And I’m not even kidding….

  76. Greatest postseason Quarterback in NFL history is Bart Starr. 9 and 1 record with 5 championships in 7 yrs and 2 MVP awards.

  77. This is a bunch of crap, anyone who knows football could see Peyton was under pressure all night and didn’t have time to get more than small gainers for passing until well into the third quarter. The offensive line was rotten, and the broncos d line was good for the run but terrible for the pass; they had a hard time staying in position to play Wilson’s run and pass much in the way the packers were with kaepernick.

  78. Seattle probably would have beat Denver tonight no matter how good/bad Manning played.

Still though, he didn’t do what great QB’s are suppose to do…. give their team a chance. Half of Seattle’s points in the first half were the result of two Manning interceptions. The entire game might have turned out different if, instead of throwing interceptions, Manning scored on those drives instead. But he didn’t.

What’s his legacy? The fact that its hardly surprising that Payton Manning interception helped lose him the Super Bowl tells you all you need to know.

  79. Peyton may as well retire now. With the Hawks and the Niners going strong in the NFC there is no way he will win a Super Bowl in the next three years. His team was exposed tonight. The rest of the league will study what the Hawks did to neutralize the Bronco offense. Pull up your couch, Peyton, you are done.

  80. Look at the most immobile QBs in modern NFL History — Fouts, Jaworski, Manning, Marino, Hart.

They don’t win the big one because when their protection breaks down the best that they can hope for is a throwaway.

Until QB Rating stats incorporates rushing yards as a QB, the statistics will always be incomplete, and Manning and Marino will therefore always be overrated.

  81. Denver got destroyed on BOTH sides of the football, Manning was the least of Denver’s problems.

  82. I thought football was a team sport. What if Manning played for Belichick’s Patriots and Brady played for the Colts? Peyton is one of the best QBs to ever play. Period. Sure, don’t call him the greatest ever. The greatest evers needed great defenses, coaches, and, yes, even kickers. Nobody was beating Seattle tonight. If you think Russell Wilson is better than Manning, go back to the crack pipe. Those that want to point out Manning’s postseason record need to remember that defense wins championships, and Bradshaw, Montana, Aikman, and Brady all had much better Defenses than Manning ever had.

  83. That Seattle defense was the best I’ve ever seen save the 1985 Bears. They just kept coming

You can’t blame Manning for the fact that his O line couldn’t protect him. You CAN blame him for the fact that he couldn’t get the guys around him to raise their game enough (inspire them) so they could at least make a game out if it. The whole team stunk up the place – offense defense and special teams. Manning seemed to just sit there, whereas Brady would have been all over the place screaming at the guys – I’ve seen it on more than one occasion.

Seattle is tied with the 1971 Dolphins for the youngest SB winning team in history.

    That’s scary.

The MVP was a 7th round draft choice.

    That’s scary.

Seattle fans – congratulations and please don’t tear your town apart celebrating.

  84. Since when did it become such common practice to argue over a player’s legacy WHILE HE IS STILL PLAYING? I remember there were arguments for years early in his career over whether Nolan Ryan would ever be a Hall of Famer because he was barely a .500 pitcher. But by the time he finished he amassed so many strikeouts and no hitters no one with half a brain cared about his .525 W-L record.

And since when are Super Bowls the only measure of success anyway? For heaven’s sake, Favre only won one Super Bowl. Warner won one. Marino won none. Kelly won none. Jim Plunkett won two, but does any sane person think he was better than Peyton Manning or those other guys? Besides, if the Bronco’s win the Super Bowl next year, what a waste of time this will all turn out to be.

  85. A lot of us have a problem with the fact that Manning is shoved down our throats non-stop. He loves the camera and the media loves him because he cooperates and feeds them stories. They feel compelled to defend him. Alternatively, a guy like Brady focuses on football, and doesn’t give the media as much material to sell. Let’s be honest, Brady has played in what, 8 AFC Championship games in 12 seasons? He’s got 5 Superbowls and three Lombardi’s. His teams never crap their pants like this, and if they fell behind like that, they always come back. His teams have given us a majority of the great games we’ve seen over the years. I think people fail to appreciate the level of competition and excitement his teams have provided. If I have to pick one QB to win one game, it would be Brady, hands down, and not even close. It’s just not a question, regardless of who your favorite team is. We’ve all seen it to many times. Nobody wins them all, but if my team is playing for the championship, the guy I do not want to see lining up behind center for the other team, is Tom Brady.

Congrats to Pete Carroll. He was a good guy in a tough spot with the Pats, but he always conducted himself well.

Congrats to Seattle fans. They got jobbed in the Super Bowl a few years back. I thought it could happen again, but glad it didn’t.

Congrats to Richard Sherman for tweaking his ankle and being removed from the field, which prevented an otherwise smart well spoken guy with talent, from making himself public enemy #1 when the gun sounded.

To FORSEBRGLER: Just because you pre-wrote your mea culpa and sat in front of your computer clicking refresh so you could be the first to post, thinking you would ingratiate yourself to Seahawk fans does not change the fact that you are a steaming fetid turd, and an absolute loser, of the kind rarely seen around here, spending the majority of your life trolling sports boards and video game circles, spreading your particular brand of childish vitriol from your Mom’s basement. How’s 43-8, never in the game, not even for one single play, and a world record 5th Super Bowl loss taste? You like that? Yeah, I thought so….

  86. haha did someone really comment on how Peyton Manning is ahead of Steve Young?? BEYOND comical.

