Rams could be planning to draft a quarterback

AP

At the Scouting Combine in February, Rams G.M. Les Snead told NBCSN’s Pro Football Talk that there’s no way his team would take a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2014 draft.

That doesn’t mean the Rams aren’t thinking about beefing up the position later.

As explained by Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams are “strongly considering” drafting a quarterback next month.  They’ve been spending time eyeballing the likes of Pitt quarterback Tom Savage, South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray (pictured), SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert, Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr, and Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd.

While the Rams by all appearances remain committed to Sam Bradford, he’s recovering from a torn ACL and under contract for only two more years.  Likewise, backup Shaun Hill has signed a deal that covers only one year.

If they land a rookie who develop quickly and quietly, it’s possible that, come next year, the Rams may be rethinking their commitment to Bradford.

  1. Title should read: “Rams SHOULD be planning to draft a quarterback”

Bradford sucks and can’t stay healthy to boot. The fact that they aren’t considering one, even with their first pick, is mind boggling.

  2. This is bad news for QB needy teams (Vikings anyone?) who think that they can wait till the 2nd round before they draft their QB. It will force them to re-think that strategy and reach for one earlier. But reaching for a QB in the first round is what keeps those teams on the bottom (Vikings anyone?)

  3. Well make up your mind St. Louis, either he’s the future of the franchise or he’s not. If not, then what’s your exit strategy? If he is then why haven’t you been more outspoken with your support about that or worked out the extension? This GM is playing things close to the vest, probably due to a combination of strategy and having no clue what to do. Right now he’s just hoping for the right answer to fall into his lap or smack him in the face so he doesn’t have to make a decision.

  4. Why would the Rams draft a QB? They have Bradford, Shaun Hill, Austin Davis, and Brady Quinn on the roster. They xcan’t draft a QB and hide him on the practice squad. Someone would just take him.

Jeff Fisher has never carried 3 QBs on the game day roster. And I don’t see them signing Hill then cutting him.

  5. But…but…Bradford is our guy, right? I mean we drafted him #1 overall. lets just keep using the “he doesn’t have any weapons” excuse. Its worked out so far.

Give me a break. Time to move on, St. Louis.

  6. Mid-round QBs are usually career backups. Rams have the luxury of an extra first round pick to draft Manziel…the type of QB best served to succeed in THIS division against THESE defenses.

  7. Once one QB goes the race is on. Otherwise mid round teams will clean up, or even get good trade value. Lions are planning for everything.

  8. i would draft watkins at 2 unless a team is willing to trade something good for #2 pick and trade down my second 1st rounder. The rams are decent bc of their defense. Their offense is awful. They need to look for WR with their first pick and o-line with their second pick. Their second round pick needs to go to running back. I know WR is deep in this draft but they don’t need a quality WR they need a #1. I wouldn’t draft a qb this year if i was them. I would wait until next year and see how bradford is one last year. By waiting one more you that gives them a better chance to build a better team for the new qb.

  9. C’mon Florio, getting hard up for “news” with this later draft date? That the Rams are going to draft a developmental QB has been known for months on end. Look for one to be drafted in rounds 3-5, unless there is a shocker available in round 2. They will NOT draft a QB with their round 1 picks, but will later…again, this has been known for months.

to hutch119: Wont get into a discussion on Bradford, but drafting a QB with the #2 pick?? Which among these turkeys would YOU waste a #2 overall pick on? Johnny Football??? Really???

  10. It’s kinda quick to say Bradford sucks, but he hasn’t done much to prove that he was worthy of being a top overall pick, or a franchise QB.

It’s a “Prove your worth” season for Bradford

  11. I like Bradford, but Jeff Fisher is the man (and I’m a Giants fan). If they draft a QB, nobody should shed any tears for a guy that got 72 FREAKIN’ MILLION dollars. I wish the NY Giants would draft Aaron Murray, and give him the gig in 2016. Eli has ice water in his veins in the playoffs, but during the regular season, he is average — maybe — at best. I agree with Gruden. Murray will be the next Drew Brees.

  12. With the new wage system I’m not entirely sure it’s not most advantageous to grab the best QB you can, ride him for 4-5 years and then draft the next. Build a team that can compete regardless of QB and find a “Russell Wilson” type guy if you can.

That Seattle team wins regardless of who is starting at QB last season.

It pays to be paying your starting QB $1M/season vs. $20M+.

  13. The question should be what took them this long , if its true they are looking at that position, I have never seen someone SO OVERRATED at doing NOTHING like one Sam Bradford.

Even when healthy i have yet to watch a rams game where he did something special, like putting the team on his back and winning a memorial game like a Andrew luck , and Andrew luck just arrive on the scene, and how long has bradford been around??? My point exactly.

  14. Thanks to the JaMarcus rule … teams can draft QBs every year until they get their QB without paying a major price and handicapping the team.

  15. It’s about time this subject was brought up. I’ve never seen a QB do so little yet recieve so much security as Sam Bradford.

  16. Still Didn’t get ENUFF for a HEALTHY RG3! At the end of the Day the Rams will Suck AGAIN. And the Skins will end up the Playoffs this year. Until The Rams make the Playoffs or RG3 is out for good, The Skins will be the Victor of this trade(as long as they can keep their QB Healthy). What they gave up in draft, looks like they are getting them in FA. And I’m not a Skins Fan. Never have been. But the Rams have Sam B. And That’s the Joke!

