Cardinals G.M. says Tyrann Mathieu could play in opener

All indications have been that Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu had been doing well in rehab for his December knee injury.

And now Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim says that it’s going well enough that playing in the opener is a real possibility.

We think there’s a chance that he’ll be back by the beginning of the season,” Keim said during an interview with Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, via

The Cardinals open in prime time, with a Monday Night Football appearance against the Chargers, and that would be quite a stage for Mathieu to come back. He was having an excellent rookie season before tearing his ACL and LCL in his left knee in Week 14.
“He has been a gym rat,” Keim said. “He’s in here all the time. We have to kick him out of the building and tell him ‘Tyrann, go home for a little bit.’ He’s always in the training room doing his rehab.

“I told him, ‘Ty, don’t listen to anybody because nobody can tell you and pinpoint the exact return date. That’s up to you.’ And he’s a machine. He’s the kind of guy that I really think can come back a lot earlier than people anticipated.”

Since the Cards initially thought he’d start the year on the physically unable to perform list, the steady progress he’s made is a good sign, so long as he’s well in the fall.

  1. Great to see this kid working so hard and focusing on football. A great talent who became distracted at LSU, it sounds like he has re-found his discipline, somewhat by the help of PP I’m guessing! A good positive story I hope turns into a HoF career for the young man.

  2. Keep working hard on what’s in front of you Tyrann! This guy brings and adds a certain element to the Cards Defense, as a cardinal fan i have not seen a defensive back from the cardinals who wraps and tackle so well. he doesn’t miss tackles and specially doesn’t allow YAC. he’s a special player that’s turning his life around in arizona with the help of PP21 and Fitz im sure. proud he’s a Cardinal Player and im rooting for you to succeed not only as a Cardinal player but in your life!! make us proud Honey Badger 🙂

  3. Why, oh why do coaches have elite defensive backs return kicks? I don’t get it! If I ever coached a team there is NO WAY I’d risk any of my defensive starter on kick returns!

I hope Mathieu comes all the way back from his injury, and hope the Cardinal’s coaches never risk a talented defensive back in anything but the Super Bowl.

  4. When he’s healthy, CB’s Patrick Peterson/Antonio Cromartie plus safeties Honey badger plus 1st round pick Buchannon should be a thing to behold. The only weaknesses in that Cardinals already solid defense were at CB2 and SS, and Cromartie and Buchannon should do the trick.
