Mario Manningham returns to the Giants

After two years on the opposite coast, Mario Manningham is going back to his original NFL team.

Manningham has agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants, a league source tells PFT.

The 27-year-old Manningham was a third-round draft pick of the Giants in 2008 and played four years there. In his best season, 2010, he caught 60 passes for 944 yards and nine touchdowns. The Giants would love to see Manningham return to the form he showed when he was at his best in his previous stint in New York.

But it’s been a while since Manningham was at his best. Manningham signed a two-year contract with the 49ers as a free agent in 2012, but he never contributed much in San Francisco. His first season was off to a disappointing start even before he suffered a torn ACL, and in 2013 he was slow to recover from that injury and was a non-factor when he did return, catching just nine passes before going on injured reserve for the second year in a row.

Manningham has a good rapport with Eli Manning and is a natural to fill in for the departed Hakeem Nicks in the Giants’ passing game. If Manningham is back to full speed, a return to New York makes sense to both sides.

  1. so completes the “pool” for san francisco. other than the “must sign” priorities of dawson and boldin, the niners lost every one of their free agents.

  2. I hate when Reese does these 1 year deals.
Have a good year and then they leave for another team.

  3. The run and shoot ‘route guessing’ was hard at times for Mario. Hope he shines in a new offense.

I would have thought SOMEONE would have signed with Carolina…

  4. Bucky — Boone –Tyree — Manningham

4 unassuming New Yorkers who have effectively ended a Boston sports season in gut wrenching fashion. Not gonna get a lot of free dinners up here in Beantown. Prob more than a few tho once you get south of Hartford…doh.

  5. I’m assuming they got him on the cheap due to the injuries the past two seasons…

Could be a great pickup with his knowledge of the organization, familiarity with Eli and him having to prove to the team and other teams that he is healthy again…

A one yr, cheap contract under these circumstances (previous history with them, him needing to show the league he is healthy again) can only be a win for the Giants.

If he fails or isn’t healthy, at least the price was right…

  6. Better to have a post-knee rehab Manningham back than to have the prima donna Nicks. Manningham might not do much, he might even get cut before the season starts, but at least he actually worked to come back from injuries, unlike Nicks.

  7. Do the Giants have an extra 5 mill in cap space that nobody else has? They haven’t made this many moves in the last 5 years combined.

  8. Patriots vs Giants Superbowl rematch III
    Patriots by 24 points

Hear me now, believe me later!

  9. Styles make fights…..I always thought that Manningham was a great fit for Giants, but would most likely struggle elsewhere because of the type of offense we ran under Kildrive(when it actually worked). With a new OC on board, I’m looking forward to seeing how he responds to this new system. Worse case if he’s a bust, it’s a one year deal !!! Great off-season so far Big Blue

  10. As a Niner fan I gotta say it’s too bad it didn’t work out for Mario. He made some key plays for our team, he came from a winning organization reay to compete, but injury and our OC’s failure to utilize multiple wide receiver sets doomed him.

Even though I hate the NYG, hopefully this on their other FA moves allow them to retake the East. You can only improve if your enemy is competitive.

  11. That sucks. Would have liked to see him healthy and at full strength in San Fran.

    Nice take back Giants.

  12. I assume he’s coming on the (relative) cheap. So a good deal. But I expect to see two or three WRs drafted or in camp. This remains the one area I still feel uncomfortable with.

Still, having two WRs who know Eli is a good thing.

  13. Or may be he saw Cam Chancellor in the Super Bowl and decided …you know what ! I would rather go fight with Deangelo Hall ova theyy .. OOH by the way Deangelo .. don’t be talkin about the best .

  14. Niners fan here, he looked explosive before he blew out his knee in 2012. Thought he was a good fit for our offense, a nice complementary piece. Expected more after he returned last season but he didn’t look comfortable out there.

  15. The 49ers are a superior team and he couldn’t hang so he had to go re-join an inferior team that wont be able to hold the eagles jock strap in 2014. Great move! Bringing back old garbage. Woo! GIANTS 2014 SB CHAMPS! Bet on it!

  16. Funny the niners will make the playoffs, again, but with there ‘sissy” coach, will again hit STOP!
Mannigham, and all the other Reese signings have brought the team a solid combination of “new blood & old”, this one is simple, if he’s healed up, and yes I expect the doc’s looked, Eli already has some guys who know him well, and add the draft, the giants are at least moving forward, and we can beat the niners; GB; on any given day!