  87. They’re ALL “one of 11 on the field” stop making excuses………..and he is “behind” (not far behind, but behind) Montana, Brady, Young, Bradshaw. The Broncos had a soft schedule, (you can whine and argue won’t change it) which helped immeasurably with his undeniable fantastic year. But the “experts” need to keep it in perspective. He is not the GOAT they make him out to be.

  88. LOL HIS HORRIFIC DEFENSE GIVES UP 43 POINTS TO THE BEST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE, BUT HES THE REASON THEY LOST?

You clowns are hilarious, I’m sure Coach Fox is patting his defense on the back and blaming Peyton for not scoring 50 points on the Seahawks defense.

  89. truthfactory says:

Just curious… If Brady couldn’t put up points against this Denver Defense (when it counted in an AFC Championship game), what makes people think he would have done anything against this Seattle Defense??

I highly doubt the patriots would put themselves in Denver’s predicament. BB is in a different stratosphere than Fox. He is in a sense the Pats 12th man. I’m not saying the Pats would have won at all, Seattle is unreal. But Brady would match thier intensity much better Brady is the silent assassin to Peyton aw gee shucks country boy demeanor. Psychologically Brady matches up better against the confident secondary.

  90. Peyton Manning did not have a bad game; he was not allowed to by the stifling defense of Seattle.

He has a Super Bowl win, unlike Dan Marino who has none.

    Both are great players.

  91. So this is the discussion happening at the kids’ table?

The grown ups allget that there are more people on a team than the quarteback. Of course, for the people who only do football during the SB, that isn’t so easy to understand.

Guess I’ll have to keep looking for a place where people are discussing how dynamite that Seahawks defense was. They were on!!!

  92. Peyton Manning is the greatest QB of all time and it isn’t even close. 5 MVPs, the guy just threw 55 TDs and broke the record for passing yardage this year. He has a Super Bowl on his resume, I think that justifies his legacy as the greatest ever. Brady didn’t do much to win his 3 Superbowls and he gets too much credit.

  93. a great QB except when its clutch time and while the seahawks are one of the best defenses that i have ever seen, Manning stunk against the saints and the bears in we are being real and being under 500 come money time is not the signature of the GOAT. Manning never has come big in the big show on the real. Brady is better, Montana, Marino, Staubach, and i make an argument for Warren Moon. Manning is maybe in the 5th slot all time and maybe not. on the real Eli Manning is more clutch in money time than his Big Brother and you can quote me.

  94. he still has a ring and 3 appearances. many QBs would dream of those things. there;s a long list of great quarterbacks who don’t have one and even a few recent ones with a win but won’t reach it again.at the end of the day the guy is going back to his mansion, deposit his check and vacation in Fiji.Seattle’s D was just dominant. It wouldn’t have mattered what AFC team they played.

  95. The only qb imo that could give Seattle legit competition imo is Aaron Rodgers and eventually Colin Kaepernick when he gets some more years in.

Seattle will lose michael bennett in free agency and cliff avril will be gone after next season when the have to pay richard sherman russell wilson earl thomas kj wright etc. I doubt they can keep all of them.

The ball bounced the way of seattle all night because any good coach with a brain knows you jam Denver WR at the line because peyton no longer has a great arm anymore. His mind is as sharp as ever but his body naturally is beat down after 4 neck surgeries.

  96. I think Eli is a better post season QB. Oddly enough I think Peyton is a better QB during the regular season. In fairness to Peyton, Seattle’s defense just smothered him and the receivers like they did to most of their opponents during the regular season. I also think that SF would have given Seattle a better game than Denver. On games like this one, the game should be called Super Blow.

  97. Please. No more of this silly debate about whether Peyton Manning is the best ever. Baby brother Eli is 8 and 3 in playoff games and he is never included in these “best ever” conversations–with good reason. Of current QBs, even Mark Sanchez and Rex Grossman have better winning percentages, as do Brady, Flacco, Rodgers, Brees, Rothlisberger, Cutler, Schaub, Ryan, Kaepernick, et al.

  98. Archie Manning had a career losing record. Peyton Manning being the Oldest of the two Successful NFl QBS took in his fathers failures and did not learn from them. Eli Manning got a chance to learn from his father and brothers mistakes. Making him one of the Clutchest QBs of all time. The only Legend is Eli Manning.

  99. Peyton is not one of the best to play the game. The Seahawks showed that tonight. What great QB only leads his team to 8 points? If the game was based on Mannings turnovers(for scores) and Mannings tds(to his own team) he would lose 9-8 on a Pick six and a safety. He is not a legend. He is a loser.

  100. Football is the Ultimate Team Sport. I feel bad for all you ESPN-brainwashed quarterback obsessives. You really are missing out on the beauty of organized football.

  101. Since when is Peyton Manning individualy responsible for his Super Bowl wins and losses???
I am so sick of people saying ” he won this game” or “he lost that game” You have no sports sense what so ever to say something like that. No ONE player is responsible for winning or losing a TEAM game you IDIOTS!!!!

  102. I think Seattle will be a dynasty w/all the young talent. I hope my Chiefs can win the AFC West next season!!! I have mad respect for Seattle especially Russell Wilson and the defense!

I’ve followed Russell’s career since he was drafted. My Chiefs could have picked him; however, we needed offensive line.

    Congrats Seattle!

