Maurice Jones-Drew traveled to Oakland on Thursday, and he reportedly won’t be leaving without a contract.

Jones-Drew has agreed to terms on a contract with the Raiders and will sign it if he passes his physical today, reports.

Jones-Drew met with Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie on Thursday and will now join a backfield that also features Darren McFadden, 2013 sixth-round pick Latavius Murray and former CFL star Kory Sheets.

The 29-year-old Jones-Drew grew up in Oakland and is now coming home to play for his hometown team. The Raiders hope that after back-to-back disappointing seasons, Jones-Drew can show he still has something left.

  1. Really good signing, I think they might have the best one, two punch backfield. They might want to add depth on the line. I think somewhere in the draft they need a wr and some help on D.

The Raiders seem to have had a great off-season so far.

  2. Good move for the Raiders. If they somehow acquired Evans or Watkins in the draft, things could get interesting. About time they had something go their way.

  3. A formidable two headed monster emerging in Oakland this year. Maybe if they slip the Reps they can keep each other healthy all year long.

  4. Between the Jags and Raiders this guy could play his entire career and never have a winning season to show for it.

  5. I would like to see him have one more big year, but it ought to be he and McFadden on the Questionable list every week.

  6. Honestly, I’m more excited about Kory Sheets. That guy can ball. The Roughriders will definitely miss him.

  7. Welcome back home MJD! Cant wait to see you tear it up in the Black Hole.

  8. That’s just awesome. It gives the Raiders a solid alternative at RB in case McFadden gets injured. Or maybe it’s McFadden that gives them a solid alternative in case Jones-Drew gets injured.

I mean, hey, all the time these guys have spent in the trainer’s room the last two years, what are the odds that both will be injured at the same time? Law of averages, right? Doesn’t one of them have to be healthy, eventually?

  9. NICE! Once again Reggie is bringing in quailty guys that everyone else is writting off. We are actually gonna win some games this year!!

  10. Great player who contributed a lot on a lousy team. The big question is how much gas does the pocket Hercules have left in the tank? Raiders may have got a bargain in MJD.

  11. He has some mileage on him – but those “disappointing” seasons were due to injury and also playing on perhaps one of the worst offenses in NFL history over the last few years.

The talent levels, play calling, and coaching under Mularkey and even through 1st half of last year with Gus were absolutely SUB NFL caliber.

He still has something left. Dude was a warrior and we will miss him.

  12. This one doesn’t make the best sense. Jones-Drew is old, very old by running back standards, with a lot of miles and a severe decline in yards per rush last season. It does buy them time to develop (after they find) a young back. Also, one would hope this guy carries the load and McFluff is only used as a change of pace back to catch the defence off guard. McFadden is not and never was an every down back.

  13. Man the raiders have made a lot of moves, wow. The only question is are they creating a Legends team, …….of the past. Do these guys they picked up have anything left?

  14. His disappointing seasons were due to injury and his cause was not exactly helped by playing for the Jags. He should do well in a limited role.

  15. We just saw the Super Bowl won by the team whose starting QB passed the least, an offense that relied on power running and a dogged defense. Yes, league rules are trying to make it more of a passing and scoring game for TV ratings, but on the field, players and coaches know that running and defense still dictate.

  16. Run DMC until he gets hurt, bring in MJD until he gets hurt, finish up the season with Murray and Sheets… All are healthy for the playoffs !

  17. Looks like the Raiders picked up a decent kick off return specialist and a short yardage and good runner in the open field.

  18. Well i love it when they sign guys from cali, just hope he’s not done.Raiders backfield Mc faddy-2013 hurt__Murry 2014 hurt__Drew 2014 hurt__Sheets 2014 Grey cup hero.Well at least one guy was healthy

  19. Being mentioned as having interest from the Steelers will get you paid. Contrast that with Eugene Monroe who was a lower tier player. The Ravens outbid themselves for him.

  20. Thank you for your service here in Jacksonville, but really MJD Oakland?! C’mon man, at least go out with your head held high….

  21. Raiders not signing players who are falling in their careers, more like players with chips on their shoulders trying to prove people like you who think their done

  22. The Raiders are becoming a destination of winners. This franchise will turn the mediocrity corner this year and take 9 games by storm. AFC West, this is your official warning.

If this was 2009, Oakland would be legit.
As opposed to your Jags, who have NEVER been legit, loser.

