Vikings add cornerback Derek Cox

A year ago today, cornerback Derek Cox signed a contract with the Chargers, which supposedly paid him $10.25 million guaranteed.  Cut while still $4.25 million short of that amount, Cox celebrated the anniversary by signing with a new team.

Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that Cox has signed a contract with the Vikings.  It’s a one-year deal.

The move comes on the same day the Vikings signed cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.  The Vikings under new coach Mike Zimmer also have re-signed defensive tackle Fred Evans and defensive end Everson Griffen.

The Vikings also reportedly visited with defensive tackle Henry Melton, and they possibly will re-sign defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

  1. Good low-risk signing. Chargers defense was garbage last year and could have just been a bad fit for Cox (hehe).

He’s still young and not far removed from his good days in Jacksonville. I like it.

  2. I like it.

If he plays like he did in Jax, he’s a good corner with the size needed to counter the huge WRs that are in the division. If he sucks, he gets cut again.

  3. This really smells of desperation. The Vikings have been collecting other teams’ table scraps with a vengeance this year, but none of it will matter.

The Vikings will finish 5-11. They will lose twice, in humiliating fashion, to the far superior Green Bay Packers. Mike Zimmer, like many who came before him, will begin to understand that being a good defensive coordinator does not always translate well to being a good head coach. He’ll be terminated immediately after the 2015 season.

Minnesota can look forward to many, many, many more non-Lombardi seasons.

  4. Another great low risk-high reward type signing by the Vikings.

A cheap one year contract deal for a CB who’s had 13 ints in his career.

He had a down year in SD but was a top tier CB in Jacksonvile.

If any coach can turn him back around- it would be Mike Zimmer.

The Vikings are ahead of every team in the NFL in free agency value signings.

We’re spending our money wisely, with top quality players.

  5. Can’t wait to hear how the Viking homer twists this one

  6. The Vikings are putting together an awfully good practice squad team here. They’ll be lucky to win 12 games combined in the next 3 seasons.

  7. As a Jag fan, I know all about this guy. When he’s healthy, he’s pretty good. Unfortunately that’s rare and he spends much of his time on the IR.

  8. I like these moves by the Vikings a lot. Addressing big holes on the defensive side of the ball. With Zimmer and his no nonsense way of coaching defenses, I expect big things from the defense next year. I’m a fan, but I’m also realistic. This could be a very good , fast defense next year. I’d like to add a linebacker with speed. I would love to see the Vikings use the #8 pick on Mack, Moseley or Barr and then get a qb in the 2nd or 3rd round. No need to throw another qb into the fire.

  9. Keep bringing the defense in Zim. Draft Mack at 8 they will not be last next because ponder will not be starting.Draft a qb in the later rounds.

  10. Fresh leggs baby. Zim is addressing the Defense and it almost certainly tells me that the first pick is not going to be on a QB. They will address the LB position first. I am still surprised that Greenway hasn’t been cut due to his salary hit this year.

  11. Please sign KWill and Melton.
Cox is Zimmers kind of guy.
Anyone else see Zimmer forming a 4-3/3-4 hybrid D?

  12. This signing makes no sense, he was god-awful in 2013 getting benched 3 times in a 4 game span for the Chargers. His nickname is Toast because every time he lined up to cover his WR, he got burned.

So what’s the difference between Cox and Cook?, nothing except for the spelling of the last name on the back of their jersey. Well to be fair to Cox, he probably spends less time in jail if that counts for anything.

  13. Love the series of depth picks. Munnerlyn and Cox both have starter potential and who better than Mike Zimmer to get the best out of them

  14. Zimmer is going to make a man out of Derek Cox. Vikes are savaging free agency this year. Johnny football is going to be great on this squad

  15. Derek Cox…..? To be honest, I like a lot of what our GM does…however, it continues to amaze me the lack of urgency he puts into the secondary…last year, year before…and now this year…we sign a bunch of average corners AGAIN!! It’s a passing league and we wonder why our defense is TORCHED on a constant basis….and lord help us if we have one injury. With all this cap space it shocks me we didn’t land on of the bigger names. Can’t wait to see us go up against the receivers in our division with Marcus Sherels, Robinson or a rookie on the opposite our ONE good corner……I can smell the the burn already!

  16. Cox should get an award for best impersonation of a DB in the NFL.
or get 15-20 years for grand theft ( pro contract ).

  17. I had to look this guy up. Sounds like he was pretty good until last year, when he was terrible. Could be the kind of reclamation project Mike Zimmer is famous for. You can never have enough cornerbacks competing in camp.

  18. Derek Cox is soooooo terrible! I wouldn’t even practice squad this guy.

He got benched and his replacement was injured right… they put in a guy we got off the streets that was with the team for only 1 week rather than put him back in. If that puts into perspective how “good” he was for us.

He got paid and never showed up, not even a little. He got benched 6 times last year. I couldn’t be happier we cut him.

    Enjoy Vikes.

  19. I assume if he makes the roster that he starts across from Rhodes. Adding Munnerlyn in the nickel makes this as a passable pass defense. Still, we have a little money to spend, maybe have some linebackers pay a visit, Brandon Spikes and Daryl Smith are still options to bring in for an interview.

  20. Its nice to see they arent sitting around watching the free agency market. Todays NFL is all about team chemistry. The window for winning a superbowl is small and can close fast. Were definitely rebuilding the defense. Look back at last year and see we lost at least 3 games when the defense couldnt hold a 4th quarter lead. Yet, I still cant help but wonder when Norv gets a shot to add a few pieces. Maybe we try and trade up to get one of the 3 QBs in the draft? I doubt seriously any of them is available at #8. Theres no guarantees they’ll win, but at least I’ll look forward to the season.

  21. Great move…nothing but upside here. One year “prove it” deal with a guy who’s proven he can be good in the past. If there’s anybody who can help turn his career back around, it’d be Zimmer with Jerry Gray.

  22. I certainly like this add from this physical specs (over 6ft.) nice to line him an rhoades on the out side with captain an the inside. hoping they draft another CB. Defensive is looking better. Que the packer rubes for their comment, all i hear is crickets from their side of FA. GBmicky what clever comment do you have today, what piece of old history do u want to quip today, get that dude doc browns time machine all he wants to do is talk about the past

  23. The Vikings had me getting worried. No longer. Very happy with the work being done so far. This will really give the Vikes a good opportunity to go draft impact players instead of just trying to fill holes. Starting QB (for now) – check, D-line – check, cornerback – check. And they brought back jasper Brinkley, so really we’ve got a nice linebacker corps now too.

    Things are lookin up!

  24. Good moves so far, but this is a work in progress for sure. I hope the Vikings draft a defensive starter in the 1st round, McCarron in the 2nd, and mostly defense the rest of the way, with the exception of an OL or two. The the Vikes can find a way to stop people, Norv will be able to coax enough out of that offense to sneak into the playoffs.

  25. I would rather they just re-signed Cook and have him work/develop with Zimmer and Gray, but at least they’re adding depth.

  26. He showed promise while in Jacksonville. I think they just want to bring him into camp and see if his career is salvageable. If not, he’ll probably be a camp cut. That’s the reason for the 1 year contract, he needs to prove he deserves to be on the team.

  27. I cannot believe how many SKOL fans are looking at this as a “great” addition!?!? The guy couldn’t cover the slowest guy on the opposing team last year. Not a Vikings fan but I hope this guy is cut in training camp, he’s about the worst i’ve ever seen.

If he’s only getting $1 for one year, it’s 99 cents too much!!
