Matt Cassel re-ups with the Vikings for two more years

With Chad Henne breaking the seal on the backup-quarterbacks-for-teams-that-need-starters market today, it’s fair game for the rest of them.

Thus, the Vikings have held onto Matt Cassel, as Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports Cassel has agreed to a new two-year deal.

The process was doubtless helped along by new coach Mike Zimmer’s realization that he needed some degree of stability, and as bizarre as it might seem, Cassel presented just that.

As with Henne in Jacksonville, the key will be what the Vikings do to fill the spot above Cassel on the depth chart.

If Zimmer is intent on hanging onto the Christian Ponder experiment (or wants to start Cassel), the move isn’t a very good one in a vacuum.

But in the presence of the right starter, Cassel has proven a solid piece to have around. Like Henne with the Jaguars, the Vikings played their best football last year with Cassel under center.

Keeping him from getting there too often will determine how much progress they’re going to make.

  1. Matt Cassel just said good-bye to any hope of hoisting a Vince Lombardi trophy (at least for the next two years).

Maybe he likes playing for a last-place team. He sure better get used to it.

  2. Bad news for Dolphins fans , because that pretty much assures Michael Vick will be signed by the Jets. I hope the Vikings get pounded this season ; Cassel will never play well for any NFL team , other than the Patriots.

  3. But, but, Adrian Peterson wanted Michael Vick! It’s a transitional move as the Vikes move to build a contender. Contrary to what some may say on here, Vikes still have another year or two before they can challenge the Packers and the Bears. Those that say the Vikes are ready for prime time might say SKOL, but in reality those suckers just need to go back to SCHOOL.

  4. Vikings might as well move a few miles north and join the CFL. At least they would have a chance to win something meaningful.

  5. Ponder and Cassel! Maybe Freeman. Maybe Sanchez. Peterson wants Vick.

Benny Hill music will be played all season long!

  6. Best backup in the league. But he’s not a starter and I really hope we didn’t pay him like one!

  7. Spielman and new coach Zimmer have been watching tape people, and they know that they have zero chance to compete with that defense! Too many holes to fill. They’ll be drafting defense early and often.
Improving to 6-10 is the goal

  8. There are a lot worse QBs on NFL rosters that has never had the success Vince Young has had in the NFL… (Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobil). Vince will soon turn 31 years old.. He has a career winning record of 31-19.. He has really only “played” for 2 teams (Titans & Eagles)…
I hope he gets another chance even if it’s third string…

  9. Anything is better than Ponder….and I’m a Vikes fan saying that. I wish Ponder the best and hope Zygi deals him draft day in a deal to move up a few picks in Rd 2 or 3…

  10. Rumor is it’s a 2, year $10 million deal. Spielman really out did himself this time. I have no faith in Spielmans ability to find a viable QB.

  11. Could be worse viking fans, turd Thompson could be pulling the strings.

In case you haven’t been around green bay has lost in the first round of the playoffs for 5 straight years.

  12. Do the Vikings actually have fans? Why root for that moribund group? Your owner exploited your state and wanted to leave for greener pastures. Not that I can blame him, but still–what a pathetic situation!

  13. It’s a good move. Cassel fits Turners style of a vertical passing game. And it was the first piece of the puzzle in a three year plan. Piece two is to draft a QB in round 1 or 2, and maybe round 5 or 6 as well. The defense will also be upgraded dramatically. Vikings play a last place schedule this year, so a wild card spot is possible. Then year 3 under Zim and the new franchise QB will be the real deal.

  14. Unless he is backing up a REAL QB coming in , Of course the Viking would make this move , After all they are the Vikings , bwahahaha , Just add this team to the long list of franchise you really could give 2 rats know what about.Poor A.P!! he is in one of those miserable marriages some of us know all too well about.

  15. Love all the hate from the Packer fans who love their history. The Vikings may be down now, but the Packer fans forget from 1973 to 1988, they had 1 winning season.

Somehow they don’t remember that but remember those 9 championships when there were 10 teams in the league.

    Let’s look at the facts:

-2009 – Packers lose in the first round to the Cardinals.
    – 2010 – Packers win Super Bowl.
    – 2011 – Packers lose in the second round to the eventual Super Bowl champions.
    – 2012 – Packers lose in the second round to the eventual NFC champions (after beating the pathetic Vikings in the first)
    – 2013 – Packers lose in the first round.

Meanwhile, the entire pathetic Vikings franchise still has one fewer Super Bowl ring than Tarvaris Jackson.

  17. Terribo just terribo…Now Peterson will want to be traded and I cannot disagree with him. I think they just said good bye to ALL of the free agents that were even contemplating signing here. Now Speilman has to go… Sad when your teams mantra is WWCD… What would Cleveland do…

The 13-time World Champion Green Bay Packers won their 4th Superbowl in February of 2011. Allow me to do the math for you.

