Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell avoided offering contracts longer than two years when was steering the team through free agency last year because it was the first year of a new regime and they wanted the flexibility to adjust the roster as needed.

Things are going to be a bit different the second time around. Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union reports that Caldwell indicated an openness to deals stretching three or four years once free agency opens next month as the Jaguars move into the next phase of roster building. There’s also a willingness to spend a bit more, although the team isn’t expected to hand out huge deals.

Caldwell said that he plans to be aggressive in the opening days of free agency, targeting the players that the Jags have identified as top priorities, before sitting back and waiting for prices to drop for other players of interest.

“We need to let the market settle and see where an opportunity presents itself to get some guys a week or two later,” Caldwell said.

Stellino predicts guard and center will be at the top of the team’s shopping list because of both need and the fact that they tend to come with gentler price tags than players at some other positions.