  17. Frankly, every team should be planning to draft a QB if the right guy is available at the right price.

In 2013 11 starting QBs were not 1st round picks:

    Brees (2)
    Brady (6)
    Dalton (2)
    Foles (3)
    Kaepernick (2)
    Glennon (3)
    Pryor (S)
    Romo (UDFA)
    Schaub (3)
    G. Smith (2)
    Wilson (3)

Not bad. And there are plenty of developmental QBs that have turned into a harvest of draft picks like Schaub, Kolb, Flynn and Cassel to name a few. So all in all, its well worth doing your homework.

  18. I clicked on this link to see if people were buying into this. With this info coming out so soon, I will speculate that it is a smoke screen. NO team is telling anyone what they are actually going to do this early. They rarely do at any point for that matter. The only thing teams will try to do at this point is drum up trade interest. Leaks are designed.

  19. Sam Bradford hasn’t proven a damn thing in the league. All I’ve heard are excuses. It’s been 4 years. About time to invest in another young QB.

  20. What the Rams should do is have the GM trade Seattle 3 first round picks in the draft for the number one slot, then draft a linebacker. Oh wait that was the other waste of time I had relating to football this weekend

  21. Seattle doesn’t win with just any QB. Russell Wilson isn’t elite, but he’s pretty darn good and has a knack for making clutch plays. And Seattle won’t be getting away with paying him $1M/season for much longer. There’s no such thing as a team that can compete regardless of QB. A good QB means you can compete. A good *insert any other position in football* doesn’t necessarily mean that.

  22. You know it right away if you have an elite franchise QB. Bradford is a decent QB but will never be elite. His contract is prohibitive and he will hinder the Rams going forward. Everyone now wants a “Russell Wilson type guy” at QB. The Rams will go for Bortles and Lewan in round 1.

  23. What the rams should do if they r smart is trade down a few spots with that 2nd pick (maybe lions at ten) stay n the top ten n grab matthews or lewan beef up that oline and if they are dead set on gambling on bradford (lets be clear its a gamble at best) then they may consider double dipping on oline with the first 3 picks cuz the only way bradford gives em a chance is if that jersey stays clean. I dont see em spendin high pick on watkins or any wr they did that in prev drafts those guys should be ready to step up so logic dictates oline early rd 1….. Thank u thank no applause please…

  24. Maybe the problem is Bradford, but can anyone name a single QB who was a success who didn’t have a decent receiver to throw to?

    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

  25. If go Greg Robinson first for the rams then best wr with the second first. Then I would look at maybe even another oline or corner in the second.

Then hope Bradford can stay healthy

  26. Come on STL dont pull a Browns, put a little faith in your QB and try getting him some weapons to throw to in the draft, maybe some O-line help too

  27. Im thinking rams need olineman bc they can add all the wr and te they want but without time to get set in the pocket no QB can be successful. Jake Matthews should be pick 1

  28. Of course I got blasted on the Rams sites and blogs a couple of years ago, when I knew Sam was the problem. Honestly this team is loaded with talent…well enough that if they use these pucks wisely they can be a contender in 2 years max. Take Watkins first, later in the round with the other first take Johnny, then Rb in second.
They could go mack or clowney with the first, but honestly a legit Qb turns this team around That Pitt guy could be interesting, but in this division the qb needs to get outside the pocket and make a play. Really the entire Nfl needs to go that route. Watch manning and Brees film of those playoff games.

  29. if they could hit on a good one they could take over that division, rams will have a very good defense and a good o line to protect the qb and run the ball well. that is probably the weakest division in the nfl when it comes to qb’s.

  30. (Coming from a Rams fan) I really hope the Rams are thinking of drafting a Quarterback this year… Bradford is really starting to get on my nerves in STL. He isn’t who he was supposed to be when he was drafted. It wouldn’t hurt either to draft another quarterback, but if he was truly the franchise QB, he would have had his contract extended by now. It wouldn’t hurt to take a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round this year.

  31. Please – it’s a ploy. They are NOT drafting a QB. They’re hoping some team will get nervous and move up to their #2 spot and again get a ton of value.
Bet the farm they are NOT drafting a QB. They will draft WR.

  32. Wouldn’t surprise me.

    Always thought Bradford was overrated.

He’s injury prone, he can string together bad games, and his arm is a bit weak.

At one point, a couple of years ago, in a two year stretch comprising over 15 games John Skelton threw more td’s and less INT’s then Sam Bradford. That’s just sad.

Sam did start off well last year, given that they finally started giving him some receivers to throw to, but then he got injured….again.

This is a make or break season for him, because for whatever reason, if he can’t lead the team to win, if you can’t stay on the field for whatever reason, then you need to find a QB that can.

That might be the situation Bradford is in, and Rams might do well getting a QB with their second 1st round pick, or maybe in the 2nd.

  33. this guy TOM SAVAGE seems to make sense he has gotten used to being behind a terrible o line the film on him showed him getting pounded and chased yet making throws. Bradford has 2014 to get it together or the fans will be screaming although a better o-line and more weapons have and are arriving so lets hope we can get it done this year!!