  17. Yeah, gotta love the free money he got for working out in the gym for the last 2 years. Good luck, not-so-super Mario…

  18. Did some guy actually compare Manningham to Tyree? I get the Giant hate, but seriously….get a clue. The guy was VERY good while he was a Giant and was 10x the receiver Tyree ever was on his best day. He probably wont be that anymore, but he was pretty darn dependable for a while with the Giants….that’s why we hated when he left.

Also DRC was the 5th rated corner in the NFL last year. And he was the only “splashy” move…every other move was a smart signing at not a lot of money to improve the entire roster. It was a well-balanced effort by Reese.

Some of you guys need to start reading pro football focus because many of you just aren’t to smart when it comes to actual on-field production. There isn’t one player, except for maybe JD Walton who is coming off of a serious injury, who isn’t considered at least a solid signing for the Giants thus far.

  19. He stunk in SF because their QB can’t unlock his eyes from his 1st read. Give Eli time and he’ll find Mario just like the time he found him in the SB. If you have forgotten that play, simply tune into the opening credits of every America’s Game from here to the end of eternity and you’ll see it in its full glory.

  20. Super Bowl 46. Manning to Manningham- one of the greatest plays in Giants history. Welcome back Mario.

  21. Very very happy with this signing, and to be honest mostly all of Reese’s FA acquisitions!!! I see some folks complaining about the DRC deal but Reese still managed to get him for a much better deal than he turned down in Denver!!! Our secondary may not be the LOB, but Trel Brown Amukamara DRC Thurmond III McBride is certainly not too shabby!!! Although I wish instead of signing Thurmond we would have re-signed T.Thomas.

  22. Said Super Mario: “Once a Giant, always a Giant. That’s how I feel. This is a very special place. I wanted to come back.”

  23. MM was actually Kap’s #1 target before the injury so facts may help a bit. He coulda flourished more if Roman knew how to use him though. In the end the injury hurt him most and he clearly wasn’t ready to come back when he did. That was after a full 10 week delay from his target return no less. I told everyone when he got hurt he would miss more than a year as PCL tears are a lot less forgiving. Wish the kid the best in NY

  24. Guy made a few big catches in the post season and parkayed that into some serious coin. The whiners front office wiffed on that FA signing. He will be a non factor for the G Men. His best days are behind him at the young age of 27

  25. 3.6 and 1.8m salaries.. on his 2 year deal. Yeah he really broke the bank big time. This is why raider fans just shouldn’t talk about other teams.

  26. Notice the Giants didn’t want MEDIOCRE Crabtree…

Now a very suspect receiving corp with a less than suspect QB are even weaker.

    Turn out the lights…

  27. Please raiderrob21 tell us when was the last time a Raider receiver had 947 yards and 9 T’D’s in a single season. That is what Manningham had for the Giants the year before the 9ers picked him up. Was a solid move by the 9ers, but sadly for them Manningham had a few injuries. The Giants are rolling the dice to see if Manningham has anything left in the tank on the cheep. Another solid football move, something a Raider wouldn’t know about, when was the last time the Raiders won anything? So dress up in your little costume, put your makeup on and watch whatever it is you call football.

  28. I just want to point out that we have Philly, Jets, and NE fans on this thread who are showing me that deep down, they are concerned about what the Giants are doing.

If Eli wins one more ring, he will have tied Tom Brady. You can talk about regular season dominance, or INTs until the end of time. This game is about rings, period… I’d rather have a QB that has 2 rings and led the league in INTs, then have a Dan Marino or Jim Kelly… Every successful man or business on this planet fails at some point and comes back to win again. That’s why Accorsi drafted Eli, and that’s why you sound foolish.

Eli’s record of comeback wins and never missing a game shows me what type of man I have as my QB…. Giants fans have seen this screenplay before… Was our defense feared in March of 2007 or 2011? No, it became something special…. I’m not afraid of your defense in March either… It’s about being relevant in December and being hot and healthy in January… Do it once, great job. Do it twice, it’s not luck anymore…

Eli has more mental and physical toughness than 99% of the NFL.
You better pray he doesn’t win a 3rd…

Either way, I’ll be in Canton to see him inducted… Along with Tom.
