49ers haven’t decided to pick up the fifth-year option on Aldon Smith

AP

By all accounts and appearances, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith decided at the wrong time in the worst place to be a wiseacre.

And now the 49ers have to decide what to do.  It’s extremely unlikely they’d cut him, because he’d be gobbled up on waivers — possibly by another team in the division.  Because Smith arrived via the first round of the 2011 draft, the 49ers have to decide by May 3 whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Smith’s rookie contract.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the 49ers haven’t decided to exercise the option.  They’ll be discussing the question in the coming days and weeks, and they have less than three weeks to resolve the issue.  The analysis will entail further homework regarding Smith’s off-field issues, especially since the obvious question that arises from Smith’s decision (allegedly) to joke about a bomb with a TSA agent is whether Smith was under the influence of alcohol, or something else.

Smith spent an extended stretch in rehab last year, after being arrested behind the wheel of his car while allegedly intoxicated on a Friday, hours before practice and two days before a game.  And then there are pending felony gun charges, for which Smith will soon be back in court.

If the 49ers don’t use the option, it could wake Smith up.  But then the 49ers would have only one franchise tag to use in 2015, and possibly two guys who merit it:  Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

Either way, it’s been a challenging week for the 49ers. And it will get no easier as they try to figure out what to do with a player who has racked up 42 sacks in 43 regular-season games.

  1. Aldon Smith needs jail time. Illegal guns, crashing while drinking and driving, stabbings and now getting caught up in some terrorist prank is ridiculous. No character, defend that 49er fans.

  2. If Blackmon gets an indefinite suspension for smoking J’s, then this jerk needs the same. DUI, Guns charges & now threatening w/ a bomb.

The 9’ers asked for this by babying him and paying him through his last suspension. Smith thinks he’s free to do whatever he wants.

At some point the league needs to mandate penalties rather than deferring to teams. It’s obvious that if the player is a high pick and good, then he’s treated different than that of a walk on or low pick.

  3. Well,
I’m a Seahawks fan. I wouldn’t want him on my team. He just doesn’t get it. Completely crazy. Which is probably what makes his a good football player. Unfortunately, he may never be on the field to show it. No class. To 49er fans no jail comments to you, if no ped comments to hawk fans. Nice clean rivalry. With the Vikings fans wishing they were us taking shots from the outside. (Pft poet) lol

  4. The historic Minnesota Vikings would never sign a player like this.

We base our roster off players who are great in the NFL but also are first class citizens – unlike Aldon.

While your teams players are off doing drugs and making airport threats.

Our players are volunteering and preparing the hoist a Lombardi this season.

We are the class of the league and all of sports.

  5. I always envy these guys born 6’5, 260lbs with freaskish athletic ability because I wish I could have been given that gift.

Then they normally do things like this and I quickly remember that I am perfectly content being a little smaller and slower and not being born a complete idiot.

  6. San Francisco won’t get any value for him if they try a trade……..wait a minute…..”Mr. Irsay SF is on line one”……….5 minutes later…..OMG…the Earth is SHAKING!!!!! Shock and AWE is coming VERY SOON!!!!!!! SF you got a first round pick.

  7. It’s about money. Pay the guy because someone else will your troublemaker gives other teams primed ready and willing to sign a trouble maker if it makes them better. No team can monitor these ME GENERATION players.

  8. Kick him out of the NFL he is a four time loser. Start with this roach and maybe other guys might think twice before they do something stupid .

  9. @pftpoet
Wanna make any bets that your vikes wont win the sb even with godly players like ap and cordelle?

  10. In all honesty, all you guys would love him on your team.

Every team has a Lou Zerr or two. Hate too say it… It’s our society we love the drama, unless when its our team. Lets see; Ndamukong Suh, Ray Lewis, oh Mr. Patriot guy, does Hernandez ring a bell? Lets see Ben Rothelsburg likes the ladies in the bathroom.

Any Cowboy fans jumping on this bandwagon? Mom beaters are awesome receivers…

  11. Top 5 NFL bad guys who lack class, break laws, and have character issues:

    1. Richard Sherman
    2. Aldon Smith
    3. Colin C.
    4. Richard Sherman
    5. Ray Rice

  12. I’m a Niner fan and I believe he needs to be suspended for a year to get help (again). He is at a point to where even if the Niners don’t pay him someone will – and big dollars. He doesn’t need to be rewarded. Also, if Kap doesn’t check out and he has sexually assaulted someone he needs a year off and some jail/therapy. Seriously, it sucks to loose, and loose we would – but character and class have to mean something. I don’t want to think of our squad like the bengals with pack-man or the Seahawks, or the raiders of old.

  13. I always love to banter with all NFL fans, trash on their players and teams as they do mine, but good lord, thepftpoet, and thevikesarebest do NOT speak for the great fans of the Minnesota Vikings. Buffoons they are. Buffoons. Skol Vikes.

  14. Gonna be a long season for the 49ers. They lost all their corners, bowman is gone for half the season and now smith is probably gonna be suspended for some games.

  15. In other TMZ news Steve Gutenberg goes on tyraid at Oklahoma International after a fan asked him when a new Police Academy movie is coming out.

  16. How can you not love the thepftpoet? I find myself scrolling comments for him and logicalvoicessay! I dont know whether to hate their jackassery or love it. Poet denies the loveboat and 4 SB losses while logical denies that redskins are really the worst franchise ever! However, they are over the top loyal! keep posting and I’ll keep reading! you guys definitely make me chuckle!

  17. fAlldown Smith will be getting an entirely different five year “deal”. It’s part of an all inclusive package, meals, activities and laundry service etc….

  18. Coaching mini scandal, starting players leaving as FAs, critical starters injured, old Gre, QB scandal and then there is Smith. Is any team imploding like the 49ers this year?

