Munnerlyn “shocked” by lack of contact from Panthers

As Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn heads toward free agency for a second straight year, he’s heard nothing from the team about a new contract.  And he’s surprised.

Well, more than surprised.

“It’s been real quiet, which is shocking,” Munnerlyn told Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.  “I don’t know what’s going on.  I’m just waiting.  I guess they’re going to let everyone hit free agency.  I don’t think they’ve talked to anybody, yet — not even Greg Hardy.  That’s a shocker to me.  I guess they’re going to see what the market value of people is and go from there.”

The Panthers still have three weeks before the agents for the team’s free agents officially can talk to other teams.  (Unofficially, the process starts this week, at the Scouting Combine.)  Last time, Munnerlyn rejected a three-year deal from the Panthers before looking around and eventually signing a one-year deal.

“I think I had one of my best years,” Munnerlyn said.  “And I think my market value will be a little bit better than last year.  I want to stay with the Carolina Panthers because that’s the team that drafted me.  I love the organization, and I feel that’s the best team that fits me personality-wise.  I love the coaching staff.  I want to stay there.”

Three other key defensive backs also are due to hit free agency — safety Mike Mitchell, safety Quintin Mikell, and cornerback Drayton Florence.  With only so many dollars to go around, the Panthers will have some difficult decisions to make.

Still, the lack of communication shouldn’t trouble anyone yet.  Especially not Hardy, since it’s possible no communication will happen until after the Panthers apply the franchise tag.

  1. Munnerlyn is an undersized average corner…he had a good year last year but because of our good front 7 a lot of our db’s had above average years last year, he almost cost us the Dolphin game..he shouldn’t be shocked considering he turned down the 3 year deal he was offered..alot of FA corners this year..he wont get as much cash as he is expecting and him and Lafell can hit the road because they are average players at best

  2. Everybody, listen to me,
    and return me, my ship.

I’m your captain, I’m your captain,
    though I’m feeling mighty sick.

I’ve been lost now, days uncounted,
and it’s months since, I’ve seen home.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
    or am I all alone?

    If you return me,
    to my home port,

I will kiss you, Mother Earth
Take me back now, take me back now,
to the port, of my birth.

  3. the panthers have some tough decisions ahead. with big contracts looming for Cam and Luke, and possibly Hardy, if i were Gettleman, I’d only bring Captain back if the price is right.

  4. >Come to green bay, we play clown music at our practices!

wasn’t funny any of the other times either.

  5. Captain, you are an okay nickel corner and that’s about it. We have bigger issues than you. Marty Hurney’s cap Hell is the gift that keeps on giving. We must sign Greg Hardy and then pay peanuts to everyone else or what’s left…

  6. It’s pretty clear that Gettleman wants to send an unencumbered message to the city and the team, that there’s a NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN. The last GM Hurney left a financial mess, so the new guy is trying to look smart.

I guess he calls himself playing hardball, which could backfire. As a Panthers fan, I want our current players to feel wanted and I don’t want coach Rivera to feel undermined or sabotaged by a guy who wants to put his stamp on the team for POWER sake.

Take care of your guys. At least let them know they are priority, then maybe you get a hometown discount. Ignore them and act like you have all the leverage and they bolt for being disrespected or you sign a disgruntled guy, who can’t wait to get out.

  7. The Dolphins game he was burned badly but that happens to every DB in their career. Champ was destroyed by Torrey Smith and Champ is a future HOF. The most important part is how Munnerlyn came back and after that game he came back pretty good.

Also he’s not really undersized, he’s 5’9. That sounds short until you look around the league and realize that for CBs are normally between 5’9 and 5’11. Yeah that surprised me too as somebody who is 6’3. The cameras make them look a lot taller

  8. Jimmy Smith + Lardarius Webb = best corner tandem …. After the Legion of Boom… Yes I will acknowledge they are the best

    Go Ravens 2014
    *First Class Organization*
2x Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens
Ravens = Only team with a 1.00 Super Bowl winning percentage (2-0)
Joe Flacco Super Bowl XLVII MVP

    these are just facts guys

  9. There’s plenty of room in our Defensive backfield Munnerlyn. Come sign with N.O. and you could play opposite Keenan Lewis. He’ll definitely start in the Saints secondary……

  10. @doctorrustbelt nice GFR reference. I believe captain wants to stay closer to home with the Panthers because he thinks their team is some kinda wonderful

  11. The Steelers cast such an immense shadow over the league. There’s no wonder why we are so widely envied. We are superior. We have six Lombardis. What do you have ☹?