  103. To all the P. Manning fans who think they are being magnanimous by allowing us “others” to call out Mr. Pizza. Sit on it and rotate. Two very obvious points. One – Manning ‘s RECORD tells us he loses more big games than he wins. His RECORD. Not my opinion. Two – having had to sit through two weeks of P.Manning being over-hyped as the best ever by the sports media (really all season, last year’s media darling RG3 couldn’t even answer the opening bell this season) so you bet it’s time for them and all who bought into the fiction to take it on the chin.
Forget watching tape. Manning stunk it up because he and his receivers never FELT the physicality of a team like Seattle all year. Homework and hype guarantee nothing. Brutal defense and fewer turnovers will win every time.

  104. I’m a texans fan so I have no dog in the fight but if you gave Peyton the hoodie as his head coach I bet they would have won more Super Bowls then Brady has with him.

  105. If our defense did that to the MVP and the best offense of all time …. That just means we have by far the best defense of all time!!!!!

  106. All these Brady > Manning comments.

Do those people realize Brady didn’t win any of those Super Bowls? The defense and special teams carried him to his rings.

Brady and Peyton are 0-4 in their last 4 Super Bowls. Neither of them is the greatest QB of all time.

  107. Love the Manning haters… I’d take him over any quaterback in the league. The one thing he gives his team each year is chance, a chance to make it to the superbowl. How can you hate a guy for that? “But what’s the point if he doesn’t win in the superbowl, he’s a choke artist”… He doesn’t play running back, can’t control the offensive line, he can’t catch the ball or play defense; everybody, not just Manning, have to be on the same page. Even if Manning was on his best today, that team was not going to win, I don’t care who you are… If he throws 5 tds and O ints with 500yrds but still loses the game, yall would’ve still said he is a choke artist. It’s all good..Can’t wait next year for Peyton to beat you’re team and reaches the Superbowl and give his team a CHANCE to win, I’d take that any given year!

  108. after reading all of these different comments I have came to one conclusion, for those that like Peyton Manning, he is the best in their minds no matter what Peyton does or does not do. If Peyton, loses a game you will hear all kinds of excuses why he lost, but if he had of won this S B game to them and the media he would have been the best player to have ever played the game of football. Now on the other side of the coin, the people that dislike Peyton they are going to bring up each and every bad point and game that Peyton has ever played. and especially the ones that he has lost. IMHO, I just think that the one thing that hurts Peyton Manning more than any thing else that he may or may not have done and is held against him the most is, ” How the media and the sports people just keep trying to push Peyton down everybody’s throat each and every day and do not even give things a brake in the off season, little lone the regular season, and in my own opinion I just think that it is more of the media’s fault than anyone else’s. But that is just my opinion. At the same time I will agree with some of these other posters, I do not believe that Peyton would have any where near the stats that he has today , if he had played back in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s when the defense was more open and did not have all the rules that they have today ,that is holding them back from going after the Q B’s like they did back in the 50’s,60’s,70’s and the 80’s.. When you stop and think about it, my oh my how the rules have changed more in favor of the Q B’s and the offense than it was back then. Course at the same time, all of those same rules would also apply to all of the other Q B’S that are playing today.

  109. Peyton Manning completed 69 percent of his passes tonight for 280 yards against the best defense in the NFL. He had two passes intercepted, one of which might have been his fault, but the pick six was clearly a football play where the Seattle defensive lineman blew up the offensive tackle and hit Manning’s arm while he was throw the pass.

Did Peyton make ill-advised kick returns out of the end zone? No.

Did Peyton let Percy Harvin run wild or Russell Wilson find an open throwing lane? No.

Should Peyton take some of the responsibility in Denver’s loss? Yes, but football is the ultimate team game and Denver’s not in the Super Bowl without Manning.

Peyton’s legacy is secure as one of the all-time greats. I don’t think you can ever determine the greatest unless you had some way to have the great quarterbacks on the list line up with different teams and see how things panned out. Who knows, if John Elway plays for the Dolphins he might have been the QB without the Super Bowl championships.

  110. Everyone calm down.
I ask all other fans of teams other than Seattle, where was your teams QB tonight? Not in Super Bowl. This was Manning THIRD Super Bowl, that means he has won THREE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES and he has won a Super Bowl and a Super Bowl MVP.

He is only made fun of for losing so much in the post season because he gets there so much. Other QBs may be in situations with their teams to take advantage of their fewer opportunities in the post season, but that doesn’t change the fact that Manning has played in 23 Post Season games. So he’s had 8 one and dones, and 2 SB losses. The guy has won 3 Conference Titles and a Super Bowl. He wasn’t going to be considered as clutch in the post season as Starr, Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman or Brady, even had he won tonight, it was just going to add to his overall accomplishments to maybe say hes the best ever overall, but he still wouldn’t have been the best ever in the post season. Also, Steve Young has 1 ring, just like Manning and lost 3 other NFC title games, so I don’t know why they mentioned him.

  111. Everyone calm down.

  112. All these Brady fans are on here insulting Manning. They forget that since Spygate Brady is 6-6 in the post season after being 12-2 during Spygate.
Brady’s first SB title was set up off the Tuck Rule vs Oak then he was knocked out of the AFC title game that year and Bledsoe got them 10 points and the special teams scored 14 more.
In his first SB he threw for only 143 yds and one TD thrown behind the WR. Then he dunked his way to a 50 yd FG attempt that won the game.
He aslo had great defense from Belichick in those days as well.

  113. Why do people discount the fact that he has already won a Super Bowl? He HAS won the big one. Now he is working on his 2nd.

The “cant win the big one” title needs to stick with guys like Michael Vick, Jay Cutler or Carson Palmer.