    2014 – 2011 = 3 years

    3 years 0 Superbowl victories

  19. NFL Network has deemed March dynasty month celebrating the greatness of the Packers, Patriots, Steelers, Cowboys and 49ers. They will be airing the Vikings dynasty special starting on March 32.

  20. Cassel is a pro back up. He took the pats to 11-5 when Tommy went down. He’s not a franchise starter but as a back up he’s one if the best in the business.

  21. The Vikings need to draft for defense. If they can pick up a LB,CB, or a DE or all 3 in the first 2 rounds by trading out of the 8th spot, they could probably get Jimmy Garofalo in the 3rd round. By week 7, he will be our franchise QB. Strong arm and quick release will make him the best choice for Minnesota.

  22. I will like this only if it means ponder is released. Otherwise, once again, the Vikings will just stockpile quarterbacks that could barely make an nfl roster

  23. Cancel the new stadium… move team to LA… like the lakers yrs ago. kevin love going there too

  24. having someone like him is nice considering even if you drafted a QB you’d still have ponder as your back up >.< and you dont want they guy teaching your kid anything!!

  25. You people who think this is a good signing are in need of some serious meds. This guy is a below average QB.

We are talking Vikings here so good signing!! & good luck with that.

  26. As I recall, there were lots of armchair “experts” who thought Cassel was nuts for opting out of his contract to test free agency. I thought and said at the time that it was a win-win situation for him because a job with the Vikes would still be there to fall back on.

    Well played Matt, well played.

  27. The faces change but nothing changes in Minne-ha-ha land.

The Vikings: 13 times NFL champions. Ooops, sorry, that’s the Green Bay Packers.

  28. So Matt basically would not play for the hapless and tasteless Vikings unless they included millions and millions more to offset all the pain and suffering.

  29. If you want, you can have Weeden too. He’s like an old, virus-ridden computer, very slow at processing information.

  30. Makes sense all around, provided Vikes didn’t sink much cap into him. Cassel will be a better fit in a Norv Turner offense, and gets a 16-32 game audition for one more NFL QB contract (likely the last of his career). Ponder can hold the clipboard for a year till his contract is done then vanish from the league.

The Vikes, meanwhile, bought themselves 3 drafts & 2 FA periods worth of chances to find a legit franchise QB. MN fans all crossing their fingers that the next one isn’t an ill-advised reach like Ponder was.

  31. Matt Cassel is GARBAGE. It amazes me how these dude qb’s can keep a job and make decent money. The state of the starting NFL QB is truly influx, besides the top four five qb’s the rest are GARBAGE. I would rather save money and play a young rookie than to give Cassel $5 mil per. The results will probably be the same with the rook going through a learning curve and Cassel just being GARBAGE. And to the person who stated Cassel is a nice fit for Norv Turners Offense, I have to dis-agree with you on that. Norv likes a strong running attack with play action passing deep down the field. Cassel is a dinker and a dunker ( eg., Alex Smith) his down the field accuracy is atrocious. He is best in a 5-15 yard window, that is it. And it is all over if he gets a tad bit of pressure.

  32. Big Vikings Fan here, honestly this is probably best for MN. I would have loved Vick in MN in maybe 03′ but not now, not playing outside with a questionable pass blocking offensive line. Cassel isnt the answer, but he should bridge the gap at least until we find something better. If Cassel does nothing at all at least he will give people the chance to see if our WRs can actually play. The tide is changing and the key to this turnaround seems to start with Zimmer. Can’t be anything but optimistic!

  33. Whew! This means there’s no chance of seeing Ponder this season — which is something to rejoice! Cassel deserves another chance, after being jerked around by that clown show coaching staff last year. He’ll provide a nice stop-gap for our drafted QB. Meanwhile, Ponder will be relegated to 3rd string and live out the final year of his contract as the invisible QB that never plays.. just like it should be.

  34. All these critics slamming the Vikings for getting the best possible option they could on the market. Who else was there? Vick? Really? Schaub? Maybe, maybe not. It’s not like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning was on the market.

Cassel isn’t a star. Nobody thinks he is. He’s a game manager. He can make deep throws and is functional. He can keep the Vikings in the game on offense as long as the defense is doing their job.

Why all the critics? Don’t you have anything else better to do? Grow up.

  35. The Vikings have lost 10 or more games in 3 of the last 4 years. This outburst of ineptitude has solidified this hapless and tasteless franchise as the league doormat. Like Rodney Dangerfield, they get no respect. Except they’re fatter in MN than Rodney.

Meanwhile the Packers are diligently preparing to once again contend for another World championship. So all is right in the NFL world.

As the late great Bud Grant once famously said, “It’s a beautiful world – if you’re not in MN”. And Bud would know.

  36. “thevikesarebest says: Mar 7, 2014 8:31 PM

He knows he will be getting a ring by staying with the vikings.SKOL”

The only ring Ponder will be getting by staying with the Vikings is the one he goes and buys for himself to celebrate his continued employment with probably the only team that would have him.
