Doug Marrone not sure if Kevin Kolb plans to play in 2014

The Bills started the preseason with a quarterback decision to make between E.J. Manuel and Kevin Kolb, but the competition came to a halt in August when Kevin Kolb was placed on injured reserve because of a concussion.

It was the latest in a series of concussions for Kolb, raising questions about whether or not he’d be able to continue his career in 2014. He’s got a contract with the Bills, but coach Doug Marrone said Friday that the answer remains unknown.

“He’s under contract and I’m not aware of really what exactly is going on right now, whether he’s planning to come back, whether he’s not going to come back,” Marrone said during an interview with WGR 550, via ESPN.com. “I have not been informed of anything to that nature.”

Kolb is set to count $3.6 million against the cap in 2014 and has a roster bonus of $1 million due on the third day of the new league year. Both of those things make is hard to see him back with the same contract even if there weren’t real doubts about his ability to continue playing.
