Cardinals negotiating with Matt Shaughnessy

The Cardinals had a strong defense last season and they’ve made no bones about their desire to bring linebacker Karlos Dansby back to be part of next year’s unit as well.

Dansby isn’t the only linebacker they’d like to see remain in town. Rich Rosa, the agent for Matt Shaughnessy, told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic that he’s been talking to the team about a new deal for Shaughnessy.

“They are actively trying to re-sign him,” Rosa said. “He wants to be there, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Shaughnessy played in all 16 games and started 12 in his first season with the Cardinals. He did his best work against the run for the league’s stingiest run defense, which makes it no surprise that they’d like to have him back as part of the effort to remain stout in a tough division.

Shaughnessy’s return would be nice for the Cardinals, but Dansby’s would be more impactful. Somers adds that there’s nothing new to report on that front, however.
