Panthers expected to meet with Kevin Cone

There are a lot of ways to describe how little the current members of the Panthers’ receiving corps have done in the NFL, including the fact that they had fewer catches as a group in 2013 than Kevin Cone had while playing primarily a special teams role for the Falcons.

Cone had one catch for 12 yards, which is about as modest as totals can get during a season that saw the Falcons look for any and all help when Roddy White and Julio Jones were out of the lineup with injuries. Until you look at the zero catches last season by members of the Panthers’ group, of course.

We’re mentioning Cone because his agent told D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution that his client will visit with the Panthers on Friday. The Jaguars are also reportedly showing some interest in Cone.

At this point, you can’t really rule anything out for the Panthers at receiver but any interest in Cone likely comes from his work as a special teamer. He was not tendered as an exclusive rights free agent by the Falcons.

Cone is a fine athlete who played on a running team in college; the Falcons devoted quite a bit of development time on him but his failure to make an impression when injuries struck the Atlanta WR corps last year was revealing; a rookie UDFA Darrius Johnson, moved off the practice squad and immediately ahead of him. He might surprise with a new team and can help on special teams coverage ( not returns), but a major breakout seems unlikely…