  24. I have always enjoyed watching MJD play. However, he can’t stay healthy. This is one of those times where I would have preferred a player to retire and to have only played for one team.

  25. So many people saying the Raiders where players go to die and such. If I’m not mistaken he is coming from Jacksonville no? Nothing is a step down from that.

  26. If pats or steelers signed him “OMG!! MJD will take them to the top and he still one of the top backs in the league WoW!!!!
When raiders signed him ” HAHA MJD is washed up, what a joke”

  27. Love all the Jags hate. And ignorance. When was the last time Oakland won a playoff game? Jags were there in 2007 MJDs 2nd season.

He wanted to get paid knowing his career is almost over and Jacksonville in the middle of a rebuild wasn’t over paying a broken RB, Oakland likely over paid, good for him, but he’s done for. He won’t ever be a 1k yard back again and we in Jax saw he lost a step and a bit of speed. You raider fans that think he is your saving grace are delusional.

  28. The Raiders quietly have been building a very solid run blocking O-Line.

MJD running behind this line will generate a lot of 20+ yard runs.

He ran for 800 behind a very bad o-line last year, if he stays healthy… I could see him running for 1000 yards next season with The Raiders.

  29. “The Raiders hope that after back-to-back disappointing seasons, Jones-Drew can show he still has something left.”

I think you meant “back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back” disappointing seasons.

11 straight seasons without a winning record!

  30. I get he grew up in Oakland and wanting to play for your hometown team….but he obviously doesn’t want to win. Ya think he’d want a shot with a contender! Good luck MJD!!

  31. Back to back disappointing seasons? Try back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back disappointing seasons. And counting….

  32. Imagine looking at this Raider roster 2 years. I like all these fans that have already written off this team. Maybe theyre right. Maybe all these guys have come collect a paycheck and end their careers…

But I have a feeling that Bronco/Chief/Charger fans are starting to feel a little nervous. These are players that have worked hard for years to get where they are and still have something to prove. Reggie needs to come up big on draft day. ONE NATION welcome home MJD!

  33. Desperate times called for desperate measures.

For those knocking the Jaguars- they outdrew the Steelers the last 2 years, haven’t had a blackout since 2008, have new ownership, GM, and coach. They graded an A in Free Agency amd have 11 picks coming up in a deep draft.

They are building the world’s largest video boards pus pools, cabanas and palm trees into the stadium.

So long, MJD, thanks for the great work and thinks for the stupid holdout.

  34. It’s funny how teams like the jags,Vikings,Brown’s,chargers,Broncos, chiefs all get like 7comments per team post. The raiders even at their worst continue to be the talk to the town! Everyone secretly wants to be a RAIDER! Love the move, all these people saying he’s not gna be our saviour, well you’re right! We don’t need him to be! Dmacc, James jones, mjd, tuck, Woodley, Smith, cwood, I love it!

  35. Oakland…where NFL careers go to—wait a minute, there have already been 27 comments that said that. Please people…think of something original and/or intelligent. That is neither.

  36. Raiders pulling more bodies off the scrap heap. Justin Tuck, Lamar Woodley, James Jones, Matt Schaub and now MJD?

Don’t get what they’re trying to accomplish here. And I’m a Browns fan.

  37. I would love to be objective and be excited for the Raiders moves but MJD, Tuck and Woodley are 3 guys who are always nicked up and clearly on the decline. I hope these deals amount to 1 year contracts to plug holes and McKenize gets some young talent in from the draft. If you keep doing things the same way you will have the same result. They are duplicating the strategy of signing Warren Sapp, Richard Seymour and Jerry Rice long after they gave everything they had to give to football.

  38. Signed on the basis of past performance alone. He will at BEST give you 600 yards if McFadden gets hurt. Runs with a rough crowd and will sucker punch the fan base if you get in his way, then get off on all charges. (St. Augustine, bro?)

Never gives ‘his all’ and is always about himself. No leadership skills. Buh-byyye!

  39. I love it .. All the Haters who have no sense of a football IQ. Lyle Alzado, Romanowski, Plunkett, Etc. all revived their careers to the fullest in Oakland. Just the thought that we are showing love to a guy who grew up a RaiderFan and want to prove his worth to the very same that are voicing now, only makes this a pitch perfect scenario to shut you all up!

