Now we know why the Giants signed Rusty Smith earlier today, to add to a sizeable stable of backup quarterbacks.
The team just announced that one of the other ones, Curtis Painter, had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, and would need four weeks to recover.
With Eli Manning still on his way back from ankle surgery, the Giants have Josh Freeman, Ryan Nassib and Smith healthy for OTAs which begin in late May.
Painter missing time could jeopardize his ability to win one of the coveted Eli’s backup jobs, since they can’t possibly keep all of them. The Giants are putting in a new offense, reducing whatever advantage Painter had by being an incumbent.