Sadest name I’ve seen from a troll on here. I feel sorry for actual Steelers fans that guys like this make look bad.

  12. I was going to come up with a joke that the Panthers were shocked at his lack of contact with the opposing team’s players when he attempted tackles…but he was third on the team with 52, led the team with passes defended, had 3 sacks which was second to only Mitchell of the secondary, and picked off 2 passes. To me that’s a nice little season there.

Correct me if I am wrong though…but I am not exactly seeing a whole lot of news about other teams signing their free agents yet. I know that my home team Ravens are only supposedly in discussions with Suggs about restructuring his deal…but other than that it is pretty quiet.

Have faith “Munny” Munnerlyn, if the Panthers don’t, I am sure there is a team out there that will boldy predict…”Our team and the Cap’n can make it happen!”

  13. Fake Panther fans saying “we have bigger issues”

Captain Munnerlyn was the Panthers best DB last year. A team, if I need to remind you, was 2nd best in the league.

Did you losers forget that Captain Munnerlyn has had more interceptions for touchdowns than anyone in the league?

Getting Hardy signed is imperative, but finding a way to keep Captain and Mike Mitchell are equally important.

  14. Well when the Panthers have 21 unrestricted free agents, and only $11-13 Million in cap space, that is never good. One good season, and it will be ruined because of poor cap management.

  15. The comments on this site used to be for the most part either thought provoking or well articulated and well thought out. It’s turning into troll central. It’s great that you have an unhealthy obsession with your team , really I’m happy for you, but why not wait until a post about your team? The sad part is the trolls on here are raving about teams that aren’t even relevant. Vikings steelers redskins. A big thank you to the commenters that put serious comments on here, I enjoy reading them and arguing with you. To the other clowns, go to Espn or something this site is for real football fans.

  16. Got to see him live in Tampa on Thursday night game. Kid can fly!! Sign with Bucs Captain, bring Hardy with you.

  17. Siggtacular ,Jets, Saints, and Tampa Bay Buc’s all 1-0 or a 1.00(or 100) Super Bowl Winning Percentage.
Wrong about that and wrong about First Class Organization, unless your referring to the execs not flying coach as they sold the city of Cleveland out.
Enjoy the past, Bengals own the future.

What Siggtacular meant was only team with multiple SB appearances that has never lost. Jets,Saints, and Bucs have only been once. As for the Bungles, congrats on winning the AFCN. Sucks that your QB can’t win a playoff game 3 years running.

  19. Captain did have a very good year last year, but the dramatic improvement of the front 7 helped. Remember the last game of 2011? We had no D-line and Brees & the Saints torched us for about 40 points and a zillion yards. This year, we had 2 excellent rookie DTs and a healthy stud MLB, and the whole secondary benefited.

I do think Captain is a good player and can contribute on a championship team, but he’s not quite good enough to spend the whole game against the opponent’s best WR. I hope he re-signs for a modest amount and we can get some super CBs in the draft. Gettleman worked under Jerry Reese as Reese built 2 Super Bowl winners, so I think Gettleman gets a long leash in trying to build up talent on the roster while cleaning up the cap mess the newspaper writer turned GM left him.

  20. I’m not shocked. Munnerlyn DID HAVE a pretty good season last year, but he is an average corner, and that’s it. There’s nothing spectacular about his abilities. Once in a while, he’ll make a play that’s good enough for somebody’s highlight reel, like maybe a pick six, (that doesn’t happen often by any stretch),or a successful blitz. There are definitely worse corners in the league. Munnerlyn is worth keeping, but for minimal money…MAYBE a mil for 2014.

  21. munnerlyn had a good season , BUT HE GETS BURNT ALOT. pantherfan 40 do you think we should resign munnerlyn?? my answer is only at the right price and basically only if we need to . PANTHER FANS ask your self this question do u trust munnerlyn having to go up against roddy white julio twice , colston twice , aj green , vincent jax twice and megatron no offence to munnerlyn but tht would give me a heart attack , i feel we need to draft a shutdown cb in the first round and get one via freeagency i dont trust munnerlyn enough to go vs big time wrs