  40. But I have a feeling that Bronco/Chief/Charger fans are starting to feel a little nervous

Nope, not even a little. I was a little interested in what Oakland would do with all their cap money before free agency, and they elected to let their talented guys walk (Veldheer, Houston)…brought in used garbage (Schaub, Tuck, MJD) and will continue to blow draft picks (Hayden, McClain, Heyward-Bey, Russell)

Not even slightly worried about Oak. They’re irrelevant in the NFLs landscape today.

  41. Signing of over the hill players nobody else wanted proves McKenzie is desperate .Raider fan since the 60’s and Mckenzie needs to go and stop collecting a check for producing a 4-12 team .Next year 2-14 or 0-16.

  42. WOW lol lol you guys seem really upset! Relax. The Raiders picked up a decent RB. Geez!! Stop worrying so much. As soon as i saw the pick up, the hate flooded in like Noah’s Ark. Relax!!! ahahahahahahahhahahahah Raiders4life

  43. The Raider fan base’s delusion is somewhat worrisome. Just because this joke of a franchise finally has a little bit of cap space to sign some FAs, does not mean it’s all going to magically get you into the playoffs.
Denver Broncos notable FA acquisitions of the last few years:
    QB: Peyton Manning
    WR: Wes Welker
    CB: DRC & Aqib Talib
    S: TJ Ward
    DL: Demarcus Ware
Oakland Raiders notable FA acquisitions of late:
    QB: Matt Schaub
    WR: James Jones
DL: Justin Tuck & Lamaar Woodley

John Elway, still killing the Raiders even when he doesn’t suit up.

Commitment to excrement. Just lose baby. I would comment on the consecutive non-winning streak, but I’ve actually lost count.

  44. The EBT Nation should get ready for a Super Bowl Run, great pickup.

    San Francisco 49ers

Jim Drukenmller is making a comeback, Reggie” Ted Thompson” Mc Kenzie should give a look.

  45. Hate on Haters…..we love the hate and jealousy…

    Home Sweet Home…welcome back MJD!

    Go Raiders…Go Reggie….

  46. All the jealous haters got it wrong ! The Raiders signed all of these older players for leadership in the locker room and to contribute to forming a winning foundation. MJD will be an excellent part time player in Oakland and provide leader ship in the locker room. DJAX just got released . If the Raiders sign him and draft WR Sammy Watkins , WATCH OUT !

  47. Sometimes you have to spend a season in semi-pro football to get healthy and earn your way back to the Show. Hope to see MJD back in the NFL after his stint with the Raiders…

  48. Hey Charger, Chief and Bronco fans… As bad as the Raiders have been lately you guys, we still own the AFC West. Check the stats and yes history is a part of the game! So while you sit there and post your nonsense remember even after all these years of being “irrelevant” your teams cant even sniff our legacy! Thanks for the daily laughs!!! 15 division titles and 3 Super Bowls, suck it losers!!!

  49. 15 starts, over 1,100 all purpose yards, 43 catches, 5 TDs.

If MJD has another “disappointing season” like this one next year I’m sure the Raiders will be able to live with it.

  50. This is the worst signing of them all.

RB’s fall of a cliff right about his age and he’ll just hold back younger talent that they can develop.

This whole offseason is a complete disaster and an extremely short term fix.

And if it’s a three year deal then that makes Reggie certifiably insane.

  51. Wow, so many Raider-Haters on here… I love how you people say these FA are “Washed-Up” or are on a “Money Grab” when they sign with the Raiders. From what I have read, all the FA contracts have been cap friendly deals that do not support the “Money Grab” theory and the whole “Washed-Up” thing is a joke. I’m sure your teams QB won’t think Justin Tuck is “Washed-Up” after he’s just had his head bounced off the turf from a Justin Tuck sack. RAIDER NATION!!!!

  52. Doesn’t it get tiresome to hate on a team coming off back 2 back 4-12 seasons? What 11 or 12 losing seasons? Not worried about what my team is doing but let’s go see what Oakland is doing. Hahaha I love it haters.

  53. I don’t hate the Raiders (except for the bogus call on Ray Sugar Bear Hamilton back in ’76 but the Tuck Rule made that even) but I don’t really understand what your GM is doing.

He let 2 talented guys walk in FA and brought in the over the hill guys. #confusedI am

I think you meant “back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back” disappointing seasons.

11 straight seasons without a winning record!
48 straight seasons without a Super Bowl victory. I’ll take 11 straight losing seasons over that any day.

The Oakland Raiders – Where player careers go to die.
Then it must seem odd to you that the Giants keep signing those guys.
