The Lions and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh are expected to talk about a contract extension this offseason and it looks like Jay Z may have a seat at the table.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the rapper and his fledgling Roc Nation agency are expected to have “some kind of connection” to Suh, who parted ways with agents Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes in January. It’s not clear if they would be negotiating Suh’s contracts, as they do for Jets quarterback Geno Smith, or if they’ll be handling the marketing side of things, as they do for CAA client Victor Cruz.
Suh has a salary of $12.55 million for 2014 and is set to count $22.4 million against the cap, making an extension would be the likeliest path to getting that cap number down to a more reasonable figure. With a voidable final year on the contract in 2015 and such a big number sitting in the way of other moves, Suh has a pretty good hand to play in negotiations.
We’ll find out in the coming weeks and months how he plays that hand and how Jay Z and company are planning to help him play it.
