Bears bring back Israel Idonije

The Bears are signing yet another defensive end, one they know well.

Israel Idonije, who played in Chicago from 2004 to 2012, has agreed to return to the Bears. A league source tells PFT that the sides agreed to terms today.

Idonije played last season with the Lions but was used sparingly in Detroit, finishing the season with just seven total tackles and half a sack.

The Bears have now added two free agent defensive ends from the Lions, having previously signed Willie Young. They also signed former Raider Lamarr Houston, who should be the Bears’ top pass rusher this season.

  1. Brought back two amazing pillars in this community. Peanut Tillman and Izzy Idonije. Let’s just hope it translates to play on the field.

  2. Good signing. Not inly is he a positive role model for the guys we signed but also the ones we draft. Emery isn’t done adding d-line and safeties. If we resign Wootton then Clinton-dix we’ll draft. If not don’t be surprised to see us pick up KOny Ealy at 14. #dabears

  3. Nice solid move…Being back where he belongs will see his numbers back where they belong.

  4. I suspect this was done because Briggs threw a tantrum that he only had one friend left on the team. The “Good ‘Ol Days” are gone Lance. And yes, these new better, faster, stronger kids think you’re old, fat, slow and bitter.

  5. Bringing in two former Lions says one of two things:

    1) Chicago indeed was very bitter about their “hush-hush” secrets being spread throughout the league and now intend to be hypocrites about it.

    2) Things have gotten so bad that the Bears have been reduced to taking scraps from the Detroit Lions.

    I’ll go with the latter.

  6. Izzy was always one of my favorites, and it broke my heart to see him go to the darkside.

He had way too much character and integrity to play on a d-line (and team) of dirtbags like the Lions anyway…and now watch Izzy’s production go WAY up this season, too.

Now, bring Wooten back — another unselfish, versatile and underrated d-linemen, and we’ll be getting somewhere. Good depth/rotation, versatility…

As for Melton…? He seems to be off his rocker now. I used to want him back with the Bears, too, but he’s playing the part of a Cowboy (or a Lion) off the field now, so let them have him.

  7. Nice guy but he sucked when he was on the field for the Lions. Old and slow, so he should fit right back in on the Bears defense.

  8. Emery has signed 11 Defensive players in a month, at least he is doing something! Adding depth and competitiveness to terrible defense! I see nothing wrong with this move or his other 1o moves….

    Go Bears!

  9. Wow. Some of you kids clearly have no clue. The Bears defense had one down year and they’ve been one of the best in the NFL for a lot longer than you’ve been alive.

Izzy going back “home” will help him AND it will help the Bears. As a Packer fan, I hate this move and I hate the Bears in general, but I at least have enough sense to give respect where it is due.

  10. When Lions DE Jason Jones was injured very early in the season, Idonije had a chance to earn significant playing time. However, his ineffectual play on the field led to Willie Young starting at LDE and rookie Devin Taylor seeing more playing time as the season went on.

Idonije looked like he was done in Detroit. Let’s see if he does enough to even make the Bears team.

A great guy who may just be at the end of the road.

  11. I am a Raider and lamented Houston’s departure but to say with 6.5 sacks last year he will be your “top pass rusher” means you will generate as much pressure as the Raiders did last year on opposing QB’s. Good luck.
