The Vikings have re-signed a wide receiver known for his highlight-reel ability.

The club said Friday it had reached an agreement with Jerome Simpson, who finished second on the club in catches (48) and yards (726) in 2013.

The 28-year-old Simpson has made 36 regular season starts in six NFL seasons. A second-round pick of Cincinnati in 2008, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Simpson played four seasons for the Bengals before joining the Vikings in 2012. He has hauled in 145 passes for 2,004 yards and eight TDs in his pro career, displaying field-stretching skill and some rare athleticism at times.

PFT’s No. 103-ranked free agent, Simpson rejoins a Minnesota receiving corps with some intriguing playmaking ability. In addition to Simpson, the Vikings have Greg Jennings, Cordarelle Patterson and Jarius Wright on the depth chart at receiver.

  1. Jerome Simpson is so irrelevant he should not have even been ranked in the list of free agents. But, being irrelevant fits in nice with the Vikings franchise. Cheers!

  2. Great signing ” the juice”gives 110% , never complains and takes the big hits over the middle, glad to see him back !! Skol vikes

  3. One morning I was walking down the street when I saw an old homeless man sitting at the corner of the block – he came up to me and asked me for some spare change.

I quickly responded to his request with this: “Why are you asking me for spare change when the Vikings are the real wealth of the world? if you become a fan you will obtain all the richness and greatness that comes along with it”

This man is now a millionaire.

  4. Good for him. Dude can frickin fly. His 48 catches last year probably should have been 70 if not for his drops though. I remember that well when he was a Bengal.

  5. He was pretty effective last year, but I wonder if he will be subject to any suspension for 2014 after his DWI arrest.

  6. Another great signing. He was clutch in the last 1/2 of the year, with great hands over the middle. He will continue to grow with Jennings and Patterson…and Zimmer knows him well

  7. They need to do whatever they think needs to be done to catch the Packers, because, as everyone knows, the Packers own the Vikings. Petty insults cannot change that fact, but you are free to keep trying if it makes you feel good about yourselves. Good luck with that.

  8. I thought we were closer last year than our record indicated. We really needed our defense to play better and now they have added quality at multiple positions on that side of the ball. I like the Simpson signing. He is more trouble off the field than on. A solid player who doesn’t gripe. I am still waiting for the upgrades at quarterback and linebacker. One or more of last year’s rookies may have something to show at linebacker but the cupboard is still pretty bare at QB.

  9. How many of AP’s kids have filed for free agency this offseason? He certainly hasn’t taken care of his brood thus far.

  10. So their passing game will be as about effective as last season. Even though they have different “cook” a lot of the ingredients are the same.

You know what they say, You can’t make Chicken Salad out of ….

  11. It a classic Viking move, they take a player who was arrested, underperformed to his contract, and generally sucked since signing with the Vikings and gave him a raise. First Cassel couldn’t suck enough last year, voids his contract and then gets a raise. Then, because the Vikings don’t have enough players who really suck, they sign Cox who was benched 6 different times last year and the cut by the Chargers, guess where he is playing next year, that’s right, the Vikings.

Somewhere Jeff George is moaning, wishing he was just a few years younger.

  12. I hated seeing Childs get cut… I really thought he would make it. We need to draft another WR with one or both of our 3 rounders. Round 1, LB or DB Round 2 Qb. Rounds 4-7…?

  13. Glad the Vikings re-signed Simpson- I’m guessing the same deal as last year. Like him better as a back-up to CP84, which he will be now- so its a good fit. Simpson can make plays on occasion, and still has good speed and athletic ability.

  14. Lol ppl are trying too hate on this cuz they have nothing better to do. Simpson was pretty good last year in a shaky offense, him and cassel gained some chemistry as the year went on. and he will be a 3rd or 4th option In this offense now with cordarrelle emerging.

And no need to remind us how many superbowls we have we’re gonna love our vikes and bleed purple anyway. Skol.

  15. Simpson is happy to re-sign, saying “It is a huge hassle to get to know the FedEx guy well enough that he brings the pot inside the house when I am not at home”..

In case people forgot, Simpson was the guy that said he was going to quit the NFL and be a drug dealer. He was arrested for possession of marijuana. He ahd 2 and a half pounds delivered to his house via FedEx and when the cops came to investigate, after intercepting the package, Simpson let them inside to look around and the cops found 5 additional pounds of weed. A real brainiac.

  16. edenprairie… damn straight.
Simpson has his …um, issues, to be sure. But it’s not easy evaluating any of our receivers with Ponder bailing out of the pocket back there, lobbing ducks into the flat, getting married at halftime.

“He will help them miss the playoffs for the 8th straight season!!

“A Packer fan that can’t count. Imagine that.”

Hows that any different from the Viking fans who keep saying GB got bounced from the playoffs in the first round 5 years in a row? Looks like both franchises have a couple of real genius fans

  18. According to a source – he was going to sign with the Broncos but was too worried about the other Pot Dealer competition

He probably needs to take his shoes off to count above 10 and take his pants off to count to 20.25
