More teams are clamoring for Verner

Soon, it could be easier to list the teams that aren’t interested in Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, who previously pegged the Jets, Vikings, and Rams as having interest in the No. 10 player on PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100 list, now reports that the Lions, Steelers, and Giants also have interest in Verner.

A fourth-round pick in 2010 from UCLA, Verner has started every game the last two years, becoming one of the best young corners in the NFL in the process.  The Titans opted not to apply the franchise tag to Verner, which would have paid him a lot of money on a one-year deal.  It now appears that Verner will be getting a lot more money on a multi-year deal, from someone.

Of course, it’s one thing for teams to show interest and another for that interest to become a contract offer. Teams that plan to box out the other contenders for Verner will need to have the cap space to do it.

The Steelers don’t.  But it costs no cash or cap space to show interest.

  1. It’s as easy as Steelers cut Ike Taylor, CB. VOILA! Cap Space. Now they have $7 million to sign a younger better CB.

  2. I bet Verner’s agent is close buddies with Jim Wyatt. If the agent isn’t the one leaking this info., then how would a reporter get it? I think this is more “hype” than anything, although I’m sure there are a number of teams that would like to add a Pro Bowl corner.

  3. Raiders have the cap space and the deperate need but from what I read tey seem to be on a twenty year rebuilding project that is only going into year 12 so not ready to go after quality players yet –not even the ones they manage to draft

  4. I loved this guy in Tennessee, I hope he gets a great contract from someone, he deserves one! He’s a nice guy and a great athlete.

  5. And yet Reggie just sits on that $66 million dollars…guess he’s going to wait until all the top free agents are signed and then over pay fringe players to one year deals…again.

“The Steelers don’t. But it costs no cash or cap space to show interest.”

WTH is that supposed to mean?

Read above it. They are saying Pitt doesn’t have enough cap space currently to make big plays for top free agents, especially $10-$12mil for a top corner. It also implies if they were to be serious, they would have to create more room.

    Not that hard.

  7. I love the editorializing. Teams are CLAMORING for Verner! Its a virtual bidding RIOT!!! The interest can’t possibly be that serious. There are probably a few teams that have made polite inquiries, but only one or two serious bidders. Probably the Rams and Vikings, since there’s the connections in both places (Gregg Williams and Jerry Gray).

  8. Him and Rhodes will make the vikings a top ten defense and the vikings new CB coach was a former titan CB coach last year so I wouldn’t be surprised if he come to the Vikings and did I mentioned the Vikings are 40 million under the cap

  9. Used to think steelers fans were the bigest trolls ever. I was wrong . Seattle deserves that distinction . at least the steelers have the rings thing to argue about. Seattle’s D doesn’t stand up to that of the late steelers , bears or 2000 ravens. not even close

  10. Not even close ea11??
Many people who follow football feel like that was one of the best defenses’ of all time, sure looked like it in the final vs who? Oh ya the best offense…..bitter much?

  11. From a distance it just sounds like ambient crowd noise, but as you get closer you can make out “We want Verner! We want Verner! We want Verner!”.

Oakland has been down that FA road before. DeAngelo Hall, Gabril Wilson, that loser receiver from Denver, Larry Brown, etc. Be careful what you wish for.

  13. Well for us Raider fans it looks like even with the cap space we still gone go after other teams players off practice squad LOL !!! I laugh to keep from being upset it is what it is. Big Reggie spend some change OakTown got it bring in some ball players some young talent not some1 like champ bailey I wouldn’t be surprised . Talking about he brings the type of leadership this team needs . .

  14. one of the best d’s of all time. you have to be kidding. I love Defense so I am not bitter. Football is fun to watch. But the constant clamoring for Seattles D (majority home grown) is out of hand. Asky any football fan who is at least 30 years old. no way that D could hand with the three i stated, not to take away their brilliant SB performance , that was awesome .This is not blind hatred bieng spewed, just my opinion

  15. Vikings have plenty of cap space to pay him, Zimmer is anxious to file the holes on the Vikings defense, Verner knows the Vikings d-back coach from Tennessee…. he’ll be a Viking on Tuesday at 4pm.

The Vikings and steelers are sad to watch. It’s just pathetic.

Says the guy whose team’s history before 2010 was completely mired in persistent, relentless mediocrity.