  114. Somewhere, lurking in the darkness behind a keyboard and clutching what might be his 5th or 50th glass of scotch is Jim Irsay. And he’s laughing his @$$ off so hard it’s taking hours for him to tweet the words “I told you so”

  115. The loss wasn’t Manning’s fault. The Seahawks played a much better game and have an incredible defense. The Bronco’s struggled all night offensively. They had no good solutions for cracking the Seahawk defense.

If Manning plays next year and the Broncos improve a few things they could make another Super Bowl run, but it won’t be easy. 49ers thought they would be the next big winner until they were blindsided by the Seahawks.

Elway is the oldest QB to win a Super Bowl at the age of 38. He had lost a step, by then, but got the win. Manning could do the same.

  116. The performance by Denver was one of the worst in the history of a title game let alone the SB. I mean they didn’t tackle nor block very well. They never made a game out of it. Seattle is super!

  117. The freaking pundits put him way up in the pedestal and so the fall is just as hard. I feel bad for Peyton. The narrative fed us is not supposed to end this way.— brady or manning? The legacy of one is tied to the other. Peyton stats this year is phenomenal and Brady’s hardly register anything. Yet the way Brady fought for those improbable wins bespoke of inner toughness. Sure there are meltdowns both of the games and his temper but he claws back. I just did not see this tonight with Peyton. This night will haunt him the way Brady’s multiple sb losses still haunt him. These two great quarterbacks will still barrel on to chase the next sb win. As for legacy… They are both still defining it but when everything is said and done both of them will be hofers.

  118. Manning had a hard time with Baltimore defense last year and against Pats defense in their hey day. One of the worst SB O-line performances of all time by Denver. Not sure why they were calling 5-yard routes and draw rush plays. Russell Wilson scrambled and made plays when needed. Pete Carroll definitely outcoached Fox and Del Rio. Del Rio should be fired. Defense made no big plays and looked afraid. Real Super Bowl was played in NFC Championship game. Niners might have had the edge on a neutral field. Great team performance by Seahawks in all 3 phases and thank you for a great season with all the respect you share with your fans. I enjoyed watching a defense dominate a 50 TD QB. Next year many teams will be in the hunt. Rivers is better, I wish Tebow would return just to anger the people who hate him for being an average QB that plays big in crunch time. Luckiest man tonight was Roger Goodell who avoided a polar vortex that would have made tonight one of the worst sporting blunders of all time.

  119. Leave it to you people to bash manning, seriously do any of you troll girls actually watch football? Or is it read stupid not funny comment and recycle? I don’t really need to ask, I know it is tough to actually come up with your own material. As a hawks fan, I actually respect great players like Manning, he didn’t lose this game. There is no qb in this league who would have beat the hawks tonite, and pftpoet um besides you being the worst troll on earth, your asterisk Super Bowl comment shows how dumb you are…

  120. Loss is not on Peyton. Denver D blew chunks and even if they didn’t there was nothing open against Seattle. A truly rare elite defense like Seattle’s will beat an elite QB every time. A QB can only take what the defense gives him. If repeatedly on plays there are no windows to throw into what is the QB supposed to do. People like to continue narratives even when the evidence doesn’t fit. They will continue to play the Peyotn is a playoff choker narrative. On one pick he got his arm swatted and the ball laid up in the air like the bouqet at a wedding. On his other pick Julius Thomas messed up on the route.

  121. It was evident in this game that media wouldn’t
pick on him..those interceptions were brutal and could have been caught by my daughter, but all we heard was defense..Count # of times Peyton said defense in his pressed..clearly shifting blame..he’s great but not clutch or lucky like his brother..

  122. A note to all the Peyton jock sniffers. We listened to you go on and on and on and on and on and on all year. Now you call us haters? Heck, even I almost beat him.

    Love,
    Rex Grossman

  123. rodgers419 says: Feb 2, 2014 10:47 PM

    ==============================
He’s the best passer to ever play the game, and the best regular season QB to ever play, but not the best QB.

Being a great QB is about more than skill, it’s about leading a team, especially when things get tough. When Seattle was taking it to the Broncos, did Manning look determined to get his team back into it, or did he look down?

He is under .500 for his career in the post season, and the Super Bowl. He has more playoff losses then any QB in history, and more one and dones than any QB in history.

Three Super Bowls, three pick 6’s.

I’m not a “hater,” he’s a great player and seems to be a good guy as well. What makes a lot of people crazy is the way the apologists and the national media swoon all over him and say “XXX team lost to Peyton Manning” all year, yet point to it being a team game when he loses again in the playoffs. When the Broncos clinched the AFC Championship game, did NBC show the Denver management box celebrating? Nope, they showed the Manning family.

He’s a great player, and will be remembered as such, but he is not the greatest QB of all time. He and his team have come up short too many times.

  124. many qbs can throw 5 tds against oakland in october or december many just don’t because they don’t need to but true greats ….rise to the occasion
some guys just cannot answer the bell
legacy will be greatest regular season qb ever
but in the post season he has been well SHY of expectations and pete king screeching constantly cannot change that.

  125. You literally finished the argument there. His individual brilliance exceeded theirs. Period. When discussing legacy it’s an individual discussion not a team one.

  126. This game cements Manning’s legacy as the best who’s ever played the position…..no QB has ever gotten such a horrendous team TO the Super Bowl. Manning is so good that he can drag average teams with bad coaches deep into the playoffs….but when these bad teams don’t “finish” its Peyton’ fault? He should be praised for getting terrible teams into these games in the first place.

