Bears re-sign Derrick Martin, Taylor Boggs

Cornerback Charles Tillman, defensive tackle Henry Melton and kick returner Devin Hester are some of the bigger names on the list of potential Bears free agents and there’s no word on any imminent deals bringing them back to Chicago, but the Bears did bring back a couple of players further down the order.

The team announced Monday that they have re-signed safety Derrick Martin and center Taylor Boggs.

Boggs, who played one game for the team in 2013, was set to become an exclusive rights free agent so the Bears were only losing him if they decided they no longer wanted him on the team. Boggs may not be a leading candidate to take over if starting center Roberto Garza leaves as a free agent, but he’ll presumably be in the mix for a depth role.

Martin played seven games for the Bears last season after signing with the team in the wake of Tillman’s season-ending injury. Martin mostly saw action on special teams and that will be the surest path to a spot on the team again next season for the eight-year veteran.
