The Jaguars have pretty much resigned themselves to not having wide receiver Justin Blackmon in 2014 and his future beyond that isn’t particularly clear, which likely played a role in the team’s decision to draft wideouts Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson in the second round of the draft.

It also may lead them to hold onto one of their veteran receivers beyond next season. General Manager David Caldwell said that the team is talking to Cecil Shorts, who led the team with 66 catches and 777 receiving yards last season, about an extension.

“We’ve had some general discussions with his representation,” Caldwell said, via the Florida Times-Union. “Obviously, we want him here for the long haul. He’s a valuable part of our organization, and we’d love to, at some point in time, take care of Cecil.”

Caldwell said that he hopes the addition of Lee and Robinson to go with 2013 rookie Ace Sanders will give the team flexibility to move Shorts around the offense to make full use of his skills. Holding onto Shorts would also help the offense when they decide to turn to Blake Bortles at quarterback as they’re otherwise thin on experienced targets in the passing game.
