The Bears have looked to Green Bay for safety help.

The club said Wednesday it had reached a one-year contract with Packers safety M.D. Jennings.

The 25-year-old Jennings started all 16 games at free safety for the Packers in 2013, notching 74 tackles and defending one pass. However, he was not tendered as a restricted free agent.

Jennings (6-0, 187) could provide competition for Chris Conte, the Bears’ starting free safety a season ago. The Bears also added Giants safety Ryan Mundy on Tuesday, signaling their desire to help a position that had its problems in 2013.

  1. All these teams getting minor FAs while Denver is getting the best CB, the best SS, and the best DE.

Thanks for not settling for mediocrity John, your the best.

  2. I have to tell you Bear fans if you are hoping this is a replacement for Conte good luck. That’s why he was never tendered.

  3. Jennings is the only player in history to catch a game saving interception…and still lose.

  4. I didn’t like this move too much at first but with three quality safeties in their secondary not including Major Wright? The Bears have depth. Championships are made possible through the depth of your team. From 1 to 53 they’re all the same.

  5. So the Packers are Jennings-less.

Greg went last season to the Vikes; now M.D. to the Bears.

  6. The Bears give out 1 year contracts like candy at Halloween. He should approach this as an opportunity to win the job. Otherwise, there is no guarantee he will even be with the Bears by Week 1.

  7. MD Jennings was terrible. Consider that the Packers need help at safety and they didn’t even give him a tender.

  8. I have no clue if this guy is any good, but for obvious reasons, I’m still glad the Vikings didn’t sign him.

  9. Well, another body. He’s competition. He has at least played games as a starter. Emery will likely draft a S, so he and Mundy are space holders.

As for a previous poster about Denver, yes Talib, Ward and Ware are huge marquee additions but it’s about the salary cap. Denver is obviously pushing all its chips into the middle of the table for this year. Three years from now, in spite of a larger cap, you could be looking at slashing alot of payroll.

  10. Spielman! You let me down!

A Packers cast-off slipped right through your fingers and landed with… a division rival. Ouch.

Redeem yourself by doing some dumpster diving and signing one of those green and gold gems. It’s not too late.

  11. Lol, signing a packer defenseman is like going to Walmart and taking the guy stocking shelves. Then again they gave Samantha sheilds 80 million in guaranteed money!

  12. no matter where he goes, he will be the guy who couldnt cover golden tate in that game winning TD catch against the Seahawks.

  13. It takes 2-3 weeks for the de-brainwashing to be complete just so you know.

Good for both Jennings’, green and yellow is the color of vomit

  14. The only way this news could have gotten any better is if he had signed with the Vikings.

Jennings was by far and away, the worst starting Safety in the NFL last year. Heck, among all DB’s he rank in the 150’s. Think about that all you math majors, there are only 32 teams and 4 starting DB’s per team = 128. So to rank as far down as 158, you have to be worse than almost every team’s 5th DB. He was so bad, even the Vikings weren’t interested. I don’t what the Bears are thinking if they are thinking at all.

  15. Enjoy !!
Wait till you see his signature move where he wanders around the field looking around for someone to tell him where he’s supposed to be as the ball flies over his head.

His best play EVER was the “Fail Mary”

  16. The guys is too short and too light do do any good. He also lacks the basic instinct of a good safety. Thanks again Chicago for taking our you know what.

  17. Part of GB’s recent very bad run (and bad luck) at the Safety position. They need to get one in the first 3 rounds of the draft even if Hyde is being moved there.

  18. How long until EDS is gone too? With over 30M in cap space, TT needs to give everyone that bought stock a 50.00 refund…

  19. Worse than Conte? Easily. Both are three year vets. Conte has had a little more playing time but not much.

Conte can at least make a play – 6 interceptions, 18 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovered.

Jennings – 1 interception, 2 passes defensed, 1 fumble recovered in his entire career! That’s a good GAME by some safeties. That is what he totaled in 47 games.

Jennings was a complete black hole of play-making ability. I’ve never seen anything like it.

  20. Remember now, according to Cheeseheads, Brett Favre always sucked too… after he signed with Minnesota. They drink nothing but sour grape Haterade in Green Bay.

That said, the Packers don’t have any good defensive players at all, so I can’t imagine this guy is a difference maker. But he did start 16 games last year, so at least he’ll have some decent information to share…

  21. He doesn’t have the size or height of a safety.

And he doesn’t make up for it with speed or coverage skills.

Bears made a good pick up with Houston thou.

  22. This signing is an indictment of the quality of the Bears’ safeties last year. One thing that cannot be overlooked, however, is the lack of defensive line play by the front four that put an extra burden on these safeties. The fact is, Chris Conte and Major Wright are horrid at putting themselves into position to tackle! Wright wasn’t the worst cover guy, but Chris Conte……… just watch the last game of the year against Green Bay. Enough said!

  23. Safety needs to be 6’2”? He has plenty of height and plenty of speed. Him not being very good is more because of his Benjamin beuford blue level of intelligence.

  24. Can’t believe how many stupid comments are here. M.D. Jennings is not a great player, but he is a upgrade over either of our starting safeties from last season. It’s not even close according to any of the respected sites that rank players. Conte has a -15.8 rating, while Jennings has a -6.5. That is a significant difference. Throw in that Mundy has a +.2 and Major Wright was at a league worst -27.4. So the Bears safeties went from a overall -43.2 to a -6.3. So anyone arguing that the Bears did not improve themselves at the position is a football moron. It is still a weak spot on the Bears, and hopefully they upgrade it through the draft. But make no mistake about it, the Bears improved themselves at that position.
