One of the NFL’s top remaining free agents is heading to Arizona.

Antonio Cromartie, the veteran cornerback who became a free agent when the Jets released him in a cost-saving move, is signing with the Cardinals. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it’s a one-year deal.

Cromartie looks like he could be a great fit in Arizona: With Patrick Peterson as the No. 1 cornerback, opposing quarterbacks will have no choice but to throw in Cromartie’s direction. And with Cromartie’s ball skills, he’ll likely end up with a lot of interceptions. And Cromartie is, from all accounts, a player who has straightened his life out off the field and become a good veteran team leader. That should make him a good influence for young Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu.

Last year the Cardinals had an excellent defense on a team that fell just short of making the playoffs. This is the kind of move that could push the Cardinals over the edge, and make them a threat to the Seahawks and 49ers in the NFC West.
