Jason Licht: Buccaneers “absolutely” looking for a veteran quarterback

Although he had complimentary things to say about Mike Glennon, Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said last week that the team has to consider quarterbacks with the seventh overall pick and that he’d like to see the team add a veteran quarterback to the roster this offseason.

He’s got support from the team’s general manager on the latter desire. As Jason Licht retools the roster this offseason, he’ll be looking for an experienced quarterback to compete with and possibly replace Glennon as the team’s starter.

“Absolutely,” Licht said, via the Tampa Tribune. “New coach, new regime, you can’t just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter. You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody. So, that’s what we’ll be looking for.”

Whether they are doing it for Glennon or someone else, the veteran options available right now fit more into the category of placeholders than long-term solutions. Josh McCown, Michael Vick and Matt Cassel are the top names on the free agent market and Matt Schaub is expected to hit the market when the Texans start making moves for 2014.
