The Jets are interested in running backs not simply because theirs aren’t so good. The Jets eventually could be without the services of 2013 free-agent arrival Mike Goodson.
As explained by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Goodson returned to court today on weapons charges. He’ll be back in court next month, on May 19, as the wheels of justice grind like the rusty gears of an abandoned tractor.
Indicted in November on two weapons charges arising from a May 2013 arrest for alleged possession of a gun containing an illegal hollow-point bullet, Goodson previously rejected a plea agreement that would have entailed a three-year prison sentence with eligibility for parole after one year. Per Mehta, the offer has been pulled by prosecutors.
Goodson also has been charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was suspended four games in 2013 for violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.
It’s unclear when Goodson’s legal situation will be resolved, but for now it would be prudent for the Jets to not assume he’ll be available to practice and play. At some point, those rusty gears will move to the point that the case is resolved, and it could knock Goodson out of the NFL for a while, if not permanently.
