Report: Josh Freeman, Matt Flynn working out for Giants on Tuesday

The quarterback position unexpectedly became a focal point for the Giants over the last week.

Eli Manning had ankle surgery, a report surfaced about some concerns about Manning for the long term and others had the Giants interested in free agents Matt Flynn and Josh Freeman as additions to the depth chart. It looks like the Giants will be getting a first-hand look at both players on Tuesday.

Kim Jones of NFL Network reports that both Flynn and Freeman will be working out for the team as they try to find another arm to go with Ryan Nassib and Curtis Painter while Manning is recovering from surgery this offseason. Nassib is almost certain to be on the roster after being drafted last year, which would likely lead to either Freeman or Flynn battling Painter to convince the Giants to keep them as a third member of the depth chart.

Flynn knows Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo from Green Bay, which could be of interest to the Giants as they install McAdoo’s offensive concepts this offseason.

  1. Josh Freeman couldn’t even surpass both Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel.

    Just saying…

  2. Wow, great pool to choose from.Be better off going after Kirk Cousins. They are willing to trade him for right price. Cousin starter and Mass in as back up.

  3. The Giants can’t beat the Redskins on the field and their efforts to stop the Redskins off the field have failed too. Now they are looking at anyone who ever took a snap to replace Eli the Interception Machine. Thank God I’m a Redskins fan. HTTR.

  4. Wait, the Pack havent signed Flynn, they want to go with the established duo of Tolzien, and Senecca.. wonderful lol…

  5. Why the Pack won’t sign Flynn is beyond me for whatever reason he is good in their system. But avg in just about every other system.

Why more teams aren’t interested in Freeman is also beyond me. He has had 2 really good seasons and 2 subpar seasons. Why not see if you can get him to be more consistent see he clearly can be great.
Brees and Eli were both up and down before settling in, so heck give him a shot see what happens.

  6. I don’t know why the Vikings don’t sign Flynn. He’d immediately become the best QB on their roster, and that includes the future bust they’ll draft in Round 1 this year.

  7. Flynn and the Packers are obviously MFEO. Flynn is a terrible quarterback with every other team he’s played for, but he appears competent when playing for the Packers. Similarly, every backup quarterback for the Packers has been terrible except Flynn. Of course, this concept is too difficult for the brilliant Ted Thompson to understand.

  8. Tolzein is better than Flynn and he’s signed. Flynn had the advantage of experience since Tolzein was signed mid year and had no work in the Packers system, yet he still threw the ball better than Flynn.

Flynn isn’t made for the Packers and i think the Packers don’t really want him unless they have to have him.

I expect GB to draft a QB later in the draft and go with that kid, Tolzein and the best player in football.

  9. Considering NYG has 5 preseason games, Flynn sounds like a decent option for reps since he knows MCAdoo

  10. Freeman was in Tampa – Schiano was fired. Freeman was in Minnisota – Fraizer is fired.
Freeman is hired in NY – Coughlin is fired?

I doubt that happens, but don’t be surprised if Freeman starts for the Giants that bad things will happen – and it will not help Coughlin who is definately a much better coach than the other two who were fired.

  11. I think that the reason the Packers don’t sign Flynn now is that Ted Thompson wants to drive Matt’s value down, knowing that the only team that wants him is the Packers, then TT will sign Flynn to a minimal contract.

  12. I am sure Jeff George, Jake Plummer & Duante Culpepper are available. Might as well try out McNabb while you are at it.

  13. I will never understand how a team is working out a QB like Josh Freeman, and yet won’t even look at Tim Tebow. Makes no sense whatsoever. Reports are that Tim has made great strides with his accuracy and mechanics in the past 8 months. Why won’t any teams at least have a look?