  127. I swear from the opening bell he looked like Michael Spinx, scared to death, even before the fight started against Tyson. It was embarrassing. It was an outstanding game by the Hawks. Great great D.

  128. The Peyton apologists really don’t have a retort for the following facts:

Manning is a “below .500” quarterback in the playoffs

His team was the top seed in his conference SEVEN times, yet he won just a single Super Bowl. That means he is “underperforming” in the playoffs.

His team was favored in every Super Bowl in which he played, yet he only won a single Super Bowl. That means he is “underperforming” in the biggest game.

For his lone Super Bowl win he beat Rex Grossman. Compare that to Montana, who routinely beat outstanding quarterbacks to win his Super Bowls (Elway, Simms, Esiason), or how about Drew Brees who in his Super Bowl run beat three probable Hall of Famers (Warner, Favre and yes, Peyton Manning.

He can’t be in even a discussion of the best ever……CASE CLOSED !!!

  129. apkyletexas says:

I can’t blame him for the pick-6. If his linemen can’t hold a block for 2.5 seconds, there’s really not much more he can do.—————————–

How about eat the ball and take the sack. Oh yea giving up points is a way better solution.

  130. Why is it a team gets to the Super Bowl, and now he sucks? What is wrong with you people? My team made the playoffs, but the Chiefs watched the SB from home. Do I think they suck? Heck no! They had a great season.
Manning had a great season and had a bad game (along with his entire team it seems) when he got to the Super Bowl! Give it a rest people. Manning is one of the greatest QB’s I’ve ever watched. Loved him with the Colts, love him with the Broncos. But, I’m not so delusional to say he sucks because then (other than Seattle) you can say that about EVERY other team and QB.
Personally, I love watching him play, and yes, I was cheering for Seattle, but I’m not so blind as to say Manning and the Broncos sucked. Seattle just came to play, while the Broncos were still on the bus.

  131. Big choke artist. And he should be ashamed of the way he played last night. Even his Papa John commercials are bad.

  132. It is the media that got this ‘legacy’ issue up and running, and when it proved to be a non-story they had to backtrack and whatever.

To his credit Manning was one of those who debunked the whole issue.

  133. Peyton Manning really is awful in Super Bowls. Now two teams can vouch for that. That was just a brutal performance. The apologists need to run and hide.

Greatest regular season QB in NFL history. But raise the stakes and he wilts. The bar I was at had fans calling for Eli Manning at halftime. Say what you want about the two brothers, but if Eli has fought tooth and nail into the post season and survived, he doesn’t choke like his big bro on the biggest stage.

  134. ontboltfan says: Feb 2, 2014 10:34 PM

Both Brees and Brady fared better against this same team in SEA.

    ________________________

WTF are you talking about? Brady didn’t play Seattle this year, and Brees got his arse handed to him BADLY twice.

Please go back and check the stats for NO against Seattle this year. Brees’ is a bum… threw for like 15 yards in the first half… seriously dude.

  135. And the talk continues! All season long everyone has basically ignored Manning’s all star cast of past superstars that was put together in hopes of him winning a superbowl. It was Manning ‘winning’, but when Denver loses? Hey, it wasn’t Manning, it was everyone else but. I’ve said it several times on this board, Eli might not have the arm Peyton has, but he’s a more complete QB. He had a fantastic year, but as the season wore on teams were getting used to the plays Denver was running. Don’t look for a repeat next year.

  136. Greatest regular season ever for a QB.

I would think that it parallels Tom Brady and the Patriots going 18-0 at one point but not able to swing it the super bowl….although a lot more competitive. Stuff happens.

  137. sorry media types, you can’t go on for 2 straight weeks about Peyton Manning is the greatest QB of all time, then he gets blown out in the biggest game of his career, and then suddenly it’s irrelevant to this legacy?

Your golden boy laid an egg now deal with the consequences, just like you would criticize any other QB!

  138. Favre probably feels better now as Peyton has taken the public opinion crown of biggest playoff choker. Actually Favre never really choked, he just made a bad decision or two after keeping his teams in the game when they shouldn’t have been. Robots like Manning fall apart if things break down as everything is so rehearsed and programmed. At least Favre tries to improvise and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but at least he has the balls to try.

I feel sorry for Peyton as the media builds him up as a messiah which no one can live up to. And he can continue to get his stats and pass Favre’s records to give him some consolation prize. He should retire, his arm is rubber and if he has to move or is off balance a bit, well, you saw what happened. to his throws.

  139. WTF are you talking about? Brady didn’t play Seattle this year, and Brees got his arse handed to him BADLY twice.

Please go back and check the stats for NO against Seattle this year. Brees’ is a bum… threw for like 15 yards in the first half… seriously dude.

    ——————————————————–
Hey Harveyredman check your facts and don’t just give lame opinions.

In the playoff game at Seattle, in wind and rain, Drew Brees threw for over 300 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions and had the ball at the 30 yard line in a position to tie when time expired.

Yes, he sucked in the regular season game vs. Seahawks, but he’s been much better in his playoff appearances then Manning has ever been….Check the record. In his Super Bowl run he beat three likely Hall of Famers (Warner, Favre and yes, Peyton Manning). Even in his losses (threw for over 400 yards and three TDs in a loss to Seattle in 2010 season, three for about 400 yards in loss to San Francisco in 2011.

Oh, let’s see Peyton beat Rex Grossman in his Super Bowl win….in a postseason where he threw for more interceptions than touchdowns.

