Sammy Watkins visits the Rams

AP

The Rams are taking a close look at former Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins, a potential selection with the second overall pick.

Watkins is visiting the Rams today and will also work out for them on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher has said he likes the receivers the Rams have, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t like his receiving corps even better if he could add Watkins. Not only is Watkins considered the best prospect in this year’s draft, but he’s considered the best receiver prospect to enter the NFL in the last few years, at least since 2011, when A.J. Green went fourth overall and Julio Jones went sixth overall.

There’s also been talk that the Rams could trade down from No. 2 overall, and that the Lions may love Watkins enough to move up to get him. If the Rams stay put, their pick would likely be Watkins, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney or Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson.

  1. With having CJ and Tate on the roster I still think it’s more likely the Lions would be trading up for Clowney or maybe Mack and Sammy could be a fallback option that way they could trade up to say #3 before the draft if they want and know they can get one of those 3 players. Or they could chance it at 4 and just hope that one of the first 3 picks is either a QB or an OT and they still get one of their Top 3 overall players.

  2. Here is my top 5 WR list if the Lions trade up for this guy.

    #1- Calvin Johnson
    #2- Sammy Watkins
    #3- Golden Tate
    #4- AJ Green
    #5- Josh Gordon

  3. You can have Calvin Johnson, Jerry Rice, and Sammy Watkins on your team and it will not matter as long as Brian Schottenheimer is your offensive coordinator.

  4. Golden Tate is a proven commodity and is also a Super Bowl Champion. That signing puts the Lions over the top.

  5. The Rams are playing poker, if Clowney is gone, Watkins is the best card they have left and the Rams are betting the Lions go all in on Watkins and pay a ransom, Clowney might be there at #2, if that happens, I bet there’s 4 trades in the top 10 picks.

  6. Rams are nuts if they pass up Watkins at #2. They scored 1 TD in 8 quarters of football against the Seahawks last year. They need play makers, not tackles or DE’s.

  7. With the recent injury by a draft hopeful during a team workout, I’d would be very cautious about working out for several different teams prior to the draft. He’s going to be a top five pick based on his prolific college career and his strong combine and pro-day workouts. One serious injury (as we have already seen this offseason) and he goes from being a top five to possibly a 3rd round pick at best.

  8. the rams would trade the pick if the price is right. wondering what the lions would have to give up to get the #2 pick. is watkins worth it? that is up to the lions to decide.

  9. If the Rams sit tight at #2, Watkins is clearly the way they should go. He is the cleanest prospect in the entire draft, and would fill a position of big need for STL. They can possibly still get one of the big 3 OTs at 13.

  10. The Rams are just throwing parts in a box. I can’t tell if they are a power or finesse team. Hopefully Bradford can hold up long enough to throw a pass to whoever is running routes.

    1. Most teams didn’t score against the Hawks
    2. The Rams are a run-first team so another WR won’t make a difference in Scotty’s offense
3.Kellen Clemens was the qb in both games against Seattle

Over the top of…….? There’s no such thing as being over the top at the bottom…..oh wait….you mean over the top of CLEVELAND!! Ohhhhh, I get it. Yeah, you’re ABSOTIVELY, POSILUTELY right!!

  13. Kansas City fan huh? It’s been a long time since you were at the top. Enjoy your Andy Reid led run of AFC conference title game losses in your future. That is after the Broncos finish their run of dominance over your division.

  14. More than a WR the Rams need quality upgrade on their offensive line. Robinson,Mathews and Lewan are top tier linemen and they will all be gone by pick 13

  15. Rams struck gold with all the draft picks from the RGIII deal, so I can see the temptation to trade back again and let some team go all in for that #2 pick. At some point though, you have to put your chips on the table and draft the guys you think are going to make your team special. Seattle won it all because they drafted the best. Rams won’t go anywhere just stockpiling picks. They need superstars too.

  16. I hope the Rams dont take him because I want him on the Raiders.

    but

    WHY THE WORKOUT!?

What do they still need to see about him? He did everything between the combine and his pro day. His film is spectacular. This is getting beyond ridiculous, its litteraly abusive to these prospects, especialy the ones who dont have much more to prove. To me he’s risking injury without any protection. They are making them travel like crazy, taking them out of the physical preparation routine and the eating routine goes to the garbage. This is a big toll on the prospects and the teams dont risk anything.

Im with Florio on this, someone needs to say enough. Sammy just say no man.

  17. As I said in an earlier post. there is no way he should work out for an NFL team when he has absolutely nothing left to prove. If a team bypasses him in the draft due to declining a workout invite, then the next team will definitely draft him.

  18. As a Browns fan I want to see Watkins fall to 4, but really this is the guy the Rams need to take if they stay at 2. I am also surprised everyone assumes the Rams won’t go QB. Lets be honest, I would say Bradford is pretty good, but he hasn’t set the world on fire.

  19. They may already have Austin but they are still waiting for the guy they drafted (Bradford) to become their franchise QB.

  20. Man I can’t figure my team out. Is it a smokescreen or not? They seem committed to Bradford so why not give him the best WR prospect out there? Oh wait. Maybe they really do want some big uglies like Matthews, Robinson or Lewan because they want to be a power running team. But Zac Stacy did pretty well with the O-line from last year, maybe 2nd round is ok for OL. Then there’s always Clowney if the Texans don’t take him! The more I read the less certain I am of what they’ll do. All I do know is that Snead and Fisher rarely stay put with their pick. Watch them wheel and deal.
Oh well, just 24 more days to go!

  21. They are working him out because most of his game tape is about screen plays-that’s the way Clemson used him. To be a #2 pick, they want to be SURE that he can run the route tree. They are just doing their homework. As a Rams fan, i HOPE that they draft him, but more realistically see Robinson or Matthews as the pick. And, being a Rams fan, that’s all we can do: Hope 🙂 BTW-not a fan at all of this later draft day-sucks!!

  22. This is a do-or-die year for Bradford. So, taking Watkins at #2 makes the most sense. The Rams can get an OT at #13.

  23. The rams will take Clowney for their #2 pick, if he’s gone then they will go for Greg Robinson

  24. I honestly do not see how Sammy Watkins would hurt the Rams at all. This actually might be a great pick up considering that Kenny Britt could possibly get hurt again throughout this season not to mention he is only signed to a one year deal. Having Tavon and Sammy signed to multi-year deals is a huge plus. They could very well follow this pick with a OL or Defensive player with their second pick at 13. They could also trade the pick and move down one or two spots and pick up multiple picks and still get Sammy presuming the Lions or anyone else doesn’t trade up for him!
