Bucs sign long snapper Jeremy Cain

Add long snapper Jeremy Cain to the growing list of new arrivals in Tampa.

The NFL’s daily transaction release brings word that Cain has signed with the Buccaneers.

Cain played two games for the Bears last season in place of the injured Patrick Mannelly and spent the previous four seasons snapping for the Jaguars. Cain has also played for the Titans in 2007 and had previous stints with the Bears in both 2004 and 2005. Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith was the head coach of the Bears in those days, so Cain’s not an unfamiliar face to the man who will have final say on whether he makes the team.

Andrew Economos has been the Bucs’ long snapper since 2006, but is a free agent and Cain’s arrival could be a signal that he’ll be moving on if he plays in the 2014 season. The Bucs signed Patrick Scales to a reserve/future contract and he’ll likely be Cain’s competition for the job this offseason.