  140. Did that supposed best show on turf kill the ratings? From the social media comments to the comments on these sites, it appeared most were tuned out of the most boring game ever.

  141. Manning’s always been a stat poster. How many of his 55TD’s were thrown inside the opponent’s three yard line? How many YAC resulted in his 5477 yards? The key is bump his receivers and then he’s done for b/c he can’t find another option unless it’s a check down and he can’t keep a play alive because he’s a 6’5″ statue in the pocket. Once he feels a rush he starts tap dancing and always loses the ball when he gets hit. Denver hasn’t look this bad since 55-10 when they didn’t even show up against the Montana-led Niners either.

At least he can drive his new Buick to the next Papa John’s endorsement commercial.

If you want to win a regular season game, ok he;’s your guy. But a playoff game? Take Brady.

  142. The ultimate choke was the year the Patriots won every game and even had their parade scheduled and LOST the Super Bowl.

  144. One game Peyton’s receiver looked Like the ones Brady has been playing with most of his life…
Now we know how Peyton would play given the same kind of receivers… Overrated Manning..

… And where does your same logic disaapear when you talk about Brady… he has done it better with limited resources…. i will take Brady anyday over Manning.

  146. “Unfortunately, a few of us guys sitting up here have gold jackets, and we hold people to a criteria unlike others”

“This is not good. What we saw tonight is not good. I can’t even tell you one thing that I saw that I can take home and say ‘man, that was alright.’ This was horrible. And it started from the first snap….”

“This is the problem. We praise Peyton — we should — for calling everything, taking his team to depths, broke every record known to man — then we give him all the credit. So now when they lose, it’s not his fault. Whose fault is it? It’s a team, right? But is it the team’s fault when you win? No, Peyton’s calling everything at the line.”

He exceeds Joe Montana? How awesome would that offense be today with the rules today?

…heard of salary Cap..that team will be missing half of their members if playing today so woulda coulda shoulda.??

  148. Why Steve Young was mentioned in this article is baffling. He went and won 1 Super Bowl. So has Drew Brees, who has better career numbers than him. So has Aaron Rodgers, who in 2 more years, will have better career numbers than him.

Here is the top 10 QB list. Don’t go mentioning guys who are not even on it.

    10. Drew Brees
    9. Troy Aikman
    8. Fran Tarkenton
    7. Dan Marino
    6. Brett Favre
    5. Peyton Manning
    4. John Elway
    3. Tom Brady
    2. Johnny Unitas
    1. Joe Montana

Of course there are arguments for Otto Graham, Len Dawson, Sonny Jurgensen, Sammy Baugh, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Bart Starr, or Bob Griese. But that is trying to equate football of a different era.

I would lump Steve Young more with Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Kurt Warner, and Ben Roethlisberger. Hall of Fame players, no doubt, but never going to crack a top 10 list.

  149. It was NOTHING he could do to surpass Joe Montana IMO and I agree disliking Joe and the 49ers with me being a Giants fans and us having our battles with them but Joe was the GREATEST…PERIOD! Put Joe in this ERA of Football in which Rules are put in place so that Offenses can score more points and QB’s can Shatter Records…as well as Elway, Marino and some of the other All Time Great QB’s and they would have Shattered their own Records. The Media is to blame, they set Peyton Manning up to fail with the sucking up all week and making it all about him and now that he FAILED they either want to turn on him or they want to blame OTHERS for his Failures. To the MEDIA…RESPECT ALL 11 Players ON BOTH SIDE of the Ball and please pull your heads off of the QB’s Butt. It is not all about the QB’s SORRY I know it hurts to believe that but it is NOT!

  150. To all of the posters on this web site, I have a question for anyone listening or reading comments on this web site, Does anyone remember back during the regular season and even in the play off’s how people were constantly talking about how Peyton was always constantly using the term “Omaha” when he was calling signals just to try and throw the defense’s off, remember? My question to any one out there is, do they think that the Seattle defense figured out just what “Omaha ” meant when Peyton would use it ? According to the score in the S B., I think that Peyton used the term once to often and Seattle figured just what it meant, now would you agree or disagree with that ? The only reason that I even brought it up was because I had not heard any one else on these difference web sites, say anything about it. So I just thought that I would mention it to see if any one else had any thing to say about it, ok?

  151. Peyton is not the greatest QB but if he had a better playoff record and say 3 Superbowl wins, I’d have to say he is. He has failed an awful lot in big games. The legion of adderal just lit him up. Thank God too because “Peyton is the greatest” talk would never end. That and Papa Johns commercials.

  152. Greg Norman is a great golfer who won major championships, but choked many majors away. Give me Jack or Palmer. They don’t choke. It takes miraculous shots like Watson’s or Jack’s or Palmer’s to defeat them when they were competing against each other in the majors because they didn’t fold and choke when the pressure was on. Just in Manning’s generation, Brady has never thrown a game sealing interception in a Super Bowl like Manning did against the Saints. Brady never had a QB rating that puts him next to the worst QB rating in the Super Bowl’s like Peyton did with a 25 and the worst one was Rex Grossman’s. Eli Manning drove his team to victory after Brady put his team in a position to win in the two Super Bowls that he lost. The empirical evidence tells us, that when the moment is the brightest and the QB has the chance to make himself a legend and drive his team to victory, Peyton Manning has not produced while Eli has. Down vote me all you want, but I would take Eli as my QB in a Super Bowl over Peyton EVERY TIME. 2-0 vs 1-2. And for the ESPN fans, I would take Curt Shilling or Dave Stewart or Andy Petite over Glavine and Maddux any day of the week and twice on Sunday when the pressure is the greatest. All those guys did in their generation was win in the post season, Glavine and Maddux did not. Glavine and Maddux weren’t even the best post-season pitchers on their team, let alone their generation. That honor went to John Smoltz. And I am a former Braves fan, who converted to the Rays when they came into existence, and I can tell you how disappointed Glavine and Maddux made us in many post seasons. Great regular season pitchers, but not great post-season pitchers. You are what your stats say you are, and you play to win the game. 2nd Place is 1st Loser and there is no getting around that.

