Bears add DE Willie Young

The Bears have again looked to an NFC North rival with an eye on fixing a leaky defense.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, Lions defensive end Willie Young has reached a three-year, $9 million agreement with Chicago. The contract contains $3.95 million in guarantees, with $2 million to sign, USA Today reports.

Young could start opposite of new Bears end Lamarr Houston in Chicago’s 4-3 front. The 28-year-old Young started 15-of-16 games for Detroit in 2013, notched 47 tackles and three sacks. Young (6-4, 251) ranked 95th on PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100.

Young is the second 2013 defensive starter from a division foe to join the Bears in as many days. On Thursday, the Bears added Packers safety M.D. Jennings, who was tendered as a restricted free agent.

  1. Solid move! If you re-sign Corey Wooten we are all set at Defensive end rotation. With Nate Collins, Stephen Paea, and Ratliff our D-line is very underated.

  2. Ok. Solid not spectacular. Needed another DE, so got one. Keep adding guys. Build some competition and create flexibility in draft. It’s a good plan so far.

  3. Solid move for sure, I’m glad to see that Emery continues to show a knack for addressing needs…Jerry Angelo rarely did that.

  4. He’s pretty good and has lots of room to get a lot better. Could be a star DE someday. Bears fans should be happy with this one. I think the Lions were crazy to let him walk.

  5. He’s a decent player. The Lions have a ton of money invested in the defensive line with Suh and Fairley. That’s why they let Cliff Avril go a year ago.

  6. That’s 44 million Emery has spent this week on two Defensive Ends with a combined 10 sacks between them last season. He better know what he’s doing…

  7. Good pickup, solid rotational guy. Still need 1 DE. Its obvious Houston with his 302 lb frame will move inside with Ratliff and Paea. I would be surprised if we picked up Allen. Emery said we’ll get younger on D. “With the 14th pick in the 2014 draft the Chicago Bears select……Kony Ealy defensive end Missouri…..” take it to the bank.

  8. This is NOT about sacks.

    Let’s analyze last year:
That defense got absolutely gouged by the run. Everyone ran on them. Not just AP and top backs. Third stringers. Guys who were out of the league. People in walkers. Everyone.

If you can run, why pass? So, during the start of off-season, Emery and Trestman figured: you got to earn the right to rush the passer. #1 – Stop the run. Be better up the middle, set the edge, be more creative in your schemes. To that end, get players with more experience, who can be more flexible. Stop the run. Make teams pass more. Win more time of possession battles. Get off the field on D.

You do realize if this D (2014) can rank 17th or 18th, not even Top 10 with the type of O they will have (likely Top 5), you are much better than last year. They blew at least three games not being able to stop teams from running.

  9. He has 6 career sacks. He’s terrible against the run. he was 3rd in pressures in the NFL last year because he plays next to Suh, Fairley and Ziggy, and was taken out on rushing downs late in the year for Devin Taylor. He’d have been a 20 snap a game guy if James Jones was healthy all year.

He looks good but he never gets home to the QB, and that ‘s playing next to 2 stud rush DTs and the rookie sack leader.

Good luck with that Bears…$3M a year for a 4th DE. Yikes.

Seeya Willie, glad to see you made your $ after being near Mr Irrelevant in the draft when you came out. Expect the Lions to run Bell (who was a much better 3/$9M spend) behind Warford and Waddle at you all day twice a year