The West will be fought out by Seattle and AZ this year, both will likely make the playoffs, and one of them has a great shot at the Super Bowl.

“I don’t want to think of our squad like the bengals with pack-man or the Seahawks, or the raiders of old.”

Uhhh, time to face reality… Your team is every bit as messed up as any team ever, if not more so.

  20. of course they’re picking it up, they are already the 2nd best team in the division. By the way they are real close to being 3rd.

  21. Hey pft poet… Didn’t you guys have a entire boat filled with sexcapades and sign a certain qb from the packers that later got busted for sending pictures of his junk to Jen sturgeon lol. Glass houses

  22. Maybe he needs to employ minders 24 hours a day to keep him out of trouble. I seem to recall that Dez Bryant has that sort of arrangement and it seems to have worked.

  23. At some point one of these idiots needs to be banned from the NFL. The team is in a position where to release him for cause would enable a competitor to snap him up to play against them. Nobody will give any value in a trade.
Goodall could impose a fine and or suspension, but that wouldn’t necessarily solve the problem.
Until the hammer starts falling hard, players will have no real incentive to clean up their acts and conduct themselves like incredibly well paid professionals.

  24. He is still facing a court date over the gun charges and he continues to act like this. If San Fran keeps him long term I can’t wait to hear them express disappointment and concern every time Smith gets into trouble.

  25. Dear Mr. Davis,
We don’t take kindly to people makin a ruckus in our new stadium. So how about we have your team play here instead of them people.

    Regards,
    Santa Clara

  26. On a separate note, it’s amusing hearing Niner fans long for the old days of classy behavior.
They’ve apparently forgotten the incident where Jerry Rice was found hiding in a closet in a massage parlor during a raid.
Admittedly that’s kinda tame these days, but still funny.

  27. U think 49ers will cut him yea right hes to talented
But they should suspend him without pay of course

  28. who cares if someone else picks him up. he’s got DUI’s,weapons charges and now bomb threats on his resume. that’s three strikes. do your franchise a solid and cut him.

  29. And now we’ll hear from Niner head coach Jim Harbaugh. Take it away, Jim:

“You always want to be above reproach, especially when you’re good.”

    — 7 AM drunk driving.

    — Felony gun charge at a house party.

    — Bomb threats at LAX.

    — Hit and run w/ threats against witness with brass knuckles.

    — Who knows what in Miami.

  30. Jim is upset that he has to turn the “days without an incident” counter in the locker room back to zero only days after having to reset it because of kap.

On another note, I wonder how j Mart will get along with aldon smith over Richie incognito. Much more character guys in this locker room compared to the dolphins.

  31. We love pointing out bad behaviors from teams, but at the end of the day it’s called reality. You put as many talented people from all sort of upbringings together, and we get surprised that this stuff happens. In reality.. I get sick of Pete the cheat comments because USC bosses got off Scott free, and there is no way to hold college boosters accountable.
Shouldn’t we be giving the Pete Carroll and I hate saying it Jim harboughs of the world credit for giving these kids credit?
Life is about risks these two programs are being rewarded for taking it on people. News flash. That’s what causes buy in. That’s why they win. I don’t think smith will ever learn his lesson which is sad. Time to go.

  32. people who are calling the 49ers classless for something they haven’t decided on is completely retarded! last year aldon got suspended for marijuana possession and DUI. the niners extended his suspension issued by the nil and if not that they made him ride the bench shortly after. the 49ers takes this seriously. Dan skuta started over him basically the whole season

  33. I am not sure this is just a substance issue. Aldon seems to have problems understanding the basics of being an ordinary citizen.
I find it hard to believe that Aldon will be a reliable player in the 2014 regular season and playoffs.

  34. Smart NFL teams let the players that they are not going to sign leave via through free Agency….then if the player is a probowl player like Aldon Smith..they will get compensation thru a picks in the next draft ( for Smith they will get a high 3rd) So letting a player go by releasing him AKA ..DJax… CJ2K ect..they get nothing..

  35. As a big time 49er fan, this guy needs to go. He has messed up far to many times and he’s now becoming a distraction. He is a very good football player, however, he is no longer worth this behavior.

  36. And another good player shoots himself in the foot. I wonder if the rest of the team can stay out of the news for the remainder of the year. My guess is Probably not. Its only April 15. Lots of time left!

  37. What is this, a Niner Hater Blog? Like ALL OF US, Aldon Smith made a mistake. He’s now made 3 mistakes and they are serious. BUT, what would you have them do with him, lock him up and throw away the key? How would any of us like to be talked about like Aldon here on this page? What if everything you ever did wrong was put out there? ANSWER, WE WOULDN’T LIKE IT! Smith is young, obviously immature like a lot of people his age and he needs to grow up and a lot of guidance. That said, he’s also one ridiculously good football player and the Niners would be fools to let him get away. Remember Charles Haley Niner fans??? I remember how crazy Charles Haley would get; peeing on cars, allegedly masturbating in film rooms, etc. Well, I also remember him coming back to Candlestick with the Cowboys and wreaking havoc all over Steve Young and the Niners. He cost the Niners at least 2 Super Bowls with his unrelenting pass rushing and I’m sure he had a huge chip on his shoulder when he played against SF. NOW, imagine Aldon Smith getting picked up by the Seahawks and doing the same. Harbaugh, Baalke and York, help this guy grow up and turn a negative into a success story. I wouldn’t be surprised at all, if THIS offseason of trouble and turmoil (Harbaugh leaving to Cleveland, Culliver hitting a bicyclist, Kapernick’s thing in Miami and now Smith’s airport snafu), ends up being the year they win it all. GO NINERS!!!