  153. “‘We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes. Then we figured out the hand signals for a few of the route audibles in the first half.’

    –Richard Sherman

“He (Sherman) demonstrates the signs Manning used for various routes, and says he and his teammates were calling out plays throughout the game and getting them right. ‘Me, Earl [Thomas], Kam [Chancellor]… we’re not just three All-Pro players. We’re three All-Pro minds,’ Sherman says. ‘Now, if Peyton had thrown in some double moves, if he had gone out of character, we could’ve been exposed.’

  154. Sure Peyton only has one Super Bowl ring.

But shouldn’t he get extra credit for earning it by beating Rex Grossman and the Bears?

There really has never been a tougher offense go up against in a Super Bowl than that.

  155. rodgers419 says: Feb 2, 2014 10:47 PM

Best quarterback to ever play the game. The haters will die out and be nonexistent 15 years from now and it’ll be universally accepted. If he plays 2 more years he’ll break the passing yardage and passing touchdown records. Combine it with 5 league MVP’s and it’s a no brainer.
    ———————————-
Beyond laughable. This is a person that cannot be helped. Actual winning truly doesn’t matter to him. Comically, voted on MVP’s (voted on, like figure skating) actually means more than championship parades. Or, for that matter, even a .500…500!…career postseason record.
Instead, he believes (hopes) everyone will come to their senses in about 15 years.
    Hopeless.
BTW, in 15 years, Peyton’s “Tracy Porter Moment” will still be part of his legacy. The guy’s one of the All-Time greats, no doubt. But it was shocking to hear this “if he wins this SB he’ll be better than Montana, Unitas, Brady, etc..” narrative leading up to this game.
Really? He only needs two SB wins to pass all those other guys who have more?
Then they go out and put up 8 points.

  156. you have to be a physical team to beat a physical team and the Bronco’s are not a physical team, in fact not one team in the AFC would have been physical enough to beat the seahawks, they played a great game and dominated in every phase, as for Manning, his legacy is in tact he has a super bowl win and that alone should be enough, there are a lot of QB’s out there that are considered to be elite and have no super bowl wins, so all this talk if just BS, its a shame that the media makes it all about what the guy does on the field and blames him when they don’t win, he is not the only player out there its a team sport and the whole broncos team did not perform at all, congrats to the Hawks on a great season.

  157. Peyton manning certainly isn’t the best of all time. However, calling him a choke artist is a little extreme. He has a QB rating of 89 in the postseason, good for tenth best of all time. The Terry Bradshaw comparison is laughable in my opinion. TB has two more touchdowns than interceptions in his career. His four rings are great, but his 83 postseason qb rating is noticeably lower than Manning’s. Young isn’t better either. Like manning, Young is a near .500 QB in the postseason. Young’s postseason qb rating of 85 is also lower than Manning’s. Super Bowl/Playoff performance is a huge factor without question, but it isn’t the only one. If it was the sole factor, ELI Manning would be one ring away from Top-4 status.
Ask yourself, would Peyton’s legacy be more impressive had his 2006 Super Bowl been his only appearance, and his record be 1-0.
No, he is not the GOAT. Case closed. But I have a hard time putting anyone besides Montana, Brady, and Elway ahead of him.

    -Montana
    -Brady
    -Elway
    -Manning

… Side note: I keep seeing Unitas’s name popping up everywhere on here. Who the Hell on this message board is old enough to say they knowingly watched at least half of his career?

  158. Feel free to say Marino couldn’t win the big, because he didn’t. Don’t say Manning couldn’t win the big one. Because he did. Don’t try saying someone can’t win a big one when they already have.

  159. I mean, Trent Dilfer has as many rings as Peyton Manning and Steve Young. But really, Steve Young? The 49ers had to buy practically an entirely new team to put around him for him to win a Super Bowl.

  160. Funny thing…….I haven’t seen Manning on a Poppa John’s pizza ad since. Maybe he’s better at tossing dough balls than Super Bowl footballs.
Did Poppa dump him like yesterday’s stale pies?

  161. The only people who bring up the topic of Peyton Manning’s “legacy” are d-bag sportswriters, so they can get airtime and clicks.

Anyone with any common sense remembers that Manning has actually WON a Super Bowl.

I remember when that was the goal of playing football at the highest level.

Since when did winning MULTIPLE Super Bowls become the yardstick for greatness?

His legacy is intact, and nothing will change that.

The only reason we still discuss it is because he’s still playing.

After he retires, and goes into the HoF on the first ballot this nonsense will end.

  162. Can this end already? There will never be a clear cut “best of all time” quarterback. Manning is a class act, both on and off of the field and he has made the NFL better. He turned Indy into a football city, almost by himself, he makes players around him better, he has as good of a work ethic as anyone in the history of the league, he may be the most intelligent QB to ever play the game and he is well-liked by his teammates, which is a good measure of whether he is a team first guy. Last, but not least, the guy basically had to learn to throw a football, all over again, in his mid-thirties. He had zero arm strength after his latest neck surgery. I doubt if any of us will ever know just how hard the guy worked to even be back on the field. Manning will go into the Hall of Fame 5 years after he retires and nothing he does from here on out will change that. Hell, I’m a Chiefs fan, so I certainly don’t root for the guy, but I have allot of respect for him.

