Colts running back Trent Richardson had a tough 2013 campaign.

Now comes news that the third-year back from Alabama reportedly had shoulder surgery once the season concluded.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Richardson had a shoulder “scope” this offseason. Rapoport indicated the surgery was not serious.

Richardson struggled in his first season with the Colts, rushing for just 2.9 yards per carry in the regular season. In the postseason, he carried four times for one yard and lost a fumble in the wild-card round win vs. the Chiefs. Richardson was not listed on the injury report with a shoulder ailment during the 2013 season, and he was active for all 16 games with Indianapolis after coming over in a trade from Cleveland in September.

Richardson does not turn 23 until July, and he had shown some flashes of the talent that made him the No. 3 overall pick in 2012. However, he hasn’t lived up to expectations just yet.
