Report: Vikings strike three-year deal with Captain Munnerlyn

Another top 100 free agent is off the market.

And another player is leaving Carolina.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the Vikings have agreed to a three-year contract with Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.

Munnerlyn was No. 43 on PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100, and he was the 12th highest-rated non-tagged or unsigned player left on the market, per our rankings.

Munnerlyn (5-8, 195) started all 16 games for the Panthers in 2013, defending 12 passes, hauling in two picks and making 74 tackles. He does not turn 26 until April, and under his new contract, he can again test free agency before he reaches age 30.

This continues a day of personnel changes for the Panthers, who released star wideout Steve Smith and lost Ted Ginn to Arizona.

  1. Let’s be honest.

Minnesota is singlehandedly tearing up free agency, getting all the best value free agents for the perfect price.

This is why we are the best franchise in sports.

No one has had a better offseason than us.

  2. This is why the vikings are building the team of the decade.we just signed one of the best corners in the nfl to go along with a future shutdown corner in agents love coming here and hate going to pathetic organizations like the shehawks and cheeseheads.SKOL

  3. Captain Munnerlyn will fill in the void of slot CB we’ve been missing since Antoine Winfield left.

Captain Munnerlyn gave up only 1 TD on over 98 targets.

And he’s plays in a division with Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.

He’s also a solid tackler and brings back the defensive presence in the backfield we need.

A perfect signing! One of the top rated corners for a value price.

The Vikings will have a top 5 defense under Zimmer this year.

  4. One of the biggest problems the defense had last year was that there was no one to play nickel cornerback. Josh Robinson was not suited to the slot but he was forced to play there. Now we have a legitimate slot corner in the mold of Antoine Winfield. Next up is finding a corner to start on the outside opposite Rhodes Island, maybe in the first round of the draft.

  5. Should be fun watching Eddie Lacy run him over and over and over and Calvin Johnson catching rainbows again and again against him.

  6. A five foot – eight inch corner in this conference?

Well, maybe the Vikings are breaking out a new patented-leather purple high-heeled shoe, because this runt is going to need all the help he can get.

Plus, they’ve resigned one of their less than stellar quarterbacks … and oh yes – just gave a 19 million dollar guaranteed contract to a defensive lineman that has started a total of one game in his professional career.

Lookout world! Here come the Vikings!

  7. This lets Josh Robinson move back outside, where he wasn’t quite so bad. Gosh, in today’s NFL that slot corner is a MAJOR player in your defense. You gotta have a good one. We used to have the best with Winfield, but Munnerlyn appears to be cut from similar cloth. Very competent, safe pickup for the Vikes. Good job, Rick!

  8. Best slot corner in the game. Brings back some Winfield game to Vikes, the guy can tackle. Also a great nose for picking it off and taking it in….Vikings are getting better and better, very excited about Zimmer leading us to the top of the North

  9. Good pick up. Corners that can play the slot are crucial in the league today (as the Vikes found out last year following the stupid release of Winfield). They still need another good corner in either free agency or first two rounds of draft.

In today’s NFL, you will be playing nickel more than your base 4-3 or 3-4 and I expect the Vikes to need 3 corners on the field 80% of the time when playing Rodgers, Cutler and Stafford 6x a year.

  10. Glad we signed the Captain, but I hope he plays the slot or he’ll need a cleats with lifts to cover Megatron and the two Bears WRs.

  11. Yes! He’s gonna fill a need we’ve had for almost a decade. Smith, Rhodes, and the Captain in the secondary!

  12. O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
    But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of Green and Gold,
Where on the deck the Packers lie,
    Fallen dead and cold.

  13. Bears fan here… I like this guy a ton. Not real big but good football instincts. We were rumored to trade for him last year and I was super psyched! Good luck Capt.

  14. By contrast, Sam Shields was the #52 ranked CB by PFF last year, and the Packers paid him twice as much per year as the Vikings paid Munnerlyn.

  15. All the good db’s available to start with and your gm whiffs with all that money. Now we hear the midget Munnerlyn is the next coming of Winfield. Man you guys are desperate for some relevancy aren’t you?

  16. Solid player with mental and physical toughness. Comes from a hard background and managed to keep a good head on his shoulders. Great tackler and good instincts. Lacks size but makes up for it with good hands, good build and solid vertical.

