Jets take Calvin Pryor with 18th pick

2014 NFL Combine

The Jets had a chance to add Johnny Manziel to Michael Vick and Geno Smith in a quarterback room for the ages, but they followed the trend and became the 17th team to pass on Manziel Thursday evening.

For the fourth straight year, the Jets opted for someone to help Rex Ryan’s defense with their top pick.

Louisville safety Calvin Pryor was the pick instead and it addresses a big need on the Jets defense. The Jets have lacked dynamic players in the back end throughout Ryan’s tenure, leading them to constantly look to free agency for veterans with limited ability to do what’s needed. Pryor is a big hitter who may need some work on his coverage skills, but Dawan Landry and Antonio Allen may not be imposing enough to keep him out of the lineup as a rookie.

With Pryor in the fold, the Jets have improved their secondary but their wide receiving corps still needs some attention. With 11 picks on Friday and Saturday, they have plenty of ammunition to use to get those offensive pieces.
