Report: Lions to host Bills on Thanksgiving

The 2014 regular-season schedule has yet to be released, and no portion of it has been leaked.

The first leak comes from the Bills’ official website, which buries as item No. 8 in a 13-point look at the team’s schedule the news that the Bills will play at Detroit on Thanksgiving.

It’s not much of a surprise.  Because this year’s Thanksgiving game hosted by the Lions will be televised by CBS, the opponent will be an AFC team.  The two AFC teams who’ll visit Detroit this year are the Bills and Dolphins.

Bringing the Bills to Detroit means that former Lions coach Jim Schwartz will be returning to town, in the first season after he was fired.

The Cowboys will host an NFC team in the mid-afternoon game on Thanksgiving, and a presumably marquee game will be televised on NBC in prime time that night.

  1. Lions and Bills huh? Hopefully this is the second game of the day so my food coma will have kicked in and I can sleep through it!

  2. Ralph’s from Detroit, Schwartz returns
All hail the almighty Buffalo-Detroit media markets

But seriously, glad to see the Bills get a national game aside from our usual vs Browns/Jags/cellardweller TNF game

  3. Between former Lions HC Jim Schwartz being in Buffalo now, and Ralph Wilson being a Detroit native, this made too much sense not to happen.

  4. Countdown before someone complains that the Lions have another Thanksgiving game despite being the team that started the tradition…10….9…..8…..7…..

  5. I can’t imagine the league office would be that happy over the Bills’ website leaking info like this ahead of announcing even who will be playing in the Thursday night opener in Seattle. How did the Bills get the okay to do this?

  6. At least it should be more competitive than Detroit’s 40-10 beat down of the Packers last thanksgiving…

  7. William Clay Ford and Ralph Wilson live in the same neighborhood. Both passed recently. Schwartz DC at Buffalo. Have some storylines for the game the NFL can use.

  8. Bills will be a much improved team this year and this may end up being a very important game with playoff implications. Don’t listen to the nonsense from the idiots who like to bash teams because they are bored, anonymous and insecure. Their life sucks so they want to bring everyone down. Go Bills!

  9. I hope you fools do go to sleep and miss a great game by two young up an coming teams. Bunch of morons, “oh Buffalo and Detroit, this sucks.” People who speak like that know absolutely nothing about football.

  10. For the people complaining about the Lions n Bills playin that day, weren’t u the same people complaining that you miss football season? so now u get a small preview of it and still complain. be happy that its almost back….well, sort of.

  11. They’ll be a ton of complaints in this post but all of those people will be watching on thanksgiving. What else are you going to do? Talk to your family? I don’t think so.

  12. No surprise to those who follow such things. Lions-Dolphins has a lot fewer storylines than Lions-Bills

  13. Irony: the last home game for Schwartz as HC featured him cussing out fans for booing him, LOL!!

  14. Are you kidding? They’ve played the Bears and Packers a combined 36 of the 74 times they’ve played. The last time was a while ago….2013.

  15. Knowing the Lions they will probably thank him again for all of the contributions he made to help us so much from that 0-16 place that he rescued us from, and offer him a welcome back home gift which will surely be a suitcase of several million more dollars.

Why? Because we have too much money to keep track of and have no idea what to do with it I suppose. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are about to drown to death in a pool of money then you would freely pass some of it out to anybody that walks by too, and especially if they mention that they are good at this football stuff. One day they should put their money into qualified football investments instead of donating it to people that can’t back up their talk with results.

  16. I guess CBS is resting on their laurels based on the Thanksgiving game last year between the Cowboys and the Raiders…as this site PFT reported, that was the highest or 2nd highest rated regular season game last year. Ratings wise. Surprised to see them follow that success up with this head scratcher of a game?????

  17. This is the first of 2 games between Detroit and Buffalo this season, the second will be at the Superbowl.

  18. The main reason there is a night game is that everyone else wanted in. But it’s clear that given the years of futility in Detroit, the league wasn’t unhappy to offer fans another game to make up for the inevitable mediocrity of the Lions game. Everyone still watches because everyone always watches, but it’s hard to imagine anyone cared much.

  19. Night game… Panthers at Ravens. Ravens have hosted the night game 2 times in the last 3 years.

Rumor is they are trying to make it Baltimore the 3rd annual host.

And what match-up this year is bigger than Steve Smith Sr.’s first game against his former team?

  20. The Dolphins always win when they play on Thanksgiving. Too bad we can use the “W”. Since ALL NFL games are fun to watch (this might be pre-pre season talking) I bet the Lions embarrass the Bills and Megatron sets a receiving record against the tiny secondary of the Toronto/ LA Bills.

  21. Finally a game not against one of the top 3-4 teams in the league on Turkey Day!

Last year was a 40-10 waxing of the Pack by the Leos….I smell an actual friggin winning streak!! wooooooo

  22. Couldn’t care less who plays. I’m a football fan. Watching football is what I do. Those who whine about NFL matchups really ought to sick with bowling.

  23. Awesome. No need to watch a snooze fest like this. With Caldwell at the helm, the lions will be mathematically eliminated weeks before this game. As usual, there won’t be any reason the watch the Cowboys game. They’ll inevitably end the season 8-8 and remain a threat to nobody. More time for food and family on this holiday. Wahoo!

  24. I know my Redskins stunk past season but 2 years ago on Thanksgiving RG3 and the SKINS beat the Cowboys in Dallas…so maybe a Redskins vs Eagles prime time match up….HTTR

  25. looks like the Lions players are going to enjoy two turkeys on Thanksgiving day… one being imported from Buffalo.

  26. Buffalo has a surprisingly solid team, obviously not as stacked with stars as Detroit, but they have a good defense and also pick high in the draft. Should be an exciting game between two playoff teams.

  27. It sickens me to read some of these comments saying this game could have playoff implications for the Bills…I’m a Bills fan and if you think we are so much as sniffing the playoffs next year, you are delusional. I hope I’m wrong but with EJ Manuel as your starting QB, how exactly do you see us making a playoff run?

  28. The Hawks will probably get a game here. We’re the new America’s Team…what better day to prove it than by dominating some poor team on Turkey Day. Seahawks games ratings are going to go through the roof as the dynasty carries on.

  29. So happy to force the Bills down other peoples throats on primetime because they are the only team in the NFL that even matters.
    Go Bills.

  30. The game will have two of the best D lines in the league next year. Also, this would be a good game to honor Ralph Wilson on a nationally televised game. Ralph was originally a minority owner of the Lions way back before buying the Bills.

  31. Just glad my Rams aren’t playing on Turkey Day. People bitch about the Bills. Trust he, the backup to Bradford (Sean Hill) handing off to Bennie Cunningham doesn’t really get the competitive juices flowing either. That would have been worse

If you check out the Bills depth chart, all their DBs are less than 6 ft – look for Megatron to set a FF record.
No, not true. Stephon Gilmore is listed at 6-1, Corey Graham is at 6-0. Yes, Leodis McKelvin is 5-10 and Nickell Robey is 5-8. Yes, Safety Da’Norris Searcy is 5-11 and Safety Duke Williams is also 5-11. The thing is: Height doesn’t make the Cornerback or Safety, It’s a combination of their Vertical leap, arm length and closing speed together.
Any Cornerback would struggle against Calvin Johnson one on one, but the Bills would double cover him with a Safety over the top. The Lions other receivers can be covered one on one. Buffalo will keep an extra Defensive back on the field throughout the game. It is what most teams do when facing CJ.