  17. Dang I hoped we couldve gotten him here in tampa. No worries though Tillman and Verner seem like a good set of starting corners to me

  18. Wow……. There are some very delusional people on here … Folks the Vikings have added some nice complimentary players but come on y’all can’t seriously say the Vikings have had the greatest offseason and I’m sorry but I’m dying laughing reading about this great dynasty the Vikings had…. Remind me when this was… They have never won a Super Bowl and let’s think here for a second ….. When exactly was their last Super Bowl appearance??? Sorry folks that’s hardly a dynasty and to hear teams like patriots and Seahawks and others made fun of is quite the laugher….. Geeez let’s get an open mind here and realize the Vikings are not close to being a contender based on what we have all seen lately…

  19. He won’t have to worry about hitting his head on the ceiling fan in the locker room. He’s got that goin’ for ‘im.

  20. Mike Zimmer already building his new D. I’m telling you all. This will be a top 10 D in 2 years. Ban me from this site if I’m wrong. And I was never a Viking fan, but I am now.

  21. Vikings will have a top 5 defense? Everyone can have their own opinion but picking up a CB, can turn a team from one of the last rated defense to rank among Seahawks, Panthers, 49ers, Cardinals? Maybe the Easter Bunny will bring more treats this year!

  23. My favorite stat is also 7 int’s but it took 5 years! Little over 1 a year what a shutdown threat.

  24. I’ve been waiting all day to hear about this deal. Glad we landed him for at least three years. SKOL!

  25. Excellent signing. Slot corner has been a Viking plug and play effort for 3 years. Winfield was great at run support, but lacked covering the pass since 2011. Robinson was ineffective last year in the slot.

  26. Hope the Vikings are planning to use him in the slot and not outside. This fills a huge need thoough. Hopefully they grab another CB in FA or the draft.

  27. “wisconsin” is a pretend state, funded solely by their one profitable company known as the packers… maybe someday they will aspire to be like their superior neighbor to the west.. But obviously not any time in this generation….
The Great State of Minnesota >> “wisconsin”

Oooh I guess you got us there. What are you like 5?

  29. In the NFC north Captain might get 15 INT’s this season from whoever is backing up oft injured Cutler, mr Rodgers, and Stafford. Skol

  30. People who read Vikings threads. There are a select few who yell championship every year. It’s nothing new. The Vikings are looking better on paper and we need to see it on the field. The team gets more grief than it deserves, but that’s what happens after a few bad years.

Right now I just can’t believe Carolina. I really thought they were looking great last year and would be a very hot team in 2014. Now I’m watching a bunch of their players lost in free agency and wonder what the heck they are doing.

  31. This isn’t looking good for Green Bay. Varnish sales continue to be on the incline in that sad, sad state.

On a bright note, we’re turning things around fort the long run here in the beautiful state of Minnesota, and, AND, Rick Speilman Is A Magician is back!

  32. More and more I find myself pulling for the Vikings. They are certainly addressing their many issues. I can’t help but think a bit of help on the other side of the ball is coming soon. New staff can make every difference. Good luck Vikings and fans, you’ll get it right before too long and it will be well deserved.

  33. All this talk of winners and losers. Let’s talk winning this way. Better state- Check. Better jobs- Check! Better looking women- Check! Superior outdoor living- Check! Less Girly men whining about the cold-Check! Super Bowls- Nope! Who cares! I wouldn’t trade being a Viking fan for your Super Bowl trophies any day. There’s a reason were the only state in the Midwest without an oil field that people are moving too, and not away from. There’s a reason why we have the highest quality of living in the country that you don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy. I’ve been to every state. I wouldn’t trade ya! And by the way, if the trophy wasn’t named after a Packer legend, we’d have already won a bunch. Lombardi’s name on the Championship trophy is the jinx! Think we’re losers here? You can live in ignorance.

  34. Smart and calculating, getting the most bang for the buck in free agency is Zim (and Speilman). There is something abuzz that Frasier and his crew were not to attain. Getting excited for 2014 Vikes.

  35. The biggest difference this years isn’t the FA acquisitions or the drafted players, but the coaching staff. The Vikings haven’t had a decent coaching staff since Denny.

  36. before he came to MN, his coach noticed the similarities to winfield and showed him tape of winfield. the captain studied and took part of winfield’s game and made it his own…. just saying… Its not NOW we are saying hes like winfield…. the comparison was made before … earlier in his career. you probably didn’t know that…

  37. The Captain said one reason he came was because his old college roommate, Jasper Brinkley, really sold him on joining the Vikings. Now we know why they signed Brinkley. I hope Captain won’t be too disappointed when Brinkley gets cut in training camp.
