It’s a three-year deal for DeSean, but for how much?

Jackson

It’s now known that receiver DeSean Jackson has joined the Redskins. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal covers three years.

But no one has reported anything about the most important factor in the negotiation: The money.

Jackson was due to make $10.5 million this year in the third season of a five-year deal with the Eagles, but Philly pulled the plug after only two seasons. For Jackson, it’ll be interesting to see how much he makes in 2014, and how much of the package will be fully guaranteed and guaranteed for injury only beyond the first year.

The fact that nothing has been leaked about the terms of the contract likely means Jackson won’t be getting $10.5 million or close to it in 2014, and that the deal won’t average $9 million or more per year. It also means that Jackson’s camp opted not to leak phony numbers that would later be exposed once the real numbers are filed with the NFL and the NFLPA.

It’ll be interesting to see whether reports emerge that Jackson could have gotten more with the 49ers, Browns, or Raiders, and that Jackson took less to stay in the NFC East and face the Eagles twice per year.

Regardless of the money that will change hands, that’s precisely what Jackson will be doing in 2014. Whether the arrangement lasts beyond 2014 depends in part on the financial commitments made, or not made, in Jackson’s contract.