  163. another guy id like to throw into the mix is Jim Plunkett…no he didnt have great stats he didnt even have good stats ..but when its all said and done Plunks awkward style and his Houdini like escapability and somehow knowing when he can go to his bad of tricks ill take this professinal QB with his 8-2 playoff record and 2 super bowl rings over Manning Anytime “

  164. Do people really think quarterbacks just do everything and everyone else is a guy in a similar uniform? Even after seeing a Super Bowl won by a team that didn’t even need their QB to contribute?

  165. Who do we get when we say the greatest quarterbacks win big games? Well: Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Tom Brady.

These are the biggest championship winners from their respective decades (I can’t go back any farther, sorry).

Other “big winners” with two or more championships include Bob Griese, Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, John Elway, Ben Rothlisberger, Eli Manning.

Quarterbacks that have one ultimate win but deserve consideration as great?

Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees.

QB’s with no ultimate wins but were great in the regular season?

Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, Ken Anderson.

Looking at all these quarterbacks, it’s pretty easy to say that Peyton does NOT belong in the top five, but you really can’t keep him out of the top ten.

FWIW my top five, no order, are:

    Montana, Graham, Brady, Unitas, Staubach

    Six through nine, no order:

    Elway, Manning (Peyton), Aikman, Young.

And tied for ten I put Bradshaw and Griese.

My biases iare that I devalue quarterbacks that make a lot of mistakes in key situations, even though they can be absolutely brilliant otherwise, and I give extra credit to champions. That is why I like Griese and don’t put Marino or Favre in my top ten.

  166. Manning only won a Super bowl when the whole team played together – offense and defense.

This year Denver played like that the whole year and the only games they lost was when they relied too much on Manning being Manning.

Sure manning chokes in the big games, but the whole roster stunk it up in the Super Bowl – not just Manning

  167. He’s one of the All-Time great, no doubt. Just watch the guy play. And I agree; no matter what he did against Seattle that day, it wasn’t gonna make a difference in the outcome.
But two pick sixes in both his SB losses?
Either way, the one thing that really bugged me leading up to the game was this narrative put forward by the media (most of ’em anyway); Should Peyton win his 2nd SB, he will clearly, unquestionably and beyond a shadow of a doubt now be The Greatest QB in the History of the NFL.
    Wow, really? No kidding?
So forget Joe Montana, forget Unitas…and certainly forget Tom Brady. Peyton Manning now has two rings.
    End conversation and debate.

  168. Being objective…

Manning is one of the all time great QBs. That is a fact. The dude still makes me cringe when I see him line up against my team. I can’t say that about many QB’s I’ve ever seen play.

With that said, this loss really does take a lot of the shine off of Manning’s historically great season. This wasn’t a 34-31 loss, this was a beatdown in every aspect. When you see a QB get beaten down like that it puts their whole season in a completely different light.

In fact 15 years from now I don’t think many people will look back at this season from Manning as a historical benchmark for QB greatness at all. They’ll just remember the loss and the way the loss happened. It’s too bad but that’s the way it goes.

  169. In addition to poor stats in 2006 on the way to winning the SB, it’s the only SB that Peyton’s played in with a QB on the other side who was a bigger dumpster fire than he was (hello Rex Grossman and your 3 picks).

  170. chicagogiantsfan =

Troy Aikman did have the class of the league in offensive line. But let’s compare over all offenses. Aikman had Micheal Irvin, Alvin Harper, Jay Novacek, and Emmit Smith out of the backfield every now and again.

Peyton Manning had a superb offensive line. Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Stokley, Dallas Clark, Ben utecht, Anthoney Gonzalez (for two years), Edgerrine James (who was by far a superior pass catcher than Emmit Smith), who was then replaced by Joseph Addai (who was pretty good out of the back field.

Peyton Manning had a vastly superior supporting cast then Troy Aikman. THERE is MY litmus test for the fact that Troy Aikman was far superior to Peyton Manning, ESPECIALLY in big games, and Aikmans 3 superbowl rings to Peytones 1 when Manning had a far greater team to win with.

  171. As I read the comments, I notice it is extremely easy to spot the blind Peyton Manning lemming fans, they ignore the overwhelming cold hard facts and make up excuse after excuse for him,

  172. If Peyton is such a good sportsman why would he not shake hands with Drew or congratulate the winners on the field after the Super Bowl. Suck it and be a man.

  173. Brady hasn’t done much it says in the article. How about driving down the field to get his team in field goal range with the superbowl on the line so that Adam could kick manageable field goals to win….just disregard that and say oh it was the kicker who won the game…ridiculous. 5 superbowl appearances and 2 of THEM came down to one play each that prevented New England from winning. Peyton is terrible on the playoffs and he got BLOWN OUT in his third attempt…..regular season Peyton is a better quarterback but greatness isn’t measured in the regular season. It’s the playoffs that matter….8 one and dones. Losing playoff record is not a measure of greatness. It’s a measure of when it really matters he chokes every single time but once. Even eli is more accomplished than him with 2 squeaker victories over the most consistent (or best) overall team in football since Brady took over for Bledsoe. Do you play for records or do you play for championships…when it really matters Peyton matters not
